Mpj: Mpi-Like Message Passing For Java, Bryan Carpenter, Vladimir Getov, Glenn Judd, Anthony Skjellum, Geoffrey C. Fox Jan 2000

Mpj: Mpi-Like Message Passing For Java, Bryan Carpenter, Vladimir Getov, Glenn Judd, Anthony Skjellum, Geoffrey C. Fox

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

Recently, there has been a lot of interest in using Java for parallel programming. Efforts have been hindered by lack of standard Java parallel programming APIs. To alleviate this problem, various groups started projects to develop Java message passing systems modeled on the successful Message Passing Interface (MPI). Official MPI bindings are currently defined only for C, Fortran, and C++, so early MPI-like environments for Java have been divergent. This paper related an effort undertaken by a working group of the Java Grande Forum, seeking a consensus on an MPI-like API, to enhance the viability of parallel programming using Java.

Parallel Computers And Complex Systems, Geoffrey C. Fox, Paul D. Coddington Jan 2000

Parallel Computers And Complex Systems, Geoffrey C. Fox, Paul D. Coddington

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We present an overview of the state of the art and future trends in high performance parallel and distributed computing, and discuss techniques for using such computers in the simulation of complex problems in computational science. The use of high performance parallel computers can help improve our understanding of complex systems, and the converse is also true — we can apply techniques used for the study of complex systems to improve our understanding of parallel computing. We consider parallel computing as the mapping of one complex system — typically a model of the world — into another complex system — …

Characterization Of Poly-Si Thin Films Deposited By Magnetron Sputtering Onto Ni Prelayers, Elena A. Guliants, Wayne A. Anderson Jan 2000

Characterization Of Poly-Si Thin Films Deposited By Magnetron Sputtering Onto Ni Prelayers, Elena A. Guliants, Wayne A. Anderson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A method of producing a polycrystalline silicon thin film on a foreign substrate without subsequent annealing has been developed. Thermally evaporated 5–100 nm thick Nifilms served as prelayers for magnetron sputtered Si thin films. A continuous film was obtained as a result of metal induced growth of polysilicon during low temperature (below 600 °C) deposition. The film uniformity is promising for large area device applications. The influence of the Ni prelayer thickness on the grain size of thus obtained films was investigated. Atomic force microscopy and cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy studies revealed features in the 150–600 nm size range while …

The Bridge

This account of the life and activities of a Danish religious fanatic who played a significant role in emigration has been prepared on the basis of materials available in this country. Further items are available in Denmark, but on the basis of what is known to be available, it is doubtful that this would make any appreciable difference. To my knowledge, this is the only English language story of his life.

Mixups In The Warehouse Centralization And Decentralization In The Multi-Plant Firm, Lynn Hunnicutt Jan 2000

Mixups In The Warehouse Centralization And Decentralization In The Multi-Plant Firm, Lynn Hunnicutt

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Single-plant firms choose quantity/quality levels to maximize profits. Multi-plant firms face this decision and must also choose how many decision makers to have. This paper presents two case studies and a model of a multi-plant firm in which overhead costs are lower with one decision-maker (centralization), but the mass of information and the need for timely decisions make occasional mixups unavaoidable. Multiple decision makers (decentralization) solves the mixup problem. Standardization-treating different outlets similarly in response to costly mixups-appears in the case studies, and is demonstrated as a result in the model.

Measurements Of Electronic Properties Of Conducting Spacecraft Materials With Application To The Modeling Of Spacecraft Charging, W. Y. Chang, Jr Dennison, Parker Judd Jan 2000

Measurements Of Electronic Properties Of Conducting Spacecraft Materials With Application To The Modeling Of Spacecraft Charging, W. Y. Chang, Jr Dennison, Parker Judd

Conference Proceedings

Many spacecraft system anomalies and component failures are known to result from spacecraft charging which is due to the bombardments of spacecraft by energetic electrons, ions, and photons in natural space surrounding [Hastings and Garrett, 1996; Bedingfield et al., 1996; Leach et al., 1995]. To assist spacecraft designers in accommodating and mitigating the harmful charging effects on spacecraft, NASA has developed an extensive set of engineering tools to predict the extent of charging in various spacecraft environments (for example, NASCAP/LEO, NASCAP/GEO, and POLAR) [Mandell et al., 1993]. However, current NASCAP databases lack electronic properties …

Empirical Support For Asymmetry Of The Distribution Of Effort, David L. Dickenson Jan 2000

Empirical Support For Asymmetry Of The Distribution Of Effort, David L. Dickenson

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

When employers observe imperfect measures of worker effort, theorists typically assume that the observation of effort is unimodal and symmetrically distributed. This paper presents empirical evidence from two experimental work environments that question the assumption of symmetric distributions of observed effort. For these piece-rate work environments we find that observed effort is significantly negatively skewed (i.e., modal> mean effort). Two possible explanations are intra-period learning and/or on-the-job leisure. There are both theoretical and practical implications of this asymmetry. Some implications that are discussed, include: self-selection into rank -order tournaments, optimal wage spreads in rank -order tournaments, and optimal wage contracts …

On Infinite-Horizon Minimum-Cost Hedging Under Cone Constraints, Kevin X.D. Huang Jan 2000

On Infinite-Horizon Minimum-Cost Hedging Under Cone Constraints, Kevin X.D. Huang

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

We prove there exists and analyze a strategy that minimizes the cost of hedging a liability stream in infinite-horizon incomplete security markets with a type of constraints that feasible portfolio strategies form a convex cone. We provide a theorem that extends Stiemke Lemma to over cone domains and we use the result to construct a series of primal-dual problems. Applying stochastic duality theory, dynamic programming technique and the theory of convex analysis to the dual formulation, we decompose the infinite-horizon dynamic hedging problem into one-period static hedging problems such that optimal portfolios in different events can be solved for independently.

