A Simple Vaccination Model With Multiple Endemic States, Christopher Kribs, Jorge X. Velasco-Hernandez Jan 2000

A Simple Vaccination Model With Multiple Endemic States, Christopher Kribs, Jorge X. Velasco-Hernandez

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

A simple two-dimensional SIS model with vaccination exhibits a backward bifurcation for some parameter values. A two-population version of the model leads to the consideration of vaccination policies in paired border towns. The results of our mathematical analysis indicate that a vaccination campaign φ meant to reduce a disease's reproduction number R(φ) below one may fail to control the disease. If the aim is to prevent an epidemic outbreak, a large initial number of infective persons can cause a high endemicity level to arise rather suddenly even if the vaccine-reduced reproduction number is below threshold. If the aim is to …

Anthropological Evolutionary Ecology: A Critique, Suzanne Joseph Jan 2000

Anthropological Evolutionary Ecology: A Critique, Suzanne Joseph

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

The goal of this paper is to critically evaluate Anthropological Evolutionary Ecology (AEE) as a paradigm by utilizing the method for theory framework developed by Pickett et al. (1994). While AEE can contribute in some ways to our understanding of human behavior through methods and techniques derived from neo-Darwinian theory (as well as current approaches in animal behavior and decision theory), AEE as a paradigm remains theoretically ill-equipped for the study of human ecology. This critique will focus on Anthropological Evolutionary Ecology, however, references will be made to Biological Evolutionary Ecology (BEE) since AEE relies heavily on theoretical components derived …

Using Geographic Information Systems And The World Wide Web For Interactive Transit-Trip Itinerary Planning, Brian L. Smith Jan 2000

Using Geographic Information Systems And The World Wide Web For Interactive Transit-Trip Itinerary Planning, Brian L. Smith

Journal of Public Transportation

Providing high-quality service information is important in attracting and retaining public transportation passengers. Currently, information provided to support transit-trip itinerary planning is either difficult to use or to access. Furthermore, after obtaining the information, passengers are required to perform a fairly complex search process to extract an itinerary. Two technologies that are becoming commonly used in public transportation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and the World Wide Web (WWW), offer capabilities to provide an easily accessible, highly functional tool for trip itinerary planning. This research effort investigated the feasibility of integrating these emerging technologies to produce a transit-trip itinerary planning tool.

Factor Analysis For The Study Of Determinants Of Public Transit Ridership, Sharfuddin I. Syed, Ata M. Khan Jan 2000

Factor Analysis For The Study Of Determinants Of Public Transit Ridership, Sharfuddin I. Syed, Ata M. Khan

Journal of Public Transportation

Behavioral studies based on attitude survey questionnaires with numerous variables may be tainted with repetitions and correlations. To overcome these deficiencies, a factor analysis approach is demonstrated that produces clusters of uncorrelated factors. From 47 observable variables contained in the Ottawa-Carleton Transportation Commission (OC Transpo) attitude survey, only 8 underlying/actors have emerged. Bus information service is the most important factor. In addition to factor analysis, this article reports on a logistic regression model, based on key factors, for estimating the odds of ridership.

A Systems Model For Evaluating Transit Performance, Joanne M. Sulek, Mary R. Lind Jan 2000

A Systems Model For Evaluating Transit Performance, Joanne M. Sulek, Mary R. Lind

Journal of Public Transportation

The purpose of this study was to illustrate how a systems modeling approach to transit performance measurement can be used to integrate the issues of service quality, efficiency, and effectiveness. The mathematical formulation of the systems model developed in this article was used to construct a single transit performance metric that can be used by elected officials, transit system personnel, taxpayers, and other decision-makers to compare similar transit systems. In this study, the systems model was applied to a set of small transit systems operating in the United States. Results revealed that fewer than one-fourth of these systems were efficiently …

Redistribution Under The Current Social Security System, Kathryn L. Moore Jan 2000

Redistribution Under The Current Social Security System, Kathryn L. Moore

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Arguably the most successful program of the modern welfare state, Social Security has been enormously successful in lifting the elderly out of poverty. Thirty years ago, almost 30% of the elderly were in poverty, a poverty rate that was more than twice as high as the rate for the population as a whole. Today, in contrast, only about 12% of the elderly are subject to poverty, a rate that is about the same as the rest of the adult population.

This Article describes how the current system redistributes income. The Article does not attempt to develop a mathematical model to …

Micro- And Macrodiversity In Rbcl Sequences In Ambient Phytoplankton Populations From The Southeastern Gulf Of Mexico, John H. Paul, Albin Alfreider, Boris Wawrik

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Ribulose-1,5-diphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) large subunit genes (rbcL) were obtained by amplification and cloning of 554 or 614 bp sequences of indigenous phytoplankton populations at 2 stations in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. One station (Stn 4) was located in a low salinity, high chlorophyll plume (the ŒGreen River¹) which has previously been shown to contain elevated levels of Form IA rbcL mRNA while the other (Stn 7) was in oligotrophic, oceanic water. A diversity of rbcL sequences was obtained, spanning 3 of the 4 evolutionary clades of Form I RuBisCOs. Six nucleotide sequences obtained from Stn 4 were …

