The Rhetoric Of Science Education Reform, William W. Cobern Jan 2000

The Rhetoric Of Science Education Reform, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

Leon Lederman’s Project ARISE promotes a “physics first” reorganization of the secondary science curriculum. As a Nobel laureate in physics, his ideas have attracted considerable attention. Issues outside of physics, however, that Lederman does not appear ready to acknowledge will limit the impact Lederman hopes to achieve.

On The Baroclinic Instability Of Axisymmetric Rotating Gravity Currents With Bottom Slope, Paul F. Choboter, Gordone E. Swaters Jan 2000

On The Baroclinic Instability Of Axisymmetric Rotating Gravity Currents With Bottom Slope, Paul F. Choboter, Gordone E. Swaters

Mathematics

The baroclinic stability characteristics of axisymmetric gravity currents in a rotating system with a sloping bottom are determined. Laboratory studies have shown that a relatively dense fluid released under an ambient fluid in a rotating system will quickly respond to Coriolis effects and settle to a state of geostrophic balance. Here we employ a subinertial two-layer model derived from the shallow-water equations to study the stability characteristics of such a current after the stage at which geostrophy is attained. In the model, the dynamics of the lower layer are geostrophic to leading order, but not quasi-geostrophic, since the height deflections …

Random Vibration Studies Of An Sdof System With Shape Memory Restoring Force, L. Duval, Mohammad N. Noori, Z. Hou, H. Davoodi, S. Seelecke Jan 2000

Random Vibration Studies Of An Sdof System With Shape Memory Restoring Force, L. Duval, Mohammad N. Noori, Z. Hou, H. Davoodi, S. Seelecke

Office of the Dean (CENG) Scholarship

Intelligent and adaptive material systems and structures have become very important in engineering applications. The basic characteristic of these systems is the ability to adapt to the environmental conditions. A new class of materials with promising applications in structural and mechanical systems is shape memory alloy (SMA). The mechanical behavior of shape memory alloys in particular shows a strong dependence on temperature. This property provides opportunities for the utilization of SMAs in actuators or energy dissipation devices. However, the behavior of systems containing shape memory components under random excitation has not yet been addressed in the literature. Such a study …

Neural Networks And Structured Knowledge: Rule Extraction And Applications, Franz J. Kurfess Jan 2000

Neural Networks And Structured Knowledge: Rule Extraction And Applications, Franz J. Kurfess

Computer Science and Software Engineering

As the second part of a special issue on "Neural Networks and Structured Knowledge," the contributions collected here concentrate on the extraction of knowledge, particularly in the form of rules, from neural networks, and on applications relying on the representation and processing of structured knowledge by neural networks. The transformation of the low-level internal representation in a neural network into higher-level knowledge or information that can be interpreted more easily by humans and integrated with symbol-oriented mechanisms is the subject of the first group of papers. The second group of papers uses specific applications as starting point, and describes approaches …

Environmental Education In A "Reforming" Education World, Michele Archie, Bora Simmons Jan 2000

Environmental Education In A "Reforming" Education World, Michele Archie, Bora Simmons

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Environmental education is in an awkward position. Nationwide polls tell us that 96% of parents support teaching environmental education in the schools.1 When teachers are asked if environmental education is important, an overwhelming majority (97.9%) agrees. Yet few teachers consistently include environmental education in their curriculum. 2 In the 30 years since environmental education took wing, many teachers have found themselves caught between believing in the importance of environmental education and feeling pressed to find the time to "fit" it in.

Photoabsorption Spectra Of Argon Cation Clusters: Monte Carlo Simulations Using Many-Body Polarization, Jose A. Gascon, Randall W. Hall Jan 2000

Photoabsorption Spectra Of Argon Cation Clusters: Monte Carlo Simulations Using Many-Body Polarization, Jose A. Gascon, Randall W. Hall

Collected Faculty Scholarship

A simple, semiempirical model that includes many-body polarization is used to study the ground and excited stateproperties of Ar+N clusters (N=3–23) at 80 K. For purposes of comparison, a model that does not include many-body polarization is used to study clusters with N=3–27.Monte Carlo simulations are used to calculate the average properties of these clusters. The model is similar to one previously used to study argon cation clusters without many-body polarization. The photoabsorptionspectrum is in good agreement with experiment; in particular, the photoabsorptionspectra for cluster sizes 4–10 do not show the blueshift that is seen with models that do not …

Nietzsche And Eros Between The Devil And God’S Deep Blue Sea: The Problem Of The Artist As Actor–Jew–Woman, Babette Babich Jan 2000

Nietzsche And Eros Between The Devil And God’S Deep Blue Sea: The Problem Of The Artist As Actor–Jew–Woman, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

In just one aphorism in The Gay Science, Nietzsche arrays “The Problem of the Artist” in a complex, highly reticulated constellation. Addressing every member of the excluded grouping of disenfranchised “others,” Nietzsche turns to the destitution of a god of love keyed to the self- or inward-turning absorption of the human heart. His ultimate and irrecusably tragic project to restore the innocence of becoming requires the affirmation of the problem of suffering as the task of learning how to love. Nietzsche sees the eros of art as what can teach us how to make things beautiful, desirable, lovable in the …

Recognizing Perfect 2-Split Graphs, Chính T. Hoàng, Van Bang Le Jan 2000

Recognizing Perfect 2-Split Graphs, Chính T. Hoàng, Van Bang Le

Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications

A graph is a split graph if its vertices can be partitioned into a clique and a stable set. A graph is a k-split graph if its vertices can be partitioned into k sets, each of which induces a split graph. We show that the strong perfect graph conjecture is true for 2-split graphs and we design a polynomial algorithm to recognize a perfect 2-split graph.

Comparative Cost Analyses Of Conventional, Integrated Crop Management, And Organic Methods, Robin G. Brumfield, Arbindra Rimal, Steve Reiner

College of Agriculture

Production costs have been analyzed in several studies using such normative approaches as budgeting and mathematical programming, and positive approaches as estimation of production, cost, or profit functions. This study used budgeting methods to analyze the costs and benefits of adopting integrated crop management (ICM) or organic methods versus conventional agriculture for tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), sweet corn (Zea mays L. var. saccharada), and pumpkins (Cucurbita pepo L.). Data were collected using field studies conducted at the Rutgers University Snyder Research and Extension Farm, Pittstown, N.J. Time and motion study techniques were used to record machinery use and labor quantities. …

Anson O. Kittredge: Early Accounting Pioneer, George C. Reomeo, Larissa S. Kyj

Accounting Historians Journal

Leafing through early accounting journals from the last two decades of the 19th century, accounting historians and enthusiasts piece together the history of accountancy in the U.S., yet pay little attention to the editors of these journals who at times almost single-handedly willed their existence, clearing the road for modern accounting journals. Anson O. Kittredge, who was probably the most outstanding and influential editor of the 19th century, was also an author, teacher, CPA examiner, innovator, practitioner, and organizer.