A Look At Biseparating Maps From An Algebraic Point Of View, Melvin Henriksen, Frank A. Smith Jan 2000

A Look At Biseparating Maps From An Algebraic Point Of View, Melvin Henriksen, Frank A. Smith

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In [ABN], Araujo, Beckenstein, and Narici add the capstone to a series of papers by several groups of authors by showing that if ρ is a biseparating map between two algebras of all real or complex-valued functions on realcompact spaces, then it is a continuous multiple of an isomorphism between these rings. Their proof uses relatively powerful analytic and topological techniques. In what follows, the extent to which such a result can be generalized to a wider class of algebras using algebraic techniques is investigated. We are unable, however to obtain the main result of [ABN] using these techniques.

When Is |C(X X Y)| = |C(X)||C(Y)|?, O. T. Alas, W. W. Comfort, S. Garcia-Ferreira, Melvin Henriksen, R. G. Wilson, R. G. Woods

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Sufficient conditions on the Tychonoff spaces X and Y are found that imply that the equation in the title holds. Sufficient conditions on the Tychonoff space X are found that ensure that the equation holds for every Tychonoff space Y . A series of examples (some using rather sophisticated cardinal arithmetic) are given that witness that these results cannot be generalized much.

Mis Legitimacy And The Proposition Of A New Multi-Dimensional Model Of Mis, Gondy Leroy, Paul Benjamin Lowry, H. Wayne Anderson, Dennis C. Wilson, Lin Lin Jan 2000

Mis Legitimacy And The Proposition Of A New Multi-Dimensional Model Of Mis, Gondy Leroy, Paul Benjamin Lowry, H. Wayne Anderson, Dennis C. Wilson, Lin Lin

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This paper addresses the definition of MIS and the legitimacy of MIS as an academic discipline. Both sides of the MIS legitimacy debate are presented, with the authors embracing the diversity of MIS as a strength that enhances the legitimacy of the MIS discipline. Based on the diversity theory of MIS, the authors propose a new-multidimensional model of MIS that presents a new way of looking at the discipline and the researchers who work in it.

Pornography And The International Internet: Internet Content Regulation In Australia And The United States, Meghan A. Wharton Jan 2000

Pornography And The International Internet: Internet Content Regulation In Australia And The United States, Meghan A. Wharton

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

In response to a vast concern about the widespread availability of pornographic materials on the Internet, the United States legislature passed the Communications Decency Act of 1996. Just prior to this legislation, the Australian government began investigating possible regulatory schemes for online content, culminating in the Broadcasting Services Amendment of 1999, which attempted to address the presence of pornographic material on the Internet. This article discusses, compares and analyzes the American and Australian systems of content regulation on the Internet and the effect that such legislation has had on content hosts.

Use Of The Generalized Integral Transform Method For Solving Equations Of Solute Transport In Porous Media, Chongxuan Liu, Jim E. Szecsody, John M. Zachara, William P. Ball Jan 2000

Use Of The Generalized Integral Transform Method For Solving Equations Of Solute Transport In Porous Media, Chongxuan Liu, Jim E. Szecsody, John M. Zachara, William P. Ball

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The generalized integral transform technique (GITT) is applied to solve the one-dimensional advection-dispersion equation (ADE) in heterogeneous porous media coupled with either linear or nonlinear sorption and decay. When both sorption and decay are linear, analytical solutions are obtained using the GITT for one-dimensional ADEs with spatially and temporally variable flow and dispersion coefficient and arbitrary initial and boundary conditions. When either sorption or decay is nonlinear the solutions to ADEs with the GITT are hybrid analytical-numerical. In both linear and nonlinear cases, the forward and inverse integral transforms for the problems described in the paper are apparent and straightforward. …

Alkalization Of Aluminum Clusters, B. K. Rao, P. Jena Jan 2000

Alkalization Of Aluminum Clusters, B. K. Rao, P. Jena

Physics Publications

Equilibrium geometries, binding energies, ionization potentials, and electron affinities of neutral and charged Aln clusters (n⩽8) decorated with alkali atoms such as Li and K have been calculated using molecular orbital theory based on density functional formalism and generalized gradient approximation. While the electron affinities and the ionization potentials depend on size, no clear signatures of shell closings are found in this size range. Similar studies on Al5Xm  (X=Li, K, 1⩽m⩽4) also fail to provide any indication consistent with shell closings. On the other hand, the ionization potentials and electron affinities of aluminum clusters decrease with the addition of alkali …

The Status Of The Blacknose Shiner (Notropis Heterolepis) Tn Iowa: A Preliminary Survey, Neil P. Bernstein, Michael Getting, Timothy Kamp, Stevenson Christain, Ryan Smith, Joseph Steele, Steven Steele Jan 2000

The Status Of The Blacknose Shiner (Notropis Heterolepis) Tn Iowa: A Preliminary Survey, Neil P. Bernstein, Michael Getting, Timothy Kamp, Stevenson Christain, Ryan Smith, Joseph Steele, Steven Steele

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

During the last 45 years, the blacknose shiner (Notropis heterolepis) has been restricted to a three county area in northwestern Iowa. We surveyed locations where this siltation-intolerant species had been captured to update the status of the fish in the state. Streams were blocked with nets on both the upstream and downstream ends of sample areas, and fish were collected with a backpack electrofisher and seines. Lakes where the blacknose shiner had been found were also sampled. No blacknose shiners were found and several possible explanations are offered for their absence from historical sites.
