Assessment Of Oak Woodland Resources In Blm’S Eugene District, David G. Chiller, David G. Vesely, William I. Dean Jan 2000

Assessment Of Oak Woodland Resources In Blm’S Eugene District, David G. Chiller, David G. Vesely, William I. Dean

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

Because of the significant loss of oak (Quercus spp.) habitat and the subsequent increased value placed on oak woodlands for wildlife habitat, the preservation and restoration of native oak woodlands has become a priority for land managers and conservationists in the Western United States. In 1998, reconnaissance surveys were conducted on 13 oak woodland sites managed by the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM’s) Eugene District in Lane County, Oregon. The sites were classified as either meadow-type communities or woodland-type communities; oak patches within the sites were delineated; and the topographic features, vegetation structure, and composition of the sites were …

The purpose of Grant # DE-FG03 98ER62674, Project # 55800112 was to continue a previously funded effort and make a statistical comparison of the respective toxicities of 226Ra vs. 239Pu in dogs. Special emphasis was on the induction of bone tumors that result from the alpha-radiation emitted from either radionuclide. With the support provided, we have completed the statistical analysis of 226Ra and have established a sound basis for the analysis of the corresponding 239Pu data and for the comparison of these 2 nuclides. The analysis of the Ra project is the cornerstone for a determination of the Pu toxicity, …

Composing Research: A Contextualist Paradigm For Rhetoric And Composition, Cindy Johanek Jan 2000

Composing Research: A Contextualist Paradigm For Rhetoric And Composition, Cindy Johanek

All USU Press Publications

In Composing Research, Cindy Johanek offers a new perspective on the ideological conflict between qualitative and quantitative research approaches, and the theories of knowledge that inform them. With a paradigm that is sensitive to the context of one's research questions, she argues, scholars can develop less dichotomous forms that invoke the strengths of both research traditions. Context-oriented approaches can lift the narrative from beneath the numbers in an experimental study, for example, or bring the useful clarity of numbers to an ethnographic study.

Modeling The Evolution Of Meso-Scale Ionospheric Irregularities At High Latitudes, Jan Josef Sojka, L. Zhu, M. David, Robert W. Schunk Jan 2000

Modeling The Evolution Of Meso-Scale Ionospheric Irregularities At High Latitudes, Jan Josef Sojka, L. Zhu, M. David, Robert W. Schunk

All Physics Faculty Publications

The modeling of ionospheric plasma density irregularities (ΔN/N) is a necessary first step towards forecasting ionospheric scintillation effects. This modeling challenge is difficult not only because the linear‐nonlinear saturation levels of instabilities are not completely understood but also because ΔN/N often evolves on time scales which are long compared to the characteristic time constants of the instability drivers. In this study, the linear 1‐D gradient drift instability (GDI) is used in a high latitude simulation of ΔN/N evolution. For the first time snapshots (maps) of ΔN/N are presented demonstrating that it is possible to use …

Measurements Of Electronic Properties Of Conducting Spacecraft Materials With Application To The Modeling Of Spacecraft Charging, W. Y. Chang, John R. Dennison, Parker Judd

All Physics Faculty Publications

This paper describes the results of the first stage of this project, measurements of the electronic properties of conducting spacecraft materials. We begin with a description of the required measurements and specifics of the experimental methods used. A complete list of the conducting materials studied, justification of their selection for study, and a summary of the important results of the measurements is presented. This is followed by detailed measurements and analysis for one representative conductor, namely polycrystalline Au. We end with a description of incorporation of these measurements into the NASCAP database.

All Physics Faculty Publications

We demonstrate that ultrafast pump–probe reflectivity measurements from bulk Si samples using a Ti:sapphire femtosecond oscillator (λ=800 nm) can be used to measure the Si surface recombination velocity. The technique is sensitive to recombination velocities greater than ∼104 cm s−1

Extended Conformal Symmetry, James Thomas Wheeler Jan 2000

Extended Conformal Symmetry, James Thomas Wheeler

All Physics Faculty Publications

We show that the grading of fields by conformal weight, when built into the initial group symmetry, provides a discrete, non-central conformal extension of any group containing dilatations. We find a faithful vector representation of the extended conformal group and show that it has a scale-invariant scalar product and satisfies a closed commutator algebra. The commutator algebra contains the infinite Heisenberg and Virasoro algebras. In contrast to the classical treatment of scale invariance, covariant derivatives and gauge transformations automatically incorporate the correct conformal weights when the extended symmetry is gauged.

