Were Islamic Records Precursors To Accounting Books Based On The Italian Method?, Omar Abdullah Zaid

Accounting Historians Journal

The precise origin of the accounting records and reports outlined by Pacioli in 1494 and used in the Italian Republics is presently unknown. Historical evidence preserved in Turkey and Egypt indicates that accounting records and reports developed in the early Islamic State were similar to those used in the Italian Republics as outlined by Pacioli in 1494. Furthermore, some of the records and reports used in different parts of the Islamic State are comparable to modern-day books and reports. The religious requirement of Zakat (religious levy) and the increasing responsibilities of the Islamic State were the force behind the development …

Reflections Of A Naturalist: Papers Honoring Professor Eugene D. Fleharty, Jerry R. Choate

Fort Hays Studies Series

Science and academia tend to be dominated by persons who are utterly brilliant, or who are proficient at self-promotion, or who are willing to sacrifice their personal lives and work twice as hard as their peers, or who exhibit some combination of these attributes. Occasionally, however, someone comes along who is just "ordinary" compared with academic overachievers but whose accomplishments far exceed reasonable expectations. Eugene D. Fleharty is such a person. Although he is extraordinarily bright, few would describe him as utterly brilliant. He has never been inclined to "toot his own horn" or otherwise promote himself. And, although he …

The Edge-Isoperimetric Problem For The Square Tessellation Of Plane, Sunmi Lee

Theses Digitization Project

The solution for the edge-isoperimetric problem (EIP) of the square tessellation of plane is investigated and solved. Summaries of the stabilization theory and previous research dealing with the EIP are stated. These techniques enable us to solve the EIP of the cubical tessellation.

Preparation Of An Electrophilic 3-Methylindole Derivative: Difficulties In Forming A Stable, Suitable Material For The Preparation Of Tryptophan, Jason Boggs, Mariah Mcmasters, Robert W. Curley Jr., Michael J. Panigot Jan 2000

Preparation Of An Electrophilic 3-Methylindole Derivative: Difficulties In Forming A Stable, Suitable Material For The Preparation Of Tryptophan, Jason Boggs, Mariah Mcmasters, Robert W. Curley Jr., Michael J. Panigot

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In an attempt to prepare stereoselectively beta-deuterated tryptophan, N-protected indole-3-methanol compounds were prepared with model studies being done on undeuterated material. Conversion of these compounds to electrophilic species proved exceptionally difficult and resulted in very low yields or recovered starting material only. A summary of the current results utilizing N-tosyl indole-3-methanol will be presented as well as efforts using N-Boc indole-3-methanol.

Spin-Exchange Term In The Solvent Equation Of State Near The Critical Point For Electron Transfer Reactions, Juana Vivó Acrivos Jan 2000

Spin-Exchange Term In The Solvent Equation Of State Near The Critical Point For Electron Transfer Reactions, Juana Vivó Acrivos

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

Phenomenological Equations of State (EOS) for fluids near their critical point have been obtained using literature compression factor data, Zc = Pc Vc/(n R Tc) = 0.40 to 0.10 in Table I (Pc, Vc/n, Tc are the pressure, volume per n mole, and the absolute temperature of the fluid at the critical point). The objective is to explain the deviations from the van der Waals value, Zc(vdW) = 3/8 (-70 % for molten Se and alkali metals up to 6 % for molten Pb, Hg, and In) by including in the commonly used phenomenological thermodynamic relations a term which explicitly …

The Stroop Color Word Test And Learning Disabilities, Nathan E. Arnett Jan 2000

The Stroop Color Word Test And Learning Disabilities, Nathan E. Arnett

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This Thesis study critically explored the feasibility of utilizing the Stroop Color Word test as a psychological instrument to aid in the determination of learning disabilities (LD) in children aged nine to sixteen years old. Children with a previous diagnosis of LD were sought out for the experimental group by participating graduate students and, when confirmed by personal administration of intelligence and achievement tests, were administered a battery of nine neuropsychological instruments. A comparison was made with a control group of children with the same age and geographical background on the four different Stroop variables: the Word, Color, Color-Word, and …

An Analysis Of The Theory Of Functions Of One Real Variable, Robert J. Reed Jan 2000

An Analysis Of The Theory Of Functions Of One Real Variable, Robert J. Reed

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Few undergraduates are aware that the Riemann integral taught in introductory calculus courses has only limited application-essentially this integral can be used only to integrate continuous functions over intervals. The necessity to integrate a broader class of functions over a wider range of sets that arises in many applications motivates the theory of abstract integration and functional analysis. The founder of this theory was the French mathematician Henri Lebesgue, who in 1902 defined the "Lebesgue measure" of subsets of the real line. The purpose of this project is to elucidate the theory of abstract measure spaces and of important spaces …
