Vibration Field-To-Lab: Impact Of Time Measurement Intervals On Intensity, Frank Magnifico Jr, Jay Gerondale Jan 2000

Vibration Field-To-Lab: Impact Of Time Measurement Intervals On Intensity, Frank Magnifico Jr, Jay Gerondale

Theses

The objective of this study was to determine what impact various time measurement intervals would have on intensity levels in the trucking environment. The study was limited to timer triggered data collection associated with semi trailer vibration. The study then examined the relationship between established wake-up time intervals and the resultant intensities and PSD plots for the same field trip. In order to accomplish this, it was necessary to use multiple recorders. Each recorder was to be set with a specific time trigger threshold for recording data. Two vibration environments were analyzed using Saver vibration recording equipment. One environment was …

The Colors And Shadows Of My Word(S), Lydia A. Saravia Jan 2000

The Colors And Shadows Of My Word(S), Lydia A. Saravia

Open Access Master's Theses

If I find my voice, I will find my identity. Voice gives identity meaning. The acquisition of language (voice) means an acquisition of subjectivity (identity). A search for an identity is a search for voice. But formation of identity is difficult when multiple layers of subjectivity are to be considered: the layer of dual culture, in this case Guatemala and the United States, the layer of an urban environment, the layer of a working-class status, the layer of being female, which are all major players in the development of voice. To make sense of, and find a voice for, a …

Analysis Of A Traffic Diversion Strategy Using Corism Traffic Micro-Simulation Software, Daniel Ryan Abedon Jan 2000

Analysis Of A Traffic Diversion Strategy Using Corism Traffic Micro-Simulation Software, Daniel Ryan Abedon

Open Access Master's Theses

Throughout the United States metropolitan area freeways are operating at or near capacity. Any disturbance in the traffic flow on these freeways, planned or unplanned, can result in varying degrees of congestion. Incident management programs have been established in urban areas nationwide to help reduce the magnitude of incident induced congestion. These programs focus mainly on the incident identification and response stage, and have only recently begun to develop the tools and techniques needed to manage the recovery stage. One technique that has been becoming more widely employed, with the increased focus incident management and overall traffic systems management, is …

Direct Public Offerings On The Internet: A Viable Means Of Obtaining Capital?, Jack A. Rosenbloom Jan 2000

Direct Public Offerings On The Internet: A Viable Means Of Obtaining Capital?, Jack A. Rosenbloom

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

The high cost of capital has stymied many businesses in their attempts to survive and prosper. But the emergence of the Internet and the explosive growth of e-commerce have created new opportunities for some businesses to explore different sources of additional capital. Many small-to-medium-sized companies have not yet fully appreciated the potential of this rapidly growing global network.

In 1998, 33% of American households were online - a percentage that by 2003, should increase to 51%.] More important, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) estimated that, at the end of 1999, as many as ten million investors had bypassed brokers …

A Study Of Topographic Rossby Waves In The Mid-Atlantic Bight And Their Possible Coupling To Gulf Stream Meanders, Oleg G. Logoutov Jan 2000

A Study Of Topographic Rossby Waves In The Mid-Atlantic Bight And Their Possible Coupling To Gulf Stream Meanders, Oleg G. Logoutov

Open Access Master's Theses

Topographic Rossby Waves (TRWs) have been shown to be strikingly energetic and persistent in the Mid-Atlantic Bight, and a mounting observational evidence suggests that they might couple to the Gulf Stream (GS) in the region off Cape Hatteras, affecting GS meander development processes. This thesis presents a detailed study of TRW properties from a quasi-geostrophic (QG) framework with an aim to address the problem of TRW-Gulf Stream coupling.

First, a quasi-geostrophic theory is employed to find the dispersion properties of TRWs off Cape Hatteras, in the absence of a mean flow. A new tool is developed which allows to determine …

Free Speech On The Internet: Regulating Web Authorship By Students, Rhoda J. Yen Jan 2000

Free Speech On The Internet: Regulating Web Authorship By Students, Rhoda J. Yen

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

As Internet use increases, more websites authored by students will populate the World Wide Web (WWW). Indeed, about one-third of all personal websites now belong to students, who are mostly minors.' Students' increasing use of the web raises new questions about free speech. This article addresses one of them: May schools censor student-created websites? If so, under what circumstances may they delete pages, edit pages, or discipline students for website speech?

