On The Bosonic Spectrum Of Qcd (1+1) With Su(N) Currents, Uwe Trittmann Jan 2000

On The Bosonic Spectrum Of Qcd (1+1) With Su(N) Currents, Uwe Trittmann

Physics Faculty Scholarship

In this note we calculate the spectrum of two-dimensional QCD. We formulate the theory with SU(Nc) currents rather than with fermionic operators. We construct the Hamiltonian matrix in DLCQ formulation as a function of the harmonic resolution K and the numbers of flavors N f and colors N c.The resulting numerical eigenvalue spectrum is free from trivial multi-particle states which obscured previous results. The well-known ’t Hooft and large N f spectra are reproduced. In the case of adjoint fermions we present some new results.

A Primer For Applying Service Learning To Computer Science, Pete Sanderson, Kenneth Vollmar Jan 2000

A Primer For Applying Service Learning To Computer Science, Pete Sanderson, Kenneth Vollmar

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

Service learning is an educational philosophy that promotes active learning through community service. We have recently applied this approach in our computer science curriculum, specifically to our software engineering course. In order that other computer science departments can benefit from our experience, we have developed a primer one can follow to establish a program for service learning in the computer sciences. We also describe and assess our experience after one year of applying service learning to software engineering.

Ground-State Properties And Excited-State Reactivity Of 8-Quinolate Complexes Of Ruthenium(Ii), Dean Johnston Jan 2000

Ground-State Properties And Excited-State Reactivity Of 8-Quinolate Complexes Of Ruthenium(Ii), Dean Johnston

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

In an effort to explore new systems with highly reducing excited states, we prepared a series of Ru(II) complexes of the type Ru(L)(2)quo(+) (L = bpy (2,2'-bipyridine), phen (1,10-phenanthroline), dmphen (4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline), tmphen (3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline); quo(-) = 8-quinolate) and investigated their photophysical and redox properties. The absorption and emission spectra of the Ru(L)(2)quo(+) are significantly red-shifted relative to those of the parent complexes Ru(L)(3)(2+), with emission maxima in the 757-783 nm range in water. The Ru(L)(2)quo(+) systems are easily oxidized with E(1/2)(Ru(III/II)) values ranging from +0.62 to +0.70 V vs NHE, making the emissive Ru --> phen MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer) excited …

Paradox And Metaphor: An Integrity Of The Arts, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2000

Paradox And Metaphor: An Integrity Of The Arts, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

Art is movement, movement is life. Surprisingly, the spareness of paradox in art promotes a fullness of life. We must first speak as simply as possible about art as a fundamental human activity. Only then can we hope to say something of consequence about the so-called “fine arts” — which may be misleading as a description. In substance, the reference “fine art” simply means useless art: “fine” as being free from utility. Art is imaginatively productive, it makes something, whether painting, poem, or partita. But this making has no independent utility, and its character as a work of art …

Adaptive Harvest Management: 2000 Duck Hunting Season Jan 2000

Adaptive Harvest Management: 2000 Duck Hunting Season

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The process of setting waterfowl hunting regulations is conducted annually in the United States. This process involves a number of meetings where the status of waterfowl is reviewed by the agencies responsible for setting hunting regulations. In addition, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) publishes proposed regulations in the Federal Register to allow public comment. This document is part of a series of reports intended to support development of harvest regulations for the 2000 hunting season. Specifically, this report is intended to provide waterfowl managers and the public with information about the use of adaptive harvest management for setting …

Intelligent Mining In Image Databases, With Applications To Satellite Imaging And To Web Search, Stephen Gibson, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre, Brian Penn, Scott A. Starks Jan 2000

Intelligent Mining In Image Databases, With Applications To Satellite Imaging And To Web Search, Stephen Gibson, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre, Brian Penn, Scott A. Starks

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

An important part of our knowledge is in the form of images. For example, a large amount of geophysical and environmental data comes from satellite photos, a large amount of the information stored on the Web is in the form of images, etc. It is therefore desirable to use this image information in data mining. Unfortunately, most existing data mining techniques have been designed for mining numerical data and are thus not well suited for image databases. Hence, new methods are needed for image mining. In this paper, we show how data mining can be used to find common patterns …

Discrete (Granular) Logics: A New (Natural) Notion Of Continuity, With A Complete Description Of All Continuous Granular Logics, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2000

Discrete (Granular) Logics: A New (Natural) Notion Of Continuity, With A Complete Description Of All Continuous Granular Logics, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In most knowledge-based systems, the experts' uncertainty is described by a real number from the interval [0,1] (this number is called subjective probability, degree of certainty, etc.). However, experts usually use a small finite set of words to describe their degree of unecratinty; thus, to adequately describe the expert's optinion, it is desirable to use a finite (granular) logic. If all we know about the expert's opinion on two statements A and B is this expert's degrees of certainty d(A) and d(B) in these two statements, and the user asks a query "A and B?", then we need to estimate …

