A Spectroscopic Redshift For The Cl 0024+16 Multiple Arc System: Implications For The Central Mass Distribution, Tom Broadhurst, Xiaosheng Huang, Brenda Frye, Richard Ellis May 2000

A Spectroscopic Redshift For The Cl 0024+16 Multiple Arc System: Implications For The Central Mass Distribution, Tom Broadhurst, Xiaosheng Huang, Brenda Frye, Richard Ellis

Physics and Astronomy

We present a spectroscopic redshift of z = 1.675 for the well-known multiply lensed system of arcs seen in the z = 0.39 cluster Cl 0024+16. In contrast to earlier work, we find that the lensed images are accurately reproduced by a projected mass distribution which traces the locations of the brightest cluster elliptical galaxies, suggesting that the most significant minima of the cluster potential are not dynamically erased. The averaged mass profile is shallow and consistent with predictions of recent numerical simulations. The source redshift enables us to determine an enclosed cluster mass of M(<100 kpc h-1) = …

Snapover: Anomalous Plasma Current Collection By Positively Biased Conductors When Surrounded By A Dielectric, Clint Thomson, John R. Dennison May 2000

Snapover: Anomalous Plasma Current Collection By Positively Biased Conductors When Surrounded By A Dielectric, Clint Thomson, John R. Dennison

All Physics Faculty Publications

Over the last decade, high-powered spacecraft have been designed that will operate at voltages greater than 100 V. At these voltages, the solar arrays can undergo both destructive arcing at negative biases, and plasma electron current collection at positive biases. Furthermore, above some critical positive bias voltage (~100 V), the electron current collected by the array interconnects increases dramatically through a phenomenon termed Asnapover@. During snapover, large portions of the solar array cover glass charge positively, and begin to draw electron current from the plasma as if it were a conducting surface. This leads to substantial power losses for the …

Forward Ion Acceleration In Thin Films Driven By A High-Intensity Laser, Anatoly Maksimchuk, S. Gu, K. Flippo, Donald P. Umstadter, V. Yu. Bychenkov May 2000

Forward Ion Acceleration In Thin Films Driven By A High-Intensity Laser, Anatoly Maksimchuk, S. Gu, K. Flippo, Donald P. Umstadter, V. Yu. Bychenkov

Donald Umstadter Publications

A collimated beam of fast protons, with energies as high as 1.5 MeV and total number of ≳109, confined in a cone angle of 40°±10° is observed when a high-intensity high-contrast subpicosecond laser pulse is focused onto a thin foil target. The protons, which appear to originate from impurities on the front side of the target, are accelerated over a region extending into the target and exit out the back side in a direction normal to the target surface. Acceleration field gradients ∼10 GeV/cm are inferred. The maximum proton energy can be explained by the charge-separation electrostatic-field acceleration …

Local Properties Of Query Languages, Guozhu Dong, Leonid Libkin, Limsoon Wong May 2000

Local Properties Of Query Languages, Guozhu Dong, Leonid Libkin, Limsoon Wong

Kno.e.sis Publications

In this paper we study the expressiveness of local queries. By locality we mean — informally — that in order to check if a tuple belongs to the result of a query, one only has to look at a certain predetermined portion of the input. Examples include all relational calculus queries. We start by proving a general result describing outputs of local queries. This result leads to many easy inexpressibility proofs for local queries. We then consider a closely related property, namely, the bounded degree property. It describes the outputs of local queries on structures that locally look “simple.” Every …

Fept:Sio2 Granular Thin Film For High Density Magnetic Recording, C.P. Luo, Sy_Hwang Liou, David J. Sellmyer

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

Nanocomposite FePt:SiO2 thin films consisting of high anisotropy FePt particles embedded in a SiO2 matrix have been successfully fabricated by annealing the as-deposited FePt/SiO2 multilayers. By adjusting the annealing temperatures and compositions, films were obtained with coercivity of 3.8 kOe and grain size of 10 nm, which are suitable for high-density magnetic recording. Magnetic activation volumes were measured and thermal stability is discussed.

David Sellmyer Publications

The effects of a partial substitution of Ga for Fe on the structure and magnetic properties of mechanically alloyed Nd8.4Fe87.1B4.5 were studied. With increasing Ga content, the magnetic properties of the nanocomposite magnets first improve, reach maxima at 1.1 at.% Ga, and then degrade. The addition of Ga helps to control the morphology, especially the grain sizes of both α -Fe and Nd2Fe14B.

Curie Temperature Of Multiphase Nanostructures, Ralph Skomski, David J. Sellmyer May 2000

Curie Temperature Of Multiphase Nanostructures, Ralph Skomski, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

The Curie temperature and the local spontaneous magnetization of ferromagnetic nanocomposites are investigated. The macroscopic character of the critical fluctuations responsible for the onset of ferromagnetic order means that there is only one Curie temperature, independent of the number of magnetic phases present. The Curie temperature increases with the grain size and is, in general, larger than predicted from the volume averages of the exchange constants. However, the Curie-temperature enhancement is accompanied by a relative reduction of the spontaneous magnetization. Due to the quadratic dependence of the permanent-magnet energy product on the spontaneous magnetization, this amounts to a deterioration of …

Univercity News (2000-05-01)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Integrating Domain Knowledge With Data: From Crisp To Probabilistic And Fuzzy Knowledge, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Leonid Reznik May 2000

Integrating Domain Knowledge With Data: From Crisp To Probabilistic And Fuzzy Knowledge, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Leonid Reznik

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is well known that prior knowledge about the domain can improve (often drastically) the accuracy of the estimates of the physical quantities in comparison with the estimates which are solely based on the measurement results. In this paper, we show how a known method of integrating crisp domain knowledge with data can be (naturally) extended to the case when the domain knowledge is described in statistical or fuzzy terms.

