The Cleveland Charrette On Sustainable Urban Environments: Elevating The Stature Of Urban Redevelopment, Thomas Bier, Ziona Austrian Jan 2000

The Cleveland Charrette On Sustainable Urban Environments: Elevating The Stature Of Urban Redevelopment, Thomas Bier, Ziona Austrian

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The main focus of this charrette -- the stature of urban redevelopment relative to suburban "greenfield" development -- was epitomized by two Cleveland-area newspaper items (see Appendix A). One item announced an $850,000 federal grant to a suburb located at the rural fringe of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The grant from the Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce was for construction of a road that would open 250 acres of virgin land for industrial development.

Causal Implications Of Viscous Damping In Compressible Fluid Flows, P. M. Jordan, Martin R. Meyer, Ashok Puri Jan 2000

Causal Implications Of Viscous Damping In Compressible Fluid Flows, P. M. Jordan, Martin R. Meyer, Ashok Puri

Physics Faculty Publications

Classically, a compressible, isothermal, viscous fluid is regarded as a mathematical continuum and its motion is governed by the linearized continuity, Navier-Stokes, and state equations. Unfortunately, solutions of this system are of a diffusive nature and hence do not satisfy causality. However, in the case of a half-space of fluid set to motion by a harmonically vibrating plate the classical equation of motion can, under suitable conditions, be approximated by the damped wave equation. Since this equation is hyperbolic, the resulting solutions satisfy causal requirements. In this work the Laplace transform and other analytical and numerical tools are used to …

Congregational Character: From Stories To Story, Tom Steffen

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

The wide influence of television, media, and computer technology has created a story-telling culture in the United States. Dr. Tom Steffen suggests that denominational leaders and church consultants must begin using a story telling model of analysis to be effective in this new millennium. His insightful ideas are fully discussed in “Congregational Character: From Stories to Story.”

The Marketplace Of Ideas In Cyberspace, Margaret Chon

Faculty Articles

In the Panel Discussion on The Marketplace Of Ideas In Cyberspace at the 1999-2000 Oliver Wendell Holmes Symposium And Lectureship At Mercer University, Professor Margaret Chon discusses censorship and hate speech on the internet. Professor Chon questions the exporting of our First Amendment jurisprudence in this particular area, since we are the only democratic country to speak of, that protects what we've been referring to as hate speech.

Molecular Interaction Between Nitric Oxide And Ryanodine Receptors Of Skeletal And Cardiac Sarcoplasmic Reticulum, Guy Salama, Elizaveta V. Menshikova, Jonathan J. Abramson Jan 2000

Molecular Interaction Between Nitric Oxide And Ryanodine Receptors Of Skeletal And Cardiac Sarcoplasmic Reticulum, Guy Salama, Elizaveta V. Menshikova, Jonathan J. Abramson

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In striated muscle, the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) is the major storage compartment of intracellular Ca2+ that controls cytosolic free Ca2+ (Cai) and developed force by sequestering and releasing Ca2+ during each contraction. Ca2+ release from the SR occurs through high-conductance Ca2+ release channels or ryanodine receptors (RyR), which are regulated by various signaling processes. Over the last 15 years, there has been a growing consensus that critical sulfhydryl sites on RyRs can be oxidized and reduced, respectively, to open and close the release channels. The pharmacological actions of various classes of sulfhydryl reagents have demonstrated the existence of hyperreactive thiols …

Factors That Limit Compliance With Low-Impact Recommendations, James A. Harding, William T. Borrie, David N. Cole Jan 2000

Factors That Limit Compliance With Low-Impact Recommendations, James A. Harding, William T. Borrie, David N. Cole

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

Despite widespread efforts to minimize resource impacts, a number of remote areas continue to suffer from poor backcountry practices. Research to evaluate the effectiveness of low-impact communication strategies as they relate to recall of messages (Cole and others 1997) measured whether or not recreationists were aware of appropriate behavior given certain scenarios; it did not measure actual compliance. Partially in response to the results of that study, it has been hypothesized that a lack of information is not necessarily the only limiting factor in complying with specific low-impact recommendations. We propose a four-stage model of factors that might help to …

Re-Examining The Role Of Patents In Appropriating The Value Of Dna Sequences, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 2000

Re-Examining The Role Of Patents In Appropriating The Value Of Dna Sequences, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Articles

As public and private sector initiatives race to complete the sequence of the human genome, patent issues have played a prominent role in speculations about the significance of this achievement. How much of the genome will be subject to the control of patent holders, and what will this mean for future research and the development of products for the improvement of human health? Is a patent system developed to establish rights in mechanical inventions of an earlier era up to the task of resolving competing claims to the genome on behalf of the many sequential innovators who elucidate its sequence …

Development Of The Random Amplified Polymorphic Dna (Rapd) Technique To Measure The Effects Of Genotoxinsin Aquatic Organisms, Franck Andre Atienzar Jan 2000

Development Of The Random Amplified Polymorphic Dna (Rapd) Technique To Measure The Effects Of Genotoxinsin Aquatic Organisms, Franck Andre Atienzar

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Studies were undertaken to evaluate the potential of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) to detect DNA effects (including DNA damage and mutations) in aquatic invertebrates, following their exposure to a variety of environmental contaminants under laboratory conditions. After rigorous optimisation of the RAPD method, the protocol, which used a high annealing temperature (50"C for 10-mer primers), was found to generate good-quality DNA profiles from groups of organisms belonging to the bacterial, plant and animal kingdoms. The RAPD method was initially used to detect benzo(a)pyrene [B(a)P] and copper-induced DNA effects in the water flea Daphnia magna and ultraviolet-mediated DNA effects in …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder : Developments In The Last Decade Concerning Causes And Treatments, Phyllis Damgaard

Graduate Research Papers

The last ten years have brought major advances in the fields of medicine and technology, advances that have illuminated many of the dark comers of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This article seeks to pull together those illuminating advances, condensing the voluminous information available into comprehensive, but readable, pages. The causes of the disorder are discussed from both the scientific and psychological/social perspectives. The controversy resulting from medicating so many, so young is an integral part of this country's interest in ADHD, due largely to coverage by the popular media.

Research concerning successful treatment strategies is also discussed. Medication, behavior …