Complex Fuzzy Sets: Towards New Foundations, Hung T. Nguyen, Abraham Kandel, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2000

Complex Fuzzy Sets: Towards New Foundations, Hung T. Nguyen, Abraham Kandel, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Uncertainty of complex-valued physical quantities z=x+iy can be described by complex fuzzy sets. Such sets can be described by membership functions m(x,y) which map the universe of discourse (complex plane) into the interval [0,1]. The problem with this description is that it is difficult to directly translate into words from natural language. To make this translation easier, several authors have proposed to use, instead of a single membership function for describing the complex number, several membership functions which describe different real-valued characteristics of this numbers, such as its real part, its imaginary part, its absolute value, etc. The quality of …

Double Cysteine Mutations In Staphylococcal Nuclease: The Effect Of Artificially Introduced Disulfide Bonds On Protein Structure And Stability, Anna Terry Jan 2000

Double Cysteine Mutations In Staphylococcal Nuclease: The Effect Of Artificially Introduced Disulfide Bonds On Protein Structure And Stability, Anna Terry

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Since a protein's function depends on its structure, basic research in protein structure facilitates the solution of many practical problems, such as the synthesis of more effective medicines. With this larger goal in sight, the purpose of this research project is to understand better the chemical principles that underlie protein structure and stability. Disulfide bonds are a potentially stabilizing feature of many proteins. They may form between cysteine residues in close proximity to one another if the orientation is favorable. Often found in proteins produced by organisms that grow at high temperatures, disulfide bonds may anchor side chains together, making …

Efficient Multicast In Heterogeneous Networks Of Workstations, Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Jeff R.K. Hartline '01 Jan 2000

Efficient Multicast In Heterogeneous Networks Of Workstations, Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Jeff R.K. Hartline '01

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper studies the problem of efficient multicast in heterogeneous networks of workstations (HNOWs) using a parameterized communication model [3]. This model associates a sending overhead and a receiving overhead with each node as well as a network latency parameter. The problem of finding optimal multicasts in this model is known to be NP-complete in the strong sense. Nevertheless, we show that for two different properties that arise in typical HNOWs, provably near-optimal and optimal solutions, respectively, can be found in polynomial time. Specifically, we show the following two results: When the ratios of receiving overhead to sending overhead among …

Desert Solitaire: Using Literature To Develop A Sense Of Place And Stewardship Of Wilderness In High School Students, Cindy Lee Falsken Zacks Jan 2000

Desert Solitaire: Using Literature To Develop A Sense Of Place And Stewardship Of Wilderness In High School Students, Cindy Lee Falsken Zacks

Theses Digitization Project

The Desert Solitaire curriculum was designed as a basis for exploring Edward Abbey's book, of the same name, in a high school field ecology class. Students read the book over a period of six weeks during the middle of the school year. Lessons were designed to aid students in exploring their home ecosystem, the Mojave Desert, via comparison with Arches National Monument as described in Desert Solitaire. This exploration fosters in students a sense of place and connection with their home environment. With little alteration, the curriculum can be used by students to examine their own ecosystem, even if it …

Atomization Enthalpies And Enthalpies Of Formation Of The Germanium Clusters, Ge5, Ge6, Ge7, And Ge8 By Knudsen Effusion Mass Spectrometry, Karl A. Gingerich, R W. Schmude, M Sai Baba, Giovanni Meloni

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The high-temperature mass spectrometric method was employed to measure the equilibrium partial pressures of small germanium clusters above liquid germanium contained in a graphite Knudsen cell. These data were combined with new thermal functions, calculated from recent theoretical and spectroscopic molecular parameters, to evaluate the atomization enthalpies and enthalpies of formation of Ge[sub 5]-Ge[sub 8]. Mass spectrometric equilibrium data available in literature were also reevaluated. The following atomization enthalpies, Δ[sub a]H[sub 0][sup o](Ge[sub n],g) and enthalpies of formation Δ[sub f]H[sub 298.15][sup o](Ge[sub n],g), in kJ mol-1, have been obtained: Ge[sub 5], 1313±27 and 548±27, Ge[sub 6], 1649±33 and 583±33, Ge[sub …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Previously, we reported the expression of chimeric lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in Escherichia coli strain JM109 (a K-12 strain) transformed with plasmids containing Haemophilus influenzae lipooligosaccharide synthesis genes (lsg) (Abu Kwaik, Y., McLaughlin, R. E., Apicella, M. A., and Spinola, S. M. (1991) Mol. Microbiol. 5, 2475–2480). In this current study, we have analyzed the O-deacylated LPS and free oligosaccharides from three transformants (designated pGEMLOS-4, pGEMLOS- 5, and pGEMLOS-7) by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization, electrospray ionization, and tandem mass spectrometry techniques, along with composition and linkage analyses. These data show that the chimeric LPS consist of the complete E. coli LPS core …
