A Communitarian Critique Of The Child Protective System, Toni Terling-Watt Dec 2000

A Communitarian Critique Of The Child Protective System, Toni Terling-Watt

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Child Protective Services (CPS) has been defined as an ineffective system. Common criticisms are that the system is overburdened and that family preservation policy pressures CPS to reunite families that can't be repaired. However, empirical analyses that identify the deficiencies of this organization are limited. This study utilizes case files and in-depth interviews with interventionists within and outside of CPS to explore the issue. Results reveal that the most common criticisms of the system do have merit. However, it reveals additional system limitations. Results suggest that the child protective system is characterized by an individualistic approach and that this focus …

Effect Of Size Level And Fiber Coarseness On Ink-Jet Printability Of Size Press Coated Paper, Falguni Mehta Dec 2000

Effect Of Size Level And Fiber Coarseness On Ink-Jet Printability Of Size Press Coated Paper, Falguni Mehta

Masters Theses

In recent years, matte coated paper has enjoyed wide spread usage for ink-jet applications. The coating performance is strongly influenced by base sheet properties including fiber coarseness and base sheet absorbency. Base sheet absorbency, which is elevated in terms of internal sizing, is a crucial property of ink-jet paper.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of size level and fiber coarseness on ink-jet print qualities. A secondary objective was to examine the size reversion phenomena and to quantify the effect of size level, pigmented coating, and fiber coarseness on size reversion.

The results showed that the …

Deep Pockets And Determination: Review Of Gimme Some Truth: The John Lennon Fbi Files. By Jon Wiener., Stephen R. Mackinnon

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The narrative in Gimme Some Truth runs a slim and trim 104 pages. The story is familiar and well told: the FBI and CIA were put to political use in 1972 by President Richard Nixon (at the suggestion of Senator Strom Thurmond) to safeguard Nixon's reelection. Not startling news. The new twist is the case study involving the greatest pop culture celebrity icon of the 1960s and early 1970s-John Lennon of Beatles fame. For a while, engineering Lennon's deportation before the Republican National Convention seemed to be the Haldeman-Nixon-Hoover goal. The more interesting and original sub-theme is the way Wiener …

Gender And Intercollegiate Athletics: Data And Myths, Julia Lamber Dec 2000

Gender And Intercollegiate Athletics: Data And Myths, Julia Lamber

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article explores what nondiscrimination means in the context of intercollegiate athletics. After reviewing the Department of Education's controversial Title IX Policy Interpretation, it critically examines the analytical framework used in Title IX athletic cases and concludes that commonly made analogies to litigation under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act are inapt. A major part of the Article is an empirical study, looking first at gender equity plans written by institutions of higher education for the National Collegiate Athletic Association and then at data collected from more than 325 institutions pursuant to the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act. …

Identification And Characterization Of Zinc-Responsive Genes In Pseudomonas Fluorescens, Thomas L. Wilson Dec 2000

Identification And Characterization Of Zinc-Responsive Genes In Pseudomonas Fluorescens, Thomas L. Wilson

Masters Theses

Genes responsive to elevated concentrations of zinc were identified via transposon mutagenesis in the common soil bacterium, Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC13525. Some of these genes were essential to maintain metal homeostasis in the bacterial cell. DNA sequences of the transposon-tagged genes were determined by DNA sequencing of arbitrary PCR products. DNA sequence analysis indicated that one gene was similar to P-type ATPases responsible for transporting metal ions out of the cell. The corresponding mutant was sensitive to zinc, cadmium, and lead indicating that this gene may be responsible for defending Pseudomonas fluorescens against these metal ions. Four zinc-induced genes shared similarity …