Anomalous Moisture Diffusion In Viscoelastic Polymers: Modeling And Testing, S. Roy, W. X. Xu, Seung Jong Park, K. M. Liechti Jan 2000

Anomalous Moisture Diffusion In Viscoelastic Polymers: Modeling And Testing, S. Roy, W. X. Xu, Seung Jong Park, K. M. Liechti

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is now well known that Fick's Law is frequently inadequate for describing moisture diffusion in polymers or polymer composites. Non-Fickian or anomalous diffusion typically occurs when the rates of diffusion and viscoelastic relaxation in a polymer are comparable, and the ambient temperature is below the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the polymer. As a result, it is necessary to take into account the time-dependent response of a polymer, analogous to viscoelastic relaxation of mechanical properties, in constructing such a model. In this paper, a simple yet robust methodology is proposed that would allow characterization of non-Fickian diffusion coefficients from …

Relativistic Windowed Fourier Transform, M.R. Karim, S.T. Ali, M. Bodruzzaman Jan 2000

Relativistic Windowed Fourier Transform, M.R. Karim, S.T. Ali, M. Bodruzzaman

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Drawing upon some earlier work on coherent states of the Poincare' group in 1-space and 1-time dimensions, we use these states to define a relativistic windowed Fourier transform, as relativistic extension of the usual windowed Fourier transform. We discretize the resulting transform and obtain conditions under which the discretized transform can be used to reconstruct arbitrary square integrable functions. We present some numerical and graphical exercises to illustrate the theory, as well as to compare the relativistic windowed Fourier transform with the orthodox windowed Fourier transform.

Temperature Control For Chemical Reactor Using Adaptive Neural Network Control Strategy, Ahmad Khairi Abdul Wahab, Mohd Azlan Hussain, Mohd Zaki Sulaiman Jan 2000

Temperature Control For Chemical Reactor Using Adaptive Neural Network Control Strategy, Ahmad Khairi Abdul Wahab, Mohd Azlan Hussain, Mohd Zaki Sulaiman

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

A pilot scaled chemical reactor is constructed and commissioned to study various conventional and advanced control strategies. One of the approaches is the use of neural network inverse model based controller to control the temperature of the chemical reactor. Neural network control was chosen due to its capabilities to overcome the hassle in periodically tuning the conventional controller to obtain a good process response for a certain set point. Tests in a form of load disturbance and set point tracking are carried out to evaluate the neural network controller. The neural network controller exhibits satisfactory performance. Simulation work prior to …

Selection Of Curricular Topics Using Extensions Of Quality Function Deployment, Paul Kauffmann, Abel Fernandez, Charles Keating, Derya Jacobs, Resit Unal

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Decision science can be an effective tool for enhancing organizational participation during strategic and complex decision making. This involvement develops a group consensus for relating organizational goals and the methods to achieve them. This paper describes an application of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to define curricular topics that meet program objectives. Based on the ability of QFD to establish relationships, the model identifies the most important topics and quantifies their impact on meeting program goals. The model was developed to support restructuring of a Masters of Engineering Management degree program. The model supported decisions in selecting and prioritizing the required …

Efficient Techniques For Management And Delivery Of Video Data, Junghwan Oh Jan 2000

Efficient Techniques For Management And Delivery Of Video Data, Junghwan Oh

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The rapid advances in electronic imaging, storage, data compression telecommunications, and networking technology have resulted in a vast creation and use of digital videos in many important applications such as digital libraries, distance learning, public information systems, electronic commerce, movie on demand, etc. This brings about the need for management as well as delivery of video data. Organizing and managing video data, however, is much more complex than managing conventional text data due to their semantically rich and unstructured contents. Also, the enormous size of video files requires high communication bandwidth for data delivery. In this dissertation, I present the …

Opening The Door To Business Methods: State Street Bank & Trust Co. V. Signature Financial Group, Inc. (Note), Colin P. Marks

Faculty Articles

Business method patents require further litigation to answer many lingering questions. The decision of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in State Street Bank & Trust Co. v. Signature Financial Group, Inc. eliminated the "business method" exception. The business method exception used a skeptical approach asking "why should a patent be granted." The skepticism inherent in this approach may explain why the doctrine was recognized for so many years.

Since the time of Hotel Security Checking Co. v. Lorraine Co., advances in the field of science and the advent of computers have forced courts to constantly …

Sandal Types And Archaic Prehistory On The Colorado Plateau, Phil R. Geib Jan 2000

Sandal Types And Archaic Prehistory On The Colorado Plateau, Phil R. Geib

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Perishable artifacts provide an alternative to projectile pointsfor examining spatial patterns in Archaic material culture between northern and southern portions of the Colorado Plateau of the North American Southwest. This is so because they possess a potential great variety of specific construction and design attributes and can be directly dated to establish independent chronolo- gies of development. The analysis and dating of a collection of warp-faced plain weave sandals from Chevelon Canyon, Ari- zona demonstrates the potential utility of perishable artifacts to our understanding of prehistory. The collection provides an importantfirst sample of early Archaicfootwearfor the southern Colorado Plateau. AMS …
