Personal Philosophical Perspective On Educational Leadership For Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Deborah L. Padomek Jan 2000

Personal Philosophical Perspective On Educational Leadership For Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Deborah L. Padomek

Graduate Research Papers

Every child deserves the best possible education we can provide them. Burdick, Pond, & Yamamoto (1994) found that too many persons leave our educational system at both the secondary and collegiate levels unequipped with the vocational skills, the self-understanding and career decision-making skills, or the work attitudes that are essential for making a successful transition from school to work. It is important to teach students skills necessary for future employment, and also teach them the importance of being critical thinkers and applying previous learning.

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to compare the actual achievement of 28 students from the Appalachian area over a three year period with their scores on the SON-R to assess if the instrument is a valid predictor of classroom achievement among culturally impaired youth. The subjects were 11 boys and 17 girls ranging from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, lower-middle class backgrounds, and middle-class backgrounds. Correlation of the SON-R raw score with GPA was moderate at .54 and significant at the .01 level. Correlation of SON-R Subtest scores with GPA were moderate for Mosaics (r= . 47, p< 05), Categories (r= .51, p< 01) and Patterns (r= .54, p< 01).

Soil Quality Assessment After Weed-Control Tillage In A No-Till Wheat–Fallow Cropping System, Timothy A. Kettler, Drew J. Lyon, John W. Doran, W. L. Powers, Walter W. Stroup Jan 2000

Soil Quality Assessment After Weed-Control Tillage In A No-Till Wheat–Fallow Cropping System, Timothy A. Kettler, Drew J. Lyon, John W. Doran, W. L. Powers, Walter W. Stroup

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Adoption of reduced-tillage fallow systems in the western USA is limited by winter annual grass weeds such as downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.). Moldboard plowing is an effective means of controlling downy brome in winter wheat (Tritcum aestivum L.)–fallow systems. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of plowing and secondary tillage operations, for the purpose of weed control, on soil quality attributes of a silt loam soil that had been cropped in a subtill or no-till (NT) winter wheat–fallow system for more than 20 yr. Compared with undisturbed NT, downy brome populations in plowed …

Improved Direct Solver For Building Energy Simulation, Michael Crowley, Saleem Hashmi Jan 2000

Improved Direct Solver For Building Energy Simulation, Michael Crowley, Saleem Hashmi

Articles

Finite difference methods, when applied to the differential equations modelling energy flows in buildings, give rise to a system of non-linear difference equations. A frequently used direct solution method involving linearization is analysed and a related method proposed. These and one other connected method are compared using a building related test problem prepared for this purpose. The proposed numerical method is found to produce least error, about 30% less than the commonly used method, and it is recommended for inclusion in building energy simulation software. A fundamental method for estimating the pre conditioning period of a building, arising from the …

Classical Subharmonic Resonances In Microwave Ionization Of Lithium Rydberg Atoms, Michael W. Noel, W. M. Griffith, T. F. Gallagher Jan 2000

Classical Subharmonic Resonances In Microwave Ionization Of Lithium Rydberg Atoms, Michael W. Noel, W. M. Griffith, T. F. Gallagher

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

We have studied the ionization of lithium Rydberg atoms by pulsed microwave fields in the regime in which the microwave frequency is equal to or a subharmonic of the classical Kepler frequency of the two-body Coulomb problem. We have observed a series of resonances where the atom is relatively stable against ionization. The resonances are similar to those seen previously in hydrogen, but with significant quantitative differences. We also present measurements of the distribution of states that remain bound after the microwave interaction for initial states near one of the classical subharmonic resonances.

Superlattices, Polymorphs, And Solid State Nmr Spin-Lattice Relaxation Measurements Of 2,6-Di-T-Butylnaphthalene, Arnold L. Rheingold, Joshua S. Figueroa, Cecil Dybowski, Peter A. Beckmann

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Two polymorphs of 2,6-di-tert-butylnaphthalene, which differ by a factor of twelve in the number of crystallographically independent tert-butyl group environments, have been characterized by a synergistic combination of low-frequency 1H NMR spin–lattice relaxation rate measurements and conventional crystallographic structure determinations.

