Reading Through Galileo's Telescope: Margaret Cavendish And The Experience Of Reading, Elizabeth Spiller Jan 2000

Reading Through Galileo's Telescope: Margaret Cavendish And The Experience Of Reading, Elizabeth Spiller

Department of English: Faculty Publications

This essay reassesses the role of reading in the context of seventeenth-century natural philosophy by analyzing Galileo Galilei’s Starry Messenger and Margaret Cavendish's The Blazing World. The unreliability of telescopic vision becomes a dominant metaphor for the unreliability of reading printed texts. Where Galileo sought to put the reader in his own position as a scientific observer by making reading a form of observation, Cavendish used the telescopic image to show how readers become the makers of their own fictions. From the recognition that reading and observation finally reveal our relationship to the world rather than the world itself comes …

Disec: A Distributed Framework For Scalable Secure Many-To-Many Communication, Lakshminath R. Dondeti, Sarit Mukherjee, Ashok Samal Jan 2000

Disec: A Distributed Framework For Scalable Secure Many-To-Many Communication, Lakshminath R. Dondeti, Sarit Mukherjee, Ashok Samal

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Secure one-to-many multicasting has been a popular research area in the recent past. Secure many-to-many multicasting is becoming popular with applications such as private conferencing and distributed interactive simulation. Most of the existing secure multicasting protocols use a centralized group manager to enforce access control and for key distribution. In the presence of multiple senders it is desirable to delegate group management responsibility to all the senders. We propose a distributed group key management scheme to support secure many-to-many communication. We divide key distribution overhead evenly among the senders. Our protocol is scalable and places equal trust in all the …

Sharpness Rules, Garrett Johnson, Mark Fairchild Jan 2000

Sharpness Rules, Garrett Johnson, Mark Fairchild

Presentations and other scholarship

A large-scale psychophysical experiment was performed examining the effects of various simultaneous variations of image parameters on perceived image sharpness. The goal of this experiment was to unlock some of the rules of image sharpness perception. A paired comparison paradigm was used to compare images of different resolution, contrast, noise, and sharpening. In total, 50 people performed over 140,000 observations. The results indicate that there are several very interesting tradeoffs between the various parameters of contrast, noise, resolution, and spatial sharpening. An interval scale of image sharpness was created. This scale was then used to test the results of several …

Error Diffusion Using Linear Pixel Shuffling, Peter G. Anderson Jan 2000

Error Diffusion Using Linear Pixel Shuffling, Peter G. Anderson

Presentations and other scholarship

Linear pixel shuffling error diffusion is a digital halftoning algorithm that combines the linear pixel shuffling (LPS) order of visiting pixels in an image with diffusion of quantization errors in all directions. LPS uses a simple linear rule to produce a pixel ordering giving a smooth, uniform probing of the image. This paper elucidates that algorithm. Like the Floyd-Steinberg algorithm, LPS error diffusion enhances edges and retains high-frequency image information. LPS error diffusion avoids some of the artifacts (“worm-s,” “tears,” and “checkerboarding”) often associated with the Floyd-Steinberg algorithm. LPS error diffusion requires the entire image be available in memory; the …

Genes Classical And Genes Developmental: The Different Uses Of The Gene In Evolutionary Synthesis, Scott F. Gilbert Jan 2000

Genes Classical And Genes Developmental: The Different Uses Of The Gene In Evolutionary Synthesis, Scott F. Gilbert

Biology Faculty Works

Dobzhansky (1964) stated that “Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution,” and the function of the gene is no exception. The use of genes in population genetics and developmental genetics differs significantly. This is reflected in the roles that genes are postulated to play in evolution. In the Modern Synthesis of population genetics and evolution, genes become manifest by differences in alleles that are active in conferring differential reproductive success in adult individuals. The gene is thought to act as a particulate, atomic unit. In current syntheses of evolution and developmental genetics, important genes are manifest …

Classically Unstable Approximations For Linear Evolution Equations And Applications., Yu Zhuang Jan 2000

