Western Australia Soil Acidity Research And Development Update 2000 : Time To Lime, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia
Bulletins 4000 -
We have come a long way over the past three or four years in terms of both, the level of understanding and recognition of Soil Acidity as a major land degradation issue for the wheatbelt of Western Australia, and, in our actions to treat the problem.
During 1999 there were three very significant changes relating to acid soils in Western Australia.
- Lime use in WA increased by over 200,000 tonnes from 1998 to 1999 to a record 653,000 tonnes, which was double the amount applied in 1997.
- The Agricultural Lime Industry adopted a voluntary Lime Industry Code of Practice in …

CyanoNews
CyanoNews was a newsletter that served the cyanobacteriological community from 1985 to 2003, with content provided by readers (sort of a blog before there were blogs). The newsletter reported new findings from the lab, summaries of recent meetings (often provided by graduate students and post-docs entering the field), positions sought or available, life transitions, a compendium of recent cyanobacteria-related articles, and other items of interest to those who study cyanobacteria.

The Stability Of An Npz Model Subject To Realistic Levels Of Vertical Mixing, Christopher A. Edwards, Thomas A. Powell, Harold P. Batchelder
The Stability Of An Npz Model Subject To Realistic Levels Of Vertical Mixing, Christopher A. Edwards, Thomas A. Powell, Harold P. Batchelder
Journal of Marine Research
The linear stability of a vertically-distributed, Nutrient-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton (NPZ) ocean ecosystem model is analyzed to understand how vertical mixing influences biological dynamics. In the absence of vertical diffusion, the model generally exhibits both stable fixed point and limit cycle behavior, depending on the depth and choice of parameters. Diffusion couples the dynamics of nearby levels and can induce stable profiles as well as oscillatory dynamical trajectories that become vertically phase-locked for large mixing levels. Calculations of the Lyapunov exponent reveal that vertical diffusion can drive this model into a chaotic state, though this occurs only for levels of diffusion …
Feeding Selectivity And Rapid Particle Processing By Deep-Sea Megafaunal Deposit Feeders: A 234th Tracer Approach, Robert J. Miller, Craig R. Smith, David J. Demaster, William L. Fornes
Feeding Selectivity And Rapid Particle Processing By Deep-Sea Megafaunal Deposit Feeders: A 234th Tracer Approach, Robert J. Miller, Craig R. Smith, David J. Demaster, William L. Fornes
Journal of Marine Research
Deposit-feeding megafauna occur in virtually all deep-sea environments, yet their feeding selectivity and particle processing rates are poorly known. Excess 234Th activity is commonly used asa geochemical tracer for recently settled (, 100-d old) particles in the quiescent deep sea, but it has rarely been applied to the study of deposit feeders. To explore the selectivity and rates of megafaunal deposit feeding, we compared excess 234Th activities in the gut contents of deposit feeders from Santa Catalina Basin (SCB) (~ 1200 m depth) and the Hawaiian slope (~ 1680 m) to the activity of surface sediments and, in SCB, to …

Physiological Effects Of Chronic Copper Exposure To Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) In Hard And Soft Water: Evaluation Of Chronic Indicators, Lisa N. Taylor, James C. Mcgeer, Chris M. Wood, D. Gordon Mcdonald
Biology Faculty Publications
Effects of chronic copper exposure on a suite of indicators were examined: acute toxicity, acclimation, growth, sprint performance, whole-body electrolytes, tissue residues, and gill copper binding characteristics. Juvenile rainbow trout were exposed for 30 d to waterborne copper in hard water (hardness = 120 μg/L as CaCO3, pH = 8.0, Cu = 20 and 60 μg/L) and soft water (hardness = 20 μg/L as CaCO3, pH = 7.2, Cu = 1 and 2 μg/L). Significant acclimation to the metal occurred only in fish exposed to 60 mg/L, as seen by an approx. twofold increase in 96-h …

A minitransposon mutant of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium SR-11, SR-11 Fad-, is unable to utilize gluconeogenic substrates as carbon sources and is avirulent and immunogenic when administered perorally to BALB/c mice (M. J. Utley et al., FEMS Microbiol. Lett., 163:129–134, 1998). Here, evidence is presented that the mutation in SR-11 Fad- that renders the strain avirulent is in the cra gene, which encodes the Cra protein, a regulator of central carbon metabolism.

Development Of A High Throughput, Molecular Diagnostic Assay For Predicting Telomerase Activity In Breast Cancer Cell Lines And Tissues, L. Elmore, A. Akalin, L. Gollahon, G. Clarke, M. Grimes, A. Ferreira-Gonzalez, C. Garrett, S. Holt
Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center Publications
Telomerase is a cellular enzyme that helps to provide genomic stability in tumor cells by maintaining the integrity of telomeres. Telomerase is an RNA-dependent DNA polymerase that contains a protein component (hTERT) and an associated RNA (hTR), which is used as a template for telomere repeat addition. Telomerase activity, while not detectable in most normal human somatic cells, is associated with approximately 85% of malignant human cancers overall, including over 90% of breast cancers.
We have optimized a novel, quantitative, high-throughput telomerase activity assay using fluorescently labelled primers and Real Time quantitation via the ABI Prism 7700 (a.k.a., the TaqMan). …

Levels Of Stress Between Cooperative Education Students On-Placement And Pending Placement, Judy L. Mainzinger-Rathbun
Levels Of Stress Between Cooperative Education Students On-Placement And Pending Placement, Judy L. Mainzinger-Rathbun
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this study was to see if there was an association between the levels of stress in students who were interviewed for a job and their placement status after the job interview. During the spring 2000 semester, 62 students were sent on interviews with public and private agencies/companies for potential placement in cooperative education positions within the agencies/companies. Out of this total population of 62 interviewed, twenty-three were placed in positions (hereafter referred to as “on-placement”) and thirty-nine were not placed (hereafter referred to as “pending-placement"). For this study, the total population of 62 students was divided into …

Surface coal mining activity has effects on watershed and lake morphology within the Appalachian Mountains that continue to be problematic. A watershed’s natural dynamic balance has been subject to the influence of various natural and anthropogenic parameters such as mining sediment transport, wind, wave effects and currents. Many techniques have been developed to improve image processing in geobiophysical modeling, which can assist scientists, government officials, and industry personal with decisions affecting environmental concerns. One of the more advanced techniques involves 3D visualization and geobiophysical modeling. This process was used in combining remotely sensed digital aerial imagery with Digital Elevation Models …
An Investigation Of The Importance Parents Ascribe To Quality Criteria Established By A National Early Childhood Accrediting Agency, William Clayton Burch
An Investigation Of The Importance Parents Ascribe To Quality Criteria Established By A National Early Childhood Accrediting Agency, William Clayton Burch
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The increased use of childcare in the United States has drawn attention to the choices parents make pertaining to childcare. Professionals in the field of early childhood education have begun to question the methods parents use for choosing childcare. Questions arise about the ability of parents to detect quality in early childhood education settings. Ninety-eight parents in an urban area of Southern West Virginia were included in a sample that explored parents’ agreement with quality criteria defined by professionals in the field of early childhood education. Participants completed a 28-item survey, which provided information on demographics and consistency between parents …