Inception Of Snapover And Gas Induced Glow Discharges, J. T. Galofaro, B. V. Vayner, D. C. Ferguson, W. A. Degroot, C. D. Thomson, John R. Dennison, R. E. Davies

All Physics Faculty Publications

Ground based experiments of the snapover phenomenon were conducted in the large vertical simulation chamber at the Glenn Research Center (GRC) Plasma Interaction Facility (PIF). Two Penning sources provided both argon and xenon plasmas for the experiments. The sources were used to simulate a variety of ionospheric densities pertaining to a spacecraft in a Low Earth Orbital (LEO) environment. Secondary electron emission is believed responsible for dielectric surface charging, and all subsequent snapover phenomena observed. Voltage sweeps of conductor potentials versus collected current were recorded in order to examine the specific charging history of each sample. The average time constant …

Dynamic Environmental Policy In Developing Countries In The Presence Of A Balance Of Trade Deficit And A Tariff, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Hamid Beladi, Dug Man Lee Jan 2000

Dynamic Environmental Policy In Developing Countries In The Presence Of A Balance Of Trade Deficit And A Tariff, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Hamid Beladi, Dug Man Lee

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

We first review the literature pertaining to the protection of the modem sector in developing countries (DCs ). We then discuss the nexuses between protection, economic dualism, and optimal environmental policy in DCs. Next, in the theoretical part of the paper, we construct a dynamic model of the environmental policy formulation process in a stylized DC in which there is a balance of trade deficit, and a tariff that protects the modem-also the import competing and the polluting-sector. The employment and output effects of three different pollution taxes are analyzed. These taxes incorporate different assumptions about the DC government's ability …

A Theoretical Inquiry Into Aspects Of The Structure And The Management Of Ecological-Economic Systems, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 2000

A Theoretical Inquiry Into Aspects Of The Structure And The Management Of Ecological-Economic Systems, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

We use the theory of continuous-time Markov chains (CTMCs) to analyze hitherto unstudied questions about jointly determined ecological-economic systems. Two specific questions are examined. First, on the methodological front, we show how the theory of CTMCs can be used to effectively model dynamic and stochastic ecological-economic systems. Then, given recent concern about the sustainability of desirable states and lock-in into undesirable states, we partition the state space of our stylized ecological-economic system into good and bad states, and demonstrate the formal relationship between these two sets of states. Second, we discuss a way of looking at the task of managing …

Implementing Arrow-Debreu Equilibria By Trading Infinitely Lived Securities, Kevin X.D. Huang, Jan Werner Jan 2000

Implementing Arrow-Debreu Equilibria By Trading Infinitely Lived Securities, Kevin X.D. Huang, Jan Werner

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

We show that Arrow-Debreu equilibria with countably additive pnces In infinite-time economy under uncertainty can be implemented by trading infinitely-lived securities in complete sequential markets under two different portfolio feasibility constraints: wealth constraint, and essentially bounded portfolios. Sequential equilibria with no price bubbles implement Arrow-Debreu equilibria, while those with price bubbles implement Arrow-Debreu equilibria with transfers. Transfers are equal to the value of price bubbles on initial portfolio holdings. Price bubbles may arise in sequential equilibrium under the wealth constraint, but with essentially bounded portfolios.

An Analysis Of Persistence, Resilience, And The Conservation Of Keystone Species, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 2000

An Analysis Of Persistence, Resilience, And The Conservation Of Keystone Species, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Ecologists and economists are increasingly in agreement that ecological and economic systems are linked and that these systems should be viewed as one system. However, because this recognition has been recent, there are very few formal studies of jointly determined ecologicaleconomic systems (ecosystems). Consequently, this paper has two objectives. First, the ecological concepts of persistence and resilience are characterized in the context of a stylized ecosystem. Next, these concepts are used to study a conservation problem with two noteworthy features. In this problem, the obj ects of interest are keystone species, and society is assumed to derive benefits from the …

Wetland Mitigation And Amphibians: Preliminary Observations At A Southwestern Illinois Bottomland Hardwood Forest Restoration Site, Kenneth S. Mierzwa Jan 2000

Wetland Mitigation And Amphibians: Preliminary Observations At A Southwestern Illinois Bottomland Hardwood Forest Restoration Site, Kenneth S. Mierzwa

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Much has been written on amphibian declines attributed to habitat loss or fragmentation. Much less is known about the response of amphibians to restoration of wetland habitat. Amphibians were monitored at a series of southwestern Illinois wetland mitigation sites from 1995-1998. By the end of the study period, all seven species of amphibians previously known from the site had been found within restored wetlands, and an eighth species had apparently colonized the site. Amphibian species associated with open sunlit wetlands were the first to enter the mitigation sites and were the most abundant. As trees mature and mitigation sites become …

Towards Testing The Maldacena Conjecture With Sdlcq, Uwe Trittmann Jan 2000

Towards Testing The Maldacena Conjecture With Sdlcq, Uwe Trittmann

Physics Faculty Scholarship

We consider the Maldacena conjecture applied to the near horizon geometry of a D1-brane in the supergravity approximation and present numerical results of a test of the conjecture against the boundary field theory calculation using supersymmetric discrete light-cone quantization (SDLCQ). We present numerical results with approximately 1000 times as many states as we previously considered. These results support the Maldacena conjecture and are within 10–15% of the predicted numerical results in some regions. Our results are still not sufficient to demonstrate convergence, and, therefore, cannot be considered to a numerical proof of the conjecture. We present a method for …
