A search for the leptonic decays of W bosons produced in the reaction e+ p → e+ W± X at a centre-of-mass energy of 300GeV has been performed with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb-1. Three events consistent with W → eν decay are found, giving a cross section estimate of 0.9+10-07±0.2 pb, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction. The corresponding 95% C.L. upper limit on the cross section is 3.3 pb. A search for the decay W → μν has a …

Social Science Research Findings And Educational Policy Dilemmas: Some Additional Distinctions, Steven I. Miller, Marcel Fredericks Jan 2000

Social Science Research Findings And Educational Policy Dilemmas: Some Additional Distinctions, Steven I. Miller, Marcel Fredericks

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The article attempts to raise several distinctions regarding the presumed relationship of social science research findings to social policy making. The distinctions are made using Glymour's critique of the Bell Curve. An argument is made that (1) social science models and research findings are largely irrelevant to the actual concerns of policy makers and (2) what is relevant, but overlooked by Glymour, is how ideological factors mediate the process. The forms that ideological mediation may take are indicated.

Singular Solutions To A Nonlinear Elliptic Boundary Value Problem Originating From Corrosion Modeling, Kurt M. Bryan, Michael Vogelius Jan 2000

Singular Solutions To A Nonlinear Elliptic Boundary Value Problem Originating From Corrosion Modeling, Kurt M. Bryan, Michael Vogelius

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

We consider a nonlinear elliptic boundary value problem on a planar domain. The exponential type nonlinearity in the boundary condition is one that frequently appears in the modeling of electrochemical systems. For the case of a disk we construct a family of exact solutions that exhibit limiting logarithmic singularities at certain points on the boundary. Based on these solutions we develop two criteria that we believe predict the possible locations of the boundary singularities on quite general domains.

Nanoscopic Switching Behavior Of Epitaxial Srbi2Ta2O9 Films Deposited By Pulsed Laser Deposition, Alexei Gruverman, A. Pignolet, K. M. Satyalakshmi, M. Alexe, N. D. Zakharov, D. Hesse

Alexei Gruverman Publications

We report results on scanning force microscopy (SFM) studies of epitaxial SrBi2Ta2O9 films which, in conjunction with complementary x-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy data, allow us to establish direct correlation between the crystallographic structure at the submicrometer range and the nano- and macroscopic switching behavior of the films. SFM topographic analysis of the films revealed a high degree of inhomogeneity at the submicrometer level: a number of rectangular and spherical grains protruding out of the flat surface. It has been found that the ferroelectric behavior of the films is primarily due to the …

Intrinsic Ferroelectric Coercive Field, Stephen Ducharme, V.M. Fridkin, A.V. Bune, S.P. Palto, L.M. Blinov, N.N. Petukhova, S.G. Yudin Jan 2000

Intrinsic Ferroelectric Coercive Field, Stephen Ducharme, V.M. Fridkin, A.V. Bune, S.P. Palto, L.M. Blinov, N.N. Petukhova, S.G. Yudin

Stephen Ducharme Publications

The Landau-Ginzburg theory of ferroelectricity predicts the intrinsic coercive field for polarization reversal, but the observed extrinsic coercive field is always much smaller as a result of nucleation, dynamic processes not covered by the static theory. We have realized the intrinsic coercive field for the first time, in two-dimensional Langmuir-Blodgett polymer films as thin as 1 nm. The measured coercive field is in good agreement with the theoretical intrinsic value, exhibits the expected dependence on temperature, and does not depend on thickness below 15 nm.

P-Selectin Or Intercellular Adhesion Molecule (Icam)-1 Deficiency Substantially Protects Against Atherosclerosis In Apolipoprotein E-Deficient Mice, Robert G. Collins, Rizwan Velji, Natalia V. Guevara, M. John Hicks, Lawrence Chan, Arthur L. Beaudet Jan 2000

P-Selectin Or Intercellular Adhesion Molecule (Icam)-1 Deficiency Substantially Protects Against Atherosclerosis In Apolipoprotein E-Deficient Mice, Robert G. Collins, Rizwan Velji, Natalia V. Guevara, M. John Hicks, Lawrence Chan, Arthur L. Beaudet

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The expression of leukocyte and endothelial cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) is essential for the emigration of leukocytes during an inflammatory response. The importance of the inflammatory response in the development of atherosclerosis is indicated by the increased expression of adhesion molecules, proinflammatory cytokines, and growth factors in lesions and lesion-prone areas and by protection in mice deficient in various aspects of the inflammatory response. We have quantitated the effect of deficiency for intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1, P-selectin, or E-selectin on atherosclerotic lesion formation at 20 wk of age in apolipoprotein (apo) E(- /-) (deficient) mice fed a normal chow diet. …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Marlys R. Frohwein

Graduate Research Papers

Someone once said that to be a great educator was to be like a prophet. You would need to prepare young people not for today, but for thirty years into the future. How do we go about making all the changes that would be necessary to answer all the pressing needs facing most schools? Glickman (1993) has suggested the following:

Success is the intelligent use of mistakes in self-renewing schools. The moral imperative of the schools is for its members to move into their areas of incompetence: If we already knew exactly how to do this work, we would not …

It discusses the theoretical concepts underlying passive microwave remote sensing of sea ice, and it summarizes the historical use of satellite microwave radiometry in the Arctic region. In addition, this paper discusses the derivation of climatically important sea ice variables, including sea ice extent, concentration, multiyear ice fraction, and snow melt onset, with additional comments on the precision and accuracy of the remote sensing …

Unidentified Orbital Debris: The Case For A Market-Share Liability Regime, Mark J. Sundahl Jan 2000

Unidentified Orbital Debris: The Case For A Market-Share Liability Regime, Mark J. Sundahl

UC Law SF International Law Review

As the volume of debris in the planet's orbit continues to grow, the risks and costs associated with orbital collisions are taking their toll on the space industry. The United Nations Convention on International Liability for Damage Caused by Space Objects seeks to address this modern day tragedy of the commons, yet it applies only to large, identifiable pieces of orbital debris. As most debris consists of small fragments, the source of which cannot be identified, the U.N. Convention is limited in its effect.

This Note addresses the problem of assigning liability for harm caused by unidentified orbital debris. It …

Extensive Forest Leaf Area Survey Aiming At Detection Of Vegetation Change In Subarctic-Boreal Zone, Tomoko Kusakabe, Hayato Tsuzuki, Gary B. Hughes, Tatsuo Sweda

Statistics

The warming resulting from increasing anthropogenic carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses is expected to be most prominent in the subarctic-boreal region of the Northern Hemisphere. With the objective of setting up a baseline to monitor possible vegetation change in this region, a continuous vegetation profile extending 600 km from Edmonton, Alberta to Cluff Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada was measured using an airborne infrared laser altimeter mounted on a helicopter. Then the distribution of leaf area index over the same 600 km long transect was estimated from this vegetation profile based on a series of plot surveys on the ground to …
