Gender Related Differences In Career Patterns Of Principals In Alabama: A Statewide Study, William A. Spencer, Frances K. Kochan Jan 2000

Gender Related Differences In Career Patterns Of Principals In Alabama: A Statewide Study, William A. Spencer, Frances K. Kochan

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The purpose of this research was to determine the status of women administrators in the Alabama in terms of demographic and career patterns. A survey was sent to all principals in Alabama. Five hundred-fifty, or 42% of the principals responded. In Alabama, women principals are generally more recent in their position, are somewhat more likely to have come directly from the classroom, and have less mobility in acquiring the position.

Pushpush Is Np-Hard In 2d, Erik D. Demaine, Martin L. Demaine, Joseph O'Rourke Jan 2000

Pushpush Is Np-Hard In 2d, Erik D. Demaine, Martin L. Demaine, Joseph O'Rourke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We prove that a particular pushing-blocks puzzle is intractable in 2D, improving an earlier result that established intractability in 3D [OS99]. The puzzle, inspired by the game *PushPush*, consists of unit square blocks on an integer lattice. An agent may push blocks (but never pull them) in attempting to move between given start and goal positions. In the PushPush version, the agent can only push one block at a time, and moreover, each block, when pushed, slides the maximal extent of its free range. We prove this version is NP-hard in 2D by reduction from SAT.

Defining Failure Of Passive Transfer In South Dakota Beef Calves, A. K. Courtney, W. B. Epperson, T. A. Wittig, R. J. Pruitt

South Dakota Beef Report, 2000

Failure of calves to ingest and absorb immunoglobulin from colostrum is a risk factor for illness and decreased performance. Blood samples were taken from 752 calves at three SDSU research units. Total protein in blood, closely correlated to colostral immunoglobulin absorption, was determined and calf health records were collected. Using this data, a classification table of sensitivity and specificity was constructed to determine the relationship between total protein and calf illness and to classify calves as having adequate colostral absorption or inadequate colostral absorption (failure of passive transfer). Along with sensitivity and specificity, positive and negative likelihood ratios were calculated …

The New Performer, Sheila A. Malone Jan 2000

The New Performer, Sheila A. Malone

SWITCH

This article presents a discussion of the broadening definitions of performer and performance and the ways in which technology contributes to that flexibility through this intermix of the real world and its interaction with virtual reality. The author then details how the nature of this relationship not only shifts the role of performer but redefines performance as both real and virtual. She argues how new media in the age of technology has opened the doors for its visual, aural and textual information to both mimic and record reality.

Plecoptera And Trichoptera Species Distribution Related To Environmental Characteristics Of The Metal-Polluted Arkansas River, Colorado, L. P. Ruse, Scott J. Herrmann Jan 2000

Plecoptera And Trichoptera Species Distribution Related To Environmental Characteristics Of The Metal-Polluted Arkansas River, Colorado, L. P. Ruse, Scott J. Herrmann

Western North American Naturalist

The Upper Arkansas catchment has been polluted with heavy metals from mining for almost 140 yr. Adult Plecoptera and Trichoptera species distributions were recorded from 22 stations along 259 km of main river during 1984–85 so that these could be related to metal deposition and other environmental characteristics. Chemically or physically perturbed sites had poor species richness compared with adjacent sites. There was no sequential downstream increase in species numbers. Filter-feeders proportionally increased downstream as predators declined; these proportions were reset at a high-energy site before the trend resumed. Using canonical correspondence analysis, we found that species composition was most …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The analysis of parity nonconservation (PNC) measurements performed on 232Th by the TRIPLE Collaboration has been extended to include the neutron energy range of 250 to 1900 eV. Below 250 eV all ten statistically significant parity violations have the same sign. However, at higher energies PNC effects of both signs were observed in the transmission of longitudinally polarized neutrons through a thick thorium target. Although the limited experimental energy resolution precluded analysis in terms of the longitudinal asymmetry, parity violations were observed and the cross section differences for positive and negative neutron helicities were obtained. For comparison, a similar …

Integrated Management Tactics For Predicting And Alleviating Pocket Gopher (Thomomys Spp.) Damage To Conifer Reforestation Plantings, Richard M. Engeman, Gary W. Witmer Jan 2000

Integrated Management Tactics For Predicting And Alleviating Pocket Gopher (Thomomys Spp.) Damage To Conifer Reforestation Plantings, Richard M. Engeman, Gary W. Witmer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Pocket gophers cause extensive damage to reforestation plantings in the western United States, and pose acute and chronic problems for forest managers. We examine the components of an integrated pest management strategy for reducing pocket gopher damage to conifers: the predictive factors for assessing the risk for damage, techniques for monitoring gopher populations and assessing efficacy of control methods, and damage control strategies and methods. The information in each component is reviewed and presented so that an optimal damage reduction plan can be developed in a logical, cost-effective, environmentally responsible fashion.