In answering this question, this article looks for guidance to the history of free speech in the classroom. And examining the problem from a free-speech perspective is appropriate. If …

Helping Dairy Producers Reduce The Scc, Clell Bagley Jan 2000

Helping Dairy Producers Reduce The Scc, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

Practicing veterinarians are in an excellent position to help dairy producers recognize and deal with the problem of elevated somatic cell counts (SCC). Yet they are seldom asked to assist. A high SCC is an indication of chronic, subclinical mastitis in the herd and is also an indication of significant economic losses.

Vse Luchshe Detiam: All The Best To The Children, Soviet Ideology In Children's Fairy Tale Cartoons, Matthew Boyd '00 Jan 2000

Vse Luchshe Detiam: All The Best To The Children, Soviet Ideology In Children's Fairy Tale Cartoons, Matthew Boyd '00

Honors Projects

I have chosen as a focus the analysis of fairy tale cartoons in the Soviet Union and have attempted to establish the specific ideological use of five films spanning 1947-1979. For the analysis of these cartoons as ideological tools I have established a theoretical apparatus. This apparatus is based upon a thorough definition of ideology as it applies to these films taken from Terry Eagleton's book Ideology. I have adopted Vladimir Propp's theoretical apparatus on the classification of fairytales from his book Morphology of the Folktale. To aid both in interpreting the history of the 1920s to 1970s Soviet Union …

Design Models For Multimedia Learning Environments Based On Interactive Drama, Thomas John Rogers Jan 2000

Design Models For Multimedia Learning Environments Based On Interactive Drama, Thomas John Rogers

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Interactive multimedia offers a degree of richness that lies outside the scope of conventional design methods for computer based learning. This research seeks to develop an interdisciplinary approach to design, that recognises the ways in which the combination and integration of different media forms can be exploited to stimulate experiential, intuitive, perceptual, and social/communicative aspects of learning. The goal of the project has been to develop a conceptual design model for the development of multimedia learning environments (MLEs), for humanistic learning applications, by using interactive drama. The models and methods developed though a practical design project have been founded upon …

The Freedom Of Information Act, 1997: Some Observations, Anita Crowdle Jan 2000

The Freedom Of Information Act, 1997: Some Observations, Anita Crowdle

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The Freedom of Information Act 1997 was considered to be a vital part of the daily running within the child care organisation that I was working in and came to my attention whilst working in the caring field in the academic year of 1997/98. As it was my first post within the field of social care, having graduated from college in Athlone just that year with a Diploma, I was fortunate to "grow up" with the Act. Meanwhile the organisation and its staff gained the knowledge and training to make the necessary preparations and changes for the Acts implementation. This …

Alternative Liability In Litigation Malpractice Actions: Eradicating The Last Resort Of Scoundrels, Lawrence W. Kessler Jan 2000

Alternative Liability In Litigation Malpractice Actions: Eradicating The Last Resort Of Scoundrels, Lawrence W. Kessler

San Diego Law Review

The legal malpractice tort, however, has managed to withstand the winds of legal change. Particularly crucial has been the refusal to apply alternative causation doctrines. The refusal to apply causation doctrines that have been embraced in other areas has significant social effects. As a result, the consumers of legal services receive less protection from the courts than do the consumers of products or medical services.

Dropping Slugs In The Celestial Jukebox: Congressional Enabling Of Digital Music Piracy Short-Changes Copyright Holders Jan 2000

Dropping Slugs In The Celestial Jukebox: Congressional Enabling Of Digital Music Piracy Short-Changes Copyright Holders

San Diego Law Review

In response to the myriad new methods of copying that are emerging from the ongoing digital revolution, Congress has enacted several amendments to copyright law.' These statutes have sought to protect copyright holders in the digital age without chilling the development of new technologies or interfering with consumer access to copyrighted works. Specifically, the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 ("AHRA") recognized the tremendous potential for piracy created by consumer access to digital audio recording devices. The purpose of the AHRA is not only to prevent infringing acts, but also to compensate copyright holders for the inevitable instances of illicit …

