Field Peas In Finishing Cattle Diets And The Effect Of Processing, C. P. Birkelo, B. J. Johnson, B. D. Rops
South Dakota Beef Report, 2000
Field peas are usually grown for human consumption. However, quality problems can make them available at times for feeding to livestock. Field peas contain a moderate amount of protein (20-29%) which is highly rumen degradable. They are high in starch (41- 54%) and low in fiber (<9%) suggesting fairly high energy content. The few cattle feeding studies conducted to date have focused on their use in dairy cows and growing calves. No feeding trials have apparently been conducted with finishing cattle fed high-energy diets. The objectives of this study were 1) to evaluate yellow field peas as a replacement for soybean meal and corn grain in a high energy finishing diet and 2) to determine whether or not rolling altered their feeding value.

Phosphorylation Of The Neurospora Clock Protein Frequency Determines Its Degradation Rate And Strongly Influences The Period Length Of The Circadian Clock, Yi Liu, Jennifer Loros, Jay C. Dunlap
Dartmouth Scholarship
Under free running conditions, FREQUENCY (FRQ) protein, a central component of the Neurospora circadian clock, is progressively phosphorylated, becoming highly phosphorylated before its degradation late in the circadian day. To understand the biological function of FRQ phosphorylation, kinase inhibitors were used to block FRQ phosphorylation in vivo and the effects on FRQ and the clock observed. 6-dimethylaminopurine (a general kinase inhibitor) is able to block FRQ phosphorylation in vivo, reducing the rate of phosphorylation and the degradation of FRQ and lengthening the period of the clock in a dose-dependent manner. To confirm the role of FRQ phosphorylation in this clock …

P-Selectin Or Intercellular Adhesion Molecule (Icam)-1 Deficiency Substantially Protects Against Atherosclerosis In Apolipoprotein E-Deficient Mice, Robert G. Collins, Rizwan Velji, Natalia V. Guevara, M. John Hicks, Lawrence Chan, Arthur L. Beaudet
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
The expression of leukocyte and endothelial cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) is essential for the emigration of leukocytes during an inflammatory response. The importance of the inflammatory response in the development of atherosclerosis is indicated by the increased expression of adhesion molecules, proinflammatory cytokines, and growth factors in lesions and lesion-prone areas and by protection in mice deficient in various aspects of the inflammatory response. We have quantitated the effect of deficiency for intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1, P-selectin, or E-selectin on atherosclerotic lesion formation at 20 wk of age in apolipoprotein (apo) E(- /-) (deficient) mice fed a normal chow diet. …
