Hay Testing And New Marketing Program, Allen Johnson Feb 2000

Hay Testing And New Marketing Program, Allen Johnson

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (Hay & Grain Branch) Hay testing program is now entering its 13th year of testing hay for Kentucky producers. The Department continues to use NIR forage analysis equipment. The program has made many improvements and much information has been gained. We continue to strive for quality control and producing accurate results. Recently, many new updates have occurred. New hardware and software have been added, along with the recent purchase of a second hay testing van. By placing a toll free call (1-800- 248-4628) to the Department of Agriculture in Frankfort, we will find a …

An Alfalfa Disease Calendar, Paul Vincelli Feb 2000

An Alfalfa Disease Calendar, Paul Vincelli

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

The following calendar provides producers and agricultural professionals with insights that may improve alfalfa production in several ways. First, knowing when to expect certain diseases improves one's ability to diagnose disease problems, which is a fundamental foundation for disease management. The many UK Extension Service publications on alfalfa as well as publications like the Alfalfa Analyst and the Compendium of Alfalfa Diseases, all are useful for diagnosis, but none provides a precise calendar of when to expect activity of alfalfa diseases in Kentucky. An alfalfa disease calendar can also provide occasional insights into timely management practices. For example, being …

Fertilizing Alfalfa For Profit, Monroe Rasnake, Steven G. Isaacs Feb 2000

Fertilizing Alfalfa For Profit, Monroe Rasnake, Steven G. Isaacs

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Alfalfa has the potential for producing high yields of high quality forage with good management. A key component of good management is supplying plant nutrients in adequate quantities and proper balance. In Kentucky, this requires fertilizing soils with agricultural limestone, commercial fertilizers and/or animal manures. Good soil fertility is necessary for alfalfa stand establishment, high yields and long stand life.

Teachers And Tests: Exploring Teachers' Perceptions Of Changes In The New York State Testing Program, S. G. Grant Feb 2000

Teachers And Tests: Exploring Teachers' Perceptions Of Changes In The New York State Testing Program, S. G. Grant

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

How do teachers change their pedagogical practices? While many current initiatives seek to raise educational standards and improve student academic performance, there is a curious gap in national and state reforms. Considerable attention is given to defining higher expectations for what students will know and be able to do, yet little attention is given to how teachers should learn new pedagogical ideas and practices. This exploratory study uses focus group interview data collected over two years to examine how cross-subject matter groups of elementary and secondary New York State teachers respond to one way of learning to change their classroom …

Hydrogen Bonding In Alcohol Clusters: A Comparative Study By Infrared Cavity Ringdown Laser Absorption Spectroscopy, Robert A. Provencal, Raphael N. Casaes, Katja Roth, Joshua B. Paul, Chris N. Chapo, Richard J. Saykally, Gregory S. Tschumper, Henry F. Schaefer Feb 2000

Hydrogen Bonding In Alcohol Clusters: A Comparative Study By Infrared Cavity Ringdown Laser Absorption Spectroscopy, Robert A. Provencal, Raphael N. Casaes, Katja Roth, Joshua B. Paul, Chris N. Chapo, Richard J. Saykally, Gregory S. Tschumper, Henry F. Schaefer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Infrared cavity ringdown laser absorption spectroscopy has been used to study the O-H stretching vibrations of jet-cooled ethanol and butanol clusters. Three bonded O-H stretches were attributed to the ethanol dimer, indicating the presence of more than one conformer in the molecular beam. One unresolved feature was measured for both the trimer and tetramer. To facilitate spectral assignment, the vibrational frequencies and intensities have been calculated for the ethanol dimer using second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory. Three bonded O-H stretches have also been measured for the butanol dimer, suggesting that more than one conformer is present in the molecular beam. Vibrational …

A Newly-Discovered Cataclysmic Binary Near The Rosat Galactic Plane Source Rx J1910.8+2856, J R. Thorstensen, F Haberl

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report the discovery of a new cataclysmic binary star from the ROSAT Galactic Plane Survey. The star has V >∼ 18.5atminimumlightandwehavemeasureditasbrightasV = 15.7. Spectroscopy shows broad hydrogen and helium emission lines; HeII λ4686 is not detected. Hα radial velocities yield an orbital period of 0.1429 ± 0.0004 d (3.430 ± 0.010 h). Time- series photometry covering one orbital cycle near maximum light shows irregular variability, but no evidence of an eclipse. ThesystemappearstobeanewdwarfnovaoftheUGemorZ Cam type, and is unlikely to be a magnetic system. Its period is unusually short for a U Gem star.

Curiously, the new cataclysmic binary is 83′′ …

A typical problem in statistics is as follows: there is some observable data Xn = (X1,..., Xn), and a parameter of interest θ which is related in such a way to the distribution of Xn that meaningful conclusions about θ can be drawn based on Xn. Sometimes data Xn is observed keeping the objective parameter θ in mind, at other times the parameter appears while trying to model the observed data.Once the data is observed and the parameter fixed, the questions that have to be addressed are as follows:(I) How to estimate θ from the data Xn?(II) Given an estimator …

On Quantitative Evaluation Of 3-D Histo-Pathological Images From Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope., P. S. Umesh Adiga Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Automation of image analysis in the bio-medical ficld is one of the important achievements of applied image processing research. The rapid development in the electronic instrumentation during 1960s and 70s made it possible to automate the routine process of diagnosis and prognosis of many discases. Development of high resolution imaging instruments such as X-ray CT, MRI, etc., for macro imaging and electron microscope, confocal microscope, etc., for micro imaging has given a tremendous boost to the advancement of medical field. Advancement in the field of computing has made it possible to reconstruct the pictures of internal organs of the body …