Classically Unstable Approximations For Linear Evolution Equations And Applications., Yu Zhuang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Temporal discretization methods for evolutionary differential equations that factorize the resolvent into a product of easily computable operators have great numerical appeal. For instance, the alternating direction implicit (ADI) method of Peaceman-Rachford for 2-D parabolic problems greatly reduces the simulation time when compared with the Crank-Nicolson scheme. However, just like many other factorized approximation methods that exhibit numerical stability, the ADI method is known to satisfy only the Von Neumann stability condition, a necessary condition that is usually surmised as sufficient in practical cases as pointed out by Lax and Richtmyer. Intensive efforts have been directed to understand the Von …

Evaporation Reduction Potential In An Undisturbed Soil Irrigated With Surface Drip And Sand Tube Irrigation, Masoud Meshkat, Richard C. Warner, Stephen R. Workman Jan 2000

Evaporation Reduction Potential In An Undisturbed Soil Irrigated With Surface Drip And Sand Tube Irrigation, Masoud Meshkat, Richard C. Warner, Stephen R. Workman

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The efficiency of drip irrigation is highly dependent on evaporation losses occurring from the constantly saturated soil beneath emitters. Advent of subsurface drip irrigation is in part an approach to curb this inefficiency. An irrigation method, Sand Tube Irrigation (STI), is proposed to increase the efficiency of “Normal” surface applied drip Irrigation (NI method) on permanent tree crops without the need for burying the irrigation tubing. The sand tube consists of removing a soil core beneath the emitter and filling the void with coarse sand. A weighing lysimeter was constructed in the laboratory and instrumented to directly measure temporal evaporation …

Extended Topics In The Integration Of Data Envelopment Analysis And The Analytic Hierarchy Process In Decision Making., Tae-Sung Kim Jan 2000

Extended Topics In The Integration Of Data Envelopment Analysis And The Analytic Hierarchy Process In Decision Making., Tae-Sung Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a procedure, which can only consider relative priorities as estimated by decision-makers. A Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model is a data-oriented approach for evaluating the relative efficiency of a group of entities referred to as Decision Making Units (DMUs). This research work integrates and combines positive aspects of AHP's estimated qualitative data and DEA's quantitative data. This combination is accomplished by specifying two variants of the DEA methodology for selection of the best DMU. Initially the priority weights of AHP are integrated with the DEA methodology to provide results that are logic based. Next, …

Book Review: An Illustrated Guide To Iowa Prairie Plants, Paul Weihe

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

An Illustrated Guide to Iowa Prairie Plants. Paul Christiansen and Mark Müller. 1999. University of Iowa Press, Iowa City, Iowa. IX + 237 pages. ISBN 0-87745-660-7 hdbd., ISBN 0-87745- 661-5 pbk.

Iowans are increasingly aware of the significance of the tallgrass prairie, and efforts to preserve and protect this once-widespread ecosystem are ongoing. An obvious focus of these efforts 1s to conserve the native flora. When Bison and Elk disappeared from the landscape and row-crop agriculture appeared, a few of the native plants remained in old cemeteries, along roadsides, and in a few prairie remnants. Workers are now attempting to …

Corn (Zea Mays L.) Yield Response To Nitrogen Fertilizer In Conventional And Alternative Rotations, M. M. Harbur, M. Ghaffarzadeh, R. M. Cruse Jan 2000

Corn (Zea Mays L.) Yield Response To Nitrogen Fertilizer In Conventional And Alternative Rotations, M. M. Harbur, M. Ghaffarzadeh, R. M. Cruse

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Nitrogen (N) fertilization recommendations are not available for corn in rotation with small grains or forages despite the possibility that the N response may differ from that of more conventional corn-soybean rotations. Rotations of corn with soybean (CS), corn with soybean and oat (CSO) and corn with soybean and an oat/berseem clover intercrop (CSOB) were established in 1991 and studied from 1993 through 1998 to determine the optimal N fertilization level for corn produced in each rotation. Corn in each rotation received NH4N03 applied at the rates of 0, 56, 112, or 168 kg N ha-1. Significant differences …
