Abstract

Pancreatic β-cells exhibit bursting oscillations with a wide range of periods. Whereas periods in isolated cells are generally either a few seconds or a few minutes, in intact islets of Langerhans they are intermediate (10–60 s). We develop a mathematical model for β-cell electrical activity capable of generating this wide range of bursting oscillations. Unlike previous models, bursting is driven by the interaction of two slow processes, one with a relatively small time constant (1–5 s) and the other with a much larger time constant (1–2 min). We consider a ring of identical neurons with delayed nearest neighborhood inhibitory interaction. Under general conditions, such a network has a slowly oscillatory synchronous periodic solution which is completely characterized by a scalar delay di erential equation with negative feedback. Despite the fact that the slowly oscillatory periodic solution of the scalar equation is stable, we show that the associated synchronous solution is unstable if the size of the network is large.

Using a completely analytic procedure—based on a suitable extension of a classical method—we discuss an approach to the Poincaré–Mel’nikov theory, which can be conveniently applied also to the case of nonhyperbolic critical points, and even if the critical point is located at the infinity. In this paper, we concentrate our attention on the latter case, and precisely on problems described by Kepler-type potentials in one or two degrees of freedom, in the presence of general time-dependent perturbations. Intermittent Synchronization Of Resistively Coupled Chaotic Josephson Junctions, James A. Blackburn, Gregory L. Baker, H.J.T. Smith

Numerical simulations have been used to investigate the dynamics of a pair of resistively linked Josephson junctions with ac bias. For suitable choices of parameters, the chaotic states of the two junctions become intermittently synchronized. Intervals of synchronization are interleaved between bursts of desynchronized activity. The distributions of these laminar times and their dependence on the coupling strength are determined. The role of phase winding in the definition of synchronization intervals is considered.

An expert system is proposed to help non-operation research users to formulate goal programs. The developmental tool being used is VP-Expert. The proposed expert system will used constraint information to assist users in goal selection. Goal structure will be constructed using a pairwise comparison technique, similar to the AHP approach.

This unit was developed and created for children as an interdisciplinary study for a New York City public school setting in the Bronx. Through trips, children learn about the goods and services provided as well as the various ways water is used within the neighborhood The curriculum allows for many opportunities for parents to be partners in their children's education which is emphasized throughout the lesson plans provided.

We have recognized that the natural tendency to teach according to the structure of one’s own understanding runs contrary to established models of cognitive development. Bloom’s Taxonomy has provided a basis for establishing a more efficacious pedagogy. Emphasizing a hierarchical progression of skill sets and gradual learning through example, our approach advocates teaching software development from the inside/out rather than beginning with either console apps or monolithic designs.

The essence of the project is to approach the legends and myths through the senses, placing them in the memory and into the viewers imagination by means of narrative imagery and fantastical sounds. Despite growing up on the west coast of Scotland I never knew the stories of the Celts, they have only recently become a part of my imagination. Colby College Watershed Study: Other Area Studies

The Colby Environmental Assessment Team (CEAT) engaged in an extensive data collection and analysis effort from September to December of 2000 to produce a comprehensive evaluation of the ecological health of the Lake Wesserunsett ecosystem. CEAT examined several factors related to lake water quality, including land use within the watershed, the impacts of residential and commercial development, and physical and chemical measurements of the lake itself. Lake water quality was the primary focus of the study due to its predictive value regarding overall watershed function and viability.
