The Microstratigraphy Of The Meadville Member Of Lodi, Northeastern Ohio: A Lithofacies Analysis, Andrew S. Madof
Honors Papers
During the Lower (Osagian) Mississippian Period, Ohio was about 7 degrees south of the equator in a tropical epicontinental sea at the northwestern edge of the Appalachian foreland Basin. Present day Lodi, northeastern Ohio, lay within the midst of a westward deepening syncline whose sediment was derived from the Acadian uplifts to the east. This sediment, composed primarily of illite and quartz, was deposited about 100 m below sea level in a middle to outer deltaic environment. From the base (Meadville Member) to the top (Armstrong Member) of the strata exposed at Lodi, a general increase in grain size occurs. …

In this paper, results are presented of an experimental and theoretical study of snapover, glow discharge, and arc phenomena for different materials immersed in argon or xenon plasmas. The effect of snapover is investigated for several metal-dielectric junctions: copper-teflon, copper-Kapton, copper-glass, aluminum-teflon, aluminum-Kapton, steel-teflon, anodized aluminum with pinholes, and copper-ceramics. I-V curves are measured, and snapover inception voltages, essential parameters (increase in current and collection area due to secondary electrons), and glow discharge inception thresholds are determined. Optical spectra are obtained for glow discharges in both argon and xenon plasmas. These spectra provide information regarding atomic species entrapped in the …
Optimal Distributed Binary Hypothesis Testing With Independent Identical Sensors, Q. Zhang, P. K. Varshney, R. D. Wesel
Optimal Distributed Binary Hypothesis Testing With Independent Identical Sensors, Q. Zhang, P. K. Varshney, R. D. Wesel
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
We consider the problem of distributed binary hypothesis testing with independent identical sensors. It is well known that for this problem the optimal sensor rules are a likelihood ratio threshold tests and the optimal fusion rule is a K-out-of-N rule [1]. Under the Bayesian criterion, we show that for a fixed K-out-of-N fusion rule, the probability of error is a quasiconvex function of the likelihood ratio threshold used in the sensor decision rule. Therefore, the probability of error has a single minimum and a unique optimal threshold achieves this minimum. We obtain a sufficient and necessary condition on the optimal …

A Distributed Spectral-Screening Pct Algorithm, Tiranee Achalakul, Stephen Taylor
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
This paper describes a novel distributed algorithm for use in remote-sensing, medical image analysis, and surveillance applications. The algorithm combines spectral-screening classification with the principal component transform (PCT), and human-centered mapping. It fuses a multi- or hyper-spectral image set into a single color composite image that maximizes the impact of spectral variation on the human visual system. The algorithm operates on distributed collections of shared-memory multiprocessors that are connected through high-performance networking. Scenes taken from a standard 210 frame remote-sensing data set, collected with the Hyper-spectral Digital Imagery Collection Experiment (HYDICE) airborne imaging spectrometer, are used to assess the algorithms …

On The Error Performance Of 8-Vsb Tcm Decoder For Atsc Terrestrial Broadcasting Of Digital Television, Dojun Rhee, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza
Faculty Publications
The error performance of various 8-VSB TCM decoders for reception of terrestrial digital television is analyzed. In previous work, 8-state TCM decoders were proposed and implemented for terrestrial broadcasting of digital television. In this paper, the performance of a 16-state TCM decoder is analyzed and simulated. It is shown that not only a 16-state TCM decoder outperforms one with 8-states, but it also has much smaller error coefficients.
Solid State Phase Transitions Characterized By Esr And Xas, Juana Vivó Acrivos
Solid State Phase Transitions Characterized By Esr And Xas, Juana Vivó Acrivos
Faculty Publications, Chemistry
Measurements of the relaxation time, of electron systems to a disturbance, by two different spectroscopic methods are examined in detail, with the purpose to establish how the presence of fluctuations near a solid state phase transition are made evident in insulators, conductors and superconductors. The absolute temperature and the relaxation time determine the thermodynamic stability of the electronic system near a phase transition by the Uncertainty Principle. At a given temperature T, Landau and Lifshitz obtain the stability from the lower limit of the uncertainty in entropy in units of the Boltzmann constant, S/kB << 1 when T >> 3.82 K ps. Magnetic resonance …<>

Solutions To The Chinese Postman Problem, Kenneth Peter Cramm
Theses Digitization Project
Considering the Chinese Postman Problem, in which a mailman must deliver mail to houses in a neighborhood. The mailman must cover each side of the street that has houses, at least once. The focus of this paper is our attempt to discover the optimal path, or the least number of times each street is walked. The integration of algorithms from graph theory and operations research form the method used to explain solutions to the Chinese Postman Problem.

Some Factors That Effect [Sic] Statistical Power In Ancova: A Population Study, Valerie Maria Tvedt
Some Factors That Effect [Sic] Statistical Power In Ancova: A Population Study, Valerie Maria Tvedt
Theses Digitization Project
A study into the factors that affect power in an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) design were examined. Four factors - sample size, significance level, dependent variable-covariate correlations and homogeneity of regression - were varied in a population study. Results indicate that power increased when the dependent variable-covariate correlations increased and when sample size increased. Power also increased when a less stringent alpha level was used. Homogeneity of regression did not effect power. Implications and recommendations for the applied researcher are discussed.

Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Interface Constraints In The Solution Of Hyperbolic Second-Order Differential Equations, Paul Jerome Silva
Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Interface Constraints In The Solution Of Hyperbolic Second-Order Differential Equations, Paul Jerome Silva
Theses Digitization Project
Solutions to differential equations describing the behavior of physical quantities (e.g., displacement, temperature, electric field strength) often only have finite range of validity over a subdomain. Interest beyond the subdomain often arises. As a result, the problem of making the solution compatible across the connecting subdomain interfaces must be dealt with. Four different compatibility methods are examined here for hyperbolic (time varying) second-order differential equations. These methods are used to match two different solutions, one in each subdomain along the connecting interface. The entire domain that is examined here is a unit square in the Cartesian plane. The four compatibility …