Modeling Fuzzy Data In Qualitative Marketing Research, Sajeev Varki, Bruce Cooil, Roland T. Rust Jan 2000

Modeling Fuzzy Data In Qualitative Marketing Research, Sajeev Varki, Bruce Cooil, Roland T. Rust

College of Business Faculty Publications

In marketing, qualitative data are used in theory development to investigate marketing phenomena in more depth. After qualitative data are collected, the judgment-based classification of items into categories is routinely used to summarize and communicate the information contained in the data. In this article, the authors provide marketing researchers with a method that (1) provides useful substantive information about the proportion and degree to which items belong to several categories and (2) measures the classification accuracy of the judges. The model is called the fuzzy latent class model (FLCM), because it extends Dillon and Mulani's (1984) latent class model by …

Contactless Thermally Stimulated Lifetime Measurements In Detector-Grade Cadmium Zinc Telluride, Royal Kessick, Gary Tepper, Ed Lee, Ralph James Jan 2000

Contactless Thermally Stimulated Lifetime Measurements In Detector-Grade Cadmium Zinc Telluride, Royal Kessick, Gary Tepper, Ed Lee, Ralph James

Chemical and Life Science Engineering Publications

Contactless thermally stimulated lifetime measurements were performed on detector-grade Cd1−xZnxTe (x∼0.1) crystals using a pulsed lasermicrowavecavityperturbation method. The carrier lifetime decreased from approximately 30 μs at 110 K to 4 μs at 160 K, and then remained relatively constant from 160 to 300 K. The sudden drop in carrier lifetime within a particular temperature range is consistent with the thermal activation of a charge trap with a detrapping time longer than the carrier lifetime. The maximum trap activation temperature and the minimum detrapping time are estimated from the lifetime versus temperature curve to be approximately 160 …

Magnetic Coupling In Neutral And Charged Cr-2, Mn-2, And Crmn Dimers, N. Desmarais, F. A. Reuse, S. N. Khanna Jan 2000

Magnetic Coupling In Neutral And Charged Cr-2, Mn-2, And Crmn Dimers, N. Desmarais, F. A. Reuse, S. N. Khanna

Physics Publications

Theoreticalab initio studies of neutral, cationic and anionic Cr2, Mn2, and CrMn dimers have been carried out to explore the progression of magnetic coupling with the number of electrons. It is shown that while Cr2 and Cr−2 have antiferromagnetically coupled atomic spins, Cr+2 has a ferromagneticground state closely followed by an antiferromagnetic state. On the other hand, all Mn2 dimers are ferromagnetic, irrespective of the charge. The neutral CrMn is ferrimagnetic while the charged CrMn are antiferromagnetic. In all cases, the charged dimers are found to be more stable than the neutral ones. The results are compared with available …

Choices And Constraints: Pattern Formation In Oriental Carpets, Carol Bier Jan 2000

Choices And Constraints: Pattern Formation In Oriental Carpets, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Patterns in nature result from dynamic relationships of forces and constraints. What is analogous for patterns in art? Art is created by human hands motivated by inspiration and thought. It is the product of creativity and skill. Creativity is constrained by cognitive processes and skill by the limits of technology. Based upon the author’s studies of Oriental carpets, this paper suggests that patterns in art result from dynamic relationships of choices and constraints. Typically, traditional Oriental carpets from historical rug-weaving regions of the world exhibit a multiplicity of patterns—field patterns and border patterns that express a vast array of designs …

Conflict Resolution : A Counseling Skill, Carol Jean Friedmann Jan 2000

Conflict Resolution : A Counseling Skill, Carol Jean Friedmann

Graduate Research Papers

Conflict resolution is a counseling skill (Ivy, 1994; Haley, 1976; Pearce, 1996). Counselors are in a unique place to both promote conflict resolution skills and use counseling skills while practicing conflict resolution for longer lasting and therapeutic resolutions. Two environments in which counselors have been especially active regarding conflict resolution have been in the schools and in the family (Moore, 1996).

To take a closer look at conflict resolution, this paper will do the following: define conflict resolution; look at common attitudes and ways of handling conflict; examine the effects of destructive conflict resolution and the effects of teaching constructive …