Limaria Hians (Mollusca: Limacea): A Neglected Reef-Forming Keystone Species, J. M. Hall-Spencer, P. G. Moore Jan 2000

Limaria Hians (Mollusca: Limacea): A Neglected Reef-Forming Keystone Species, J. M. Hall-Spencer, P. G. Moore

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

1. The case is made for recognition of the marine bivalve Limaria hians as a reef-forming species, which plays a key architectural role in certain benthic communities around the United Kingdom and Ireland. 2. This species uses byssal threads to construct nests that can coalesce to form reefs that cover hectares of seabed, contain multiple conspecifies and bind sediment. In so doing, L. hians modifies physical, chemical and biological processes at the sediment-water interface. 3. Such nests support a high diversity of associated organisms in coarse-grade sediments (19 species of algae and 265 species of invertebrates from six discrete nests …

Developing Marketing Competence And Managing In Networks: A Strategic Approach, Aidan O'Driscoll, David Carson, Audrey Gilmore Jan 2000

Developing Marketing Competence And Managing In Networks: A Strategic Approach, Aidan O'Driscoll, David Carson, Audrey Gilmore

Articles

Two important domains of scholarly investigation over the last decade, competency development and networks, share important common ground. These domains are also comprehended gainfully in terms of their wider strategic underpinning. This paper first contends that competence is considered best in terms of the particular strategy–structure–shared values constellation of a firm. This enables competence, including marketing competence, to be understood in terms of competency deepening (within the conventional marketing function), broadening (marketing activity which must be shared and co-managed with other parts of the firm), and of partnering (essentially, the ability to manage alliances, networks and relationships between the firm …

Resin Infusion Under Flexible Tooling, James Antony Craen Jan 2000

Resin Infusion Under Flexible Tooling, James Antony Craen

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Resin infusion under flexible tooling (RIFT) can be considered to be a variant of resin transfer moulding (RTM) in which one stiff mould face is replaced by a flexible film. It is seen as an alternative to conventional hand lay-up techniques as it offers many benefits, particularly with regards to health and safety whilst not involving the high tooling costs of a change to RTM. It is a vacuum driven process and as such fibre compaction may occur during vacuum bag preparation, prior to resin infusion and during resin infusion. The aim of the work was to examine the effect …

Beach Development Behind Detached Breakwater., Philip George Axe Jan 2000

Beach Development Behind Detached Breakwater., Philip George Axe

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Concurrent wave and morphology data were collected around a coastal protection scheme on the U. K. south coast. The scheme consists of eight detached breakwaters protecting a renourished sand and shingle beach, and is situated in a strongly macro-tidal environment. The development of the beach morphology is described. The beach trapped sand and shingle moving eastwards into it, and lost material from the eastern end. While the beach was designed to maintain a shingle beach, it was found that the scheme was most effective at trapping sand, which led to tombolo formation behind the updrift breakwaters. Current engineering design methods …

National Irish Bank: Coping With A Crisis And Beyond, Gerard Mortimer Jan 2000

National Irish Bank: Coping With A Crisis And Beyond, Gerard Mortimer

Case studies

As March 1998 drew to a close, management at National Irish Bank (NIB) would have been forgiven for believing that the bank’s situation could not get any worse. The bank had just issued a robust defence of its position in relation to an off shore bond scheme which had been the subject of much media and political debate for the previous two months. In particular, it had severely criticised RTE, the state owned television and radio corporation, and the two RTE journalists who had broken and dominated the story.

Losing Ground : Locational Formulations In Argumentation Over New Travellers, Rebecca Barnes Jan 2000

Losing Ground : Locational Formulations In Argumentation Over New Travellers, Rebecca Barnes

School of Psychology Theses

This thesis is an exercise in discursive psychology. The body of discourse analysed concerns the defence of rural space against New Travellers. In contrast to previous sociological and human geographical work in this area, instead of newspaper articles and Parliamentary discourse, participants' talk and texts are the starting point for the - investigation. The data corpora have been generated from a variety of sources: Focus group discussions with police officers; interviews with landowners (or their representatives); letters to the editors of local newspapers; and private letters of complaint to a local council. The thesis focuses on the participants' selection of …