Granularity As An Optimal Approach To Uncertainty - A General Mathematical Idea With Applications To Sleep, Consumption, Traffic Control, Learning, Etc., Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Traditional statistical and fuzzy approaches to describing uncertainty are continuous in the sense that we use a (potentially infinite) set of values from the interval [0,1] to characterize possible degrees of uncertainty. In reality, experts describe their degree of belief by using one of the finitely many words from natural language; in this sense, the actual description of expert uncertainty is granular.

In this paper, we show that in some reasonable sense, granularity is the optimal way of describing uncertainty. A similar mathematical idea explains similar "granularity" in such diverse areas as sleep, consumption, traffic control, and learning.

A New Graph Characteristic And Its Application To Numerical Computability, Frank Harary, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre May 2000

A New Graph Characteristic And Its Application To Numerical Computability, Frank Harary, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Many traditional numerical algorithms include a step on which we check whether a given real number a is equal to 0. This checking is easy for rational numbers, but for constructive real numbers, whether a number is 0 or not is an algorithmically undecidable problem. It is therefore desirable to re-formulate the existing algorithms with as few such comparisons as possible. We describe a new graph characteristic; this characteristic describes how the number of comparisons in an algorithm can be reduced.

A Comment On The Shape Of The Solution Set For Systems Of Interval Linear Equations With Dependent Coefficients, Goetz Alefeld, Vladik Kreinovich, Guenter Mayer, Michael Huth

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

This article is a short supplement to our previously published paper, in which we prove that each semialgebraic set can be represented as a projection of a solution set of some system of linear equations with dependent coefficients. The new results says that interval occurring can be chosen as narrow as wanted. This new result is proven by a simple linear transformation.

An Infrastructure For A Mobile-Agent System That Provides Personalized Services To Mobile Devices, Debbie O. Chyi May 2000

An Infrastructure For A Mobile-Agent System That Provides Personalized Services To Mobile Devices, Debbie O. Chyi

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

In this paper, we present the design of a mobile-agent system that provides a mobile user with a personalized information retrieval service and we describe the implementation of the infrastructure for such a system. This "Personal Agent System" gathers information from the Internet and uses context-aware mechanisms to manage the information according to a mobile user's needs and preferences. The user's schedule and location are the context indicators in this system. These indicators are critical in ensuring that users obtain only the information they want, receive information in a form that is most useful for viewing on their mobile device, …

A Simulation Of Auroral Absorption, Eric Michael Greenberg May 2000

A Simulation Of Auroral Absorption, Eric Michael Greenberg

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

HF radio transmissions propagate long distances by reflecting off the ionosphere. At high latitudes radio propagation is strongly affected by the northern lights (aurora borealis), which causes ionization at low altitudes and hence the absorption of radio waves. Models of this process are still in a primitive state. A simulation of radio wave propagation was created in order to test Foppiano and Bradley's empirical model of auroral absorption. The simulation attempts to predict the net absorption of signals at a receiver by simulating a large number of transmitters, even though the exact sources of the signals are unknown. Although the …

Fisheries Research Report No. 119 - Final Report, Frdc Project 95/037: The Biology And Stock Assessment Of The Tropical Sardine, Sardinella Lemuru, Off The Mid-West Coast Of Western Australia, Daniel J. Gaughan, Ronald W. Mitchell May 2000

Mitchell

Fisheries Research Reports

Exploratory fishing for the tropical sardine, Sardinella lemuru, offshore of Geraldton on the midwest coast of Western Australia in the early 1990s, led to the establishment of a developmental purse seine fishery in this region. This fishery showed potential for substantial expansion, but as there was no information on S. lemuru in WA there was a need to undertake research during the developmental period. The biology and fishery for S. lemuru in WA were therefore investigated over a three year period between July 1995 and June 1998 with the aim of providing stock assessment advice.

The biology of S. lemuru …

Fisheries Research Report No. 121 - Synopsis Of The Biology And Exploitation Of The Blue Swimmer Crab, Portunus Pelagicus Linnaeus, In Western Australia, Mervi I. Kangas

Fisheries Research Reports

This report summarises the existing studies which have provided information on the biology, population characteristics and exploitation of the blue swimmer crab, Portunus pelagicus, in Western Australia. Gaps in the existing knowledge are also highlighted to assist in targeting new research initiatives. Portunus pelagicus matures at about one year and in temperate regions females mate only once a year. This is because mature crabs moult only once a year. It appears from studies to date that Western Australian crabs are one genetic population. This is being further investigated. Migration of the blue swimmer crab occurs between estuaries and the ocean …
