The Effects Of Peer-Tutoring Learning Disabled Students In A Resource Center Setting On Generalization Of Skills, Patricia L. Grieves May 2000

The Effects Of Peer-Tutoring Learning Disabled Students In A Resource Center Setting On Generalization Of Skills, Patricia L. Grieves

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of peer tutoring on the comprehension of science vocabulary and terms and determine if those study skills methods taught would generalize to the studying of social studies vocabulary and terms. A cross-age peer tutoring program pairing seven seventh grade learning disabled students with seven eighth grade regular education tutors was used. Tutors worked with tutees for an eight week program tutoring in science vocabulary and terms through two study skills methods, Self-testing Techniques and Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review. Two methods were used to determine results. The first was a …

Paper Session I-A - The Von Braun Team, From The Beginnings Of Modern Space Flight To The Future, This Is How We Go!, Ron Caswell

Space Congress® Proceedings

With the desire to help bring the world’s space programs into the future it is helpful to study successful people who have contributed significantly in space endeavors, and see how they made their contributions. The two great men who contributed the most to modern space flight are Wernher von Braun (pronounced: von Brown) and Russian born Sergei Korolev. Werner led the development of the Saturn 5 moon rocket. I believe the Soviet military did Korolev in, more about him later. From the foundations of space exploration these great men laid, the future of human space exploration will be built! My …

Proceedings Of The 2000 Onr Decision-Support Workshop Series: The Human-Computer Partnership In Decision-Support, Collaborative Agent Design Research Center

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The Decision Support Workshop of May 2-4, 2000 held in San Luis Obispo, Cal., was the second in a series that was started one year earlier as a joint project of the Office of Naval Research and the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center of Cal Poly.

The goal of this series of Workshops is to provide a forum where connections can be established on one hand between developers and proponents of decision support tools, with potential users such as managers of large, complex organizations/systems on the other. Clearly, the military belong to this class of users and it is therefore …

Gender Differences In Mathematics Anxiety And Achievement: Grades 4-8, Juliet H. Mcginley May 2000

Gender Differences In Mathematics Anxiety And Achievement: Grades 4-8, Juliet H. Mcginley

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate gender differences in mathematics anxiety as it is related to mathematics achievement. It was expected that there would not be a gender difference in mathematics achievement, but that there would be a gender difference in math anxiety. Specifically, it was expected that females would have a higher math anxiety than males, and that this difference would magnify in the higher grades. The participants were 250 students in grades 4-8 from a Catholic elementary school in a middle-class suburb in Southern New Jersey. Prior to their mathematics midterm examination, the participants completed the …

The Relationship Between The Congruence Of Vocational Interests And College Major And Self-Concept, Amina C. Husain May 2000

The Relationship Between The Congruence Of Vocational Interests And College Major And Self-Concept, Amina C. Husain

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not there is a relationship between the congruence (agreement) of an individual's vocational interests and academic major and the level of self-concept. This study reports on the level of self-concept and the degree of congruence between the selection of an academic major and their personality type or profile using the Self Directed Search (Holland, 1994). The level of self-concept was determined by using the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (Fitts, 1965). The congruence score was obtained by utilizing was the Zener-Schnuelle Congruence Index (Robbins, Harvey, & Kandefer 1978). Sixty college freshmen and …

A Correlational Study Of Social Skills, Problem Behaviors And Academic Competence Among First Grade Students, Colleen Van Zelst May 2000

A Correlational Study Of Social Skills, Problem Behaviors And Academic Competence Among First Grade Students, Colleen Van Zelst

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social skills functioning, problem behaviors and academic competence among elementary school children. Thirty-seven first grade students were subjects in the study. The Social Skills Rating System was used to measure each subject's social skills functioning, problem behaviors and academic competence. The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was calculated to determine if there was a correlation between the variables. The results of the study indicated a significant positive correlation between social skills functioning and academic competence. A significant negative correlation was found between social skills functioning and problem behaviors and also …

Performance Analysis Of Mobile Agents For Filtering Data Streams On Wireless Networks, David Kotz, Guofei Jiang, Robert Gray, George Cybenko, Ronald A. Peterson May 2000

Performance Analysis Of Mobile Agents For Filtering Data Streams On Wireless Networks, David Kotz, Guofei Jiang, Robert Gray, George Cybenko, Ronald A. Peterson

Computer Science Technical Reports

Wireless networks are an ideal environment for mobile agents, because their mobility allows them to move across an unreliable link to reside on a wired host, next to or closer to the resources they need to use. Furthermore, client-specific data transformations can be moved across the wireless link, and run on a wired gateway server, with the goal of reducing bandwidth demands. In this paper we examine the tradeoffs faced when deciding whether to use mobile agents to support a data-filtering application, in which numerous wireless clients filter information from a large data stream arriving across the wired network. We …

Gender Identity And Course Selection, Michele Nasife-Brown May 2000

Gender Identity And Course Selection, Michele Nasife-Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Differences between males and females in cognitive skills during adolescence are trivial, but despite this absence of differences females are less likely to pursue advanced courses in math and science, and those who do are more likely to drop out before finishing. This has implications, because some females may have personality characteristics that lead them away from stereotypical careers. The consensus of the research is that females are not encouraged to pursue careers in math and science because they are seen as masculine careers. This study examined gender identity and how it correlates with academic major and career choice in …

Phage Therapy : An Alternative To Antibiotics, Maria A. Appeaning May 2000

Phage Therapy : An Alternative To Antibiotics, Maria A. Appeaning

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Bacteria resistant to most or all available antibiotics are causing increasingly serious problems and raising widespread fears of returning to a pre-antibiotic era of untreatable infections and epidemics. Despite intensive work by drug companies, no new classes of antibiotics have been found in the last 30 years . There are hopes that the newfound ability to sequence entire microbial genomes and to determine the molecular bases of pathogenicity will open new avenues for treating infectious disease, but other approaches are also being sought with increasing fervor. One result is a renewed interest in the possibilities of bacteriophage (phage) therapy - …

64 Orionis: Three-Dimensional Orbit And Physical Parameters, Colin D. Scarfe, David J. Barlow, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have obtained radial velocities of the components of the short-period subsystem of the B-type triple star 64 Orionis, covering a full cycle of the long-period orbit since the date of our earlier paper by Fekel & Scarfe. We use all of our radial velocities, together with available speckle interferometry, to derive a three-dimensional orbit for the long-period system. The system has orbital periods of 14.57213 days and 12.98 yr. We also determine spectroscopically a magnitude difference at 4500 Å of 1.0 ± 0.1 between the components of the close pair. Although radial velocities of the third component continue to …
