Performance Of Bootstrap Confidence Intervals For L-Moments And Ratios Of L-Moments., Suzanne Glass May 2000

Performance Of Bootstrap Confidence Intervals For L-Moments And Ratios Of L-Moments., Suzanne Glass

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

L-moments are defined as linear combinations of expected values of order statistics of a variable.(Hosking 1990) L-moments are estimated from samples using functions of weighted means of order statistics. The advantages of L-moments over classical moments are: able to characterize a wider range of distributions; L-moments are more robust to the presence of outliers in the data when estimated from a sample; and L-moments are less subject to bias in estimation and approximate their asymptotic normal distribution more closely.

Hosking (1990) obtained an asymptotic result specifying the sample L-moments have a multivariate normal distribution as n approaches infinity. The standard …

On The Non-Uniqueness Of Q-Cones Of Matroids, James Oxley, Geoff Whittle May 2000

On The Non-Uniqueness Of Q-Cones Of Matroids, James Oxley, Geoff Whittle

Faculty Publications

Let M be a rank-r simple GF(q)-representable matroid. A q-cone of M is a matroid M′ that is constructed by embedding M in a hyperplane of PG(r,q), adding a point p of PG(r,q) not on H, and then adding all the points of PG(r,q) that are on lines joining p to an element of M. If r(M) > 2 and M is uniquely representable over GF(q), then M′ is unique up to isomorphism. This note settles a question made explicit by Kung by showing that if r(M) = 2 or if M is not uniquely representable over GF(q), then M′ need …

On The 3-Connected Matroids That Are Minimal Having A Fixed Spanning Restriction, Manoel Lemos, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

Let N be a minor of a 3-connected matroid M and let M′ be a 3-connected minor of M that is minimal having N as a minor. This paper commences the study of the problem of finding a best-possible upper bound on |E(M′) - E(N)|. The main result solves this problem in the case that N and M have the same rank. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Machine Learning And Small Robot Navigation, Christopher Ireland May 2000

Machine Learning And Small Robot Navigation, Christopher Ireland

Senior Scholar Papers

Developing successful navigation and mapping strategies is an essential part of autonomous robot research. However, hardware limitations often make for inaccurate systems. This project serves to investigate efficient alternatives to mapping an environment, by first creating a mobile robot, and then applying machine learning to the robot and controlling systems to increase the robustness of the robot system. My mapping system consists of a semi-autonomous robot drone in communication with a stationary Linux computer system. There are learning systems running on both the robot and the more powerful Linux system. The first stage of this project was devoted to designing …

Evolution Of Conceptual Art: A Senior Scholar Project, Kempton Mooney May 2000

Evolution Of Conceptual Art: A Senior Scholar Project, Kempton Mooney

Senior Scholar Papers

In 1965, conceptual art as a term came into use, defining art with primary importance placed on the artists' propositional concept, de-emphasizing the manner of execution. Conceptual art as a popular phenomenon, known as conceptualism, had a profound impact upon the art world as a whole because it could manifest itself in any material or form. It brought forth issues concerning art as a commodity, what art could be, and art's role in society. It set out to shock the art community, to change the language of art, and to introduce a new way of perceiving and discussing art while …

Structured Web Databases, Shuang Li May 2000

Structured Web Databases, Shuang Li

Dissertations and Theses

Recent research has focused on the cooperation of web server and database server software in the deployment of data-intensive web sites. That work has focused either on storing data in a database that can be used to generate the contents of a web site, or on providing interfaces and gateways to enable queries to be invoked from web pages and executed at external database servers.

This thesis describes the implementation of a prototype of the Data Web system that is being implemented at Portland State University. With Data Web, a user can embed in a web page virtual tables that …

Sulfite: Cytochrome C Oxidoreductase From Thiobacillus Novellus, Ulrike Kappler, Brian Bennett, Jörg Rethmeier, Günter Schwarz, Rainer Deutzmann, Alistair G. Mcewan, Christiane Dahl

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Direct oxidation of sulfite to sulfate occurs in various photo- and chemotrophic sulfur oxidizing microorganisms as the final step in the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds and is catalyzed by sulfite: cytochrome c oxidoreductase (EC1.8.2.1). Here we show that the enzyme from Thiobacillus novellus is a periplasmically located αβ heterodimer, consisting of a 40.6-kDa subunit containing a molybdenum cofactor and an 8.8-kDa mono-heme cytochrome c 552 subunit (midpoint redox potential, E m8.0 = +280 mV). The organic component of the molybdenum cofactor was identified as molybdopterin contained in a 1:1 ratio to the Mo content of the enzyme. Electron …

An Addictive Cycle Of Chemical Dependence: Pesticides And The Link To Breast Cancer, Misty Sanford May 2000

An Addictive Cycle Of Chemical Dependence: Pesticides And The Link To Breast Cancer, Misty Sanford

Whittier Scholars Program

This year, an estimated 40,800 women in the United states will die of breast cancer and another 182,800 will be diagnosed with the disease. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. As the result of earlier detection and improved treatment, death rates among young women have declined since 1992. Yet, at the same time, the incidence of breast cancer in American women has increased by a startling forty-four percent. The most pressing question is: what is causing this increase? Established risk factors include a family history of breast cancer , early …

Paper Session Iii-C - Space Studies Curriculum Proposal For Local Graduate Students, Gary A. Dahlke May 2000

Paper Session Iii-C - Space Studies Curriculum Proposal For Local Graduate Students, Gary A. Dahlke

Space Congress® Proceedings

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University introduced the Space Studies curriculum as part of the Master of Aeronautical Science program at the Daytona Beach campus in 1992. With the large population of professional aerospace workers employed at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Station, it is a likely assumption that Space Studies would fit the needs of many of those workers, and thus would be a viable candidate program for introduction at the Patrick AFB Resident Center. Data for this research was obtained through the use of a survey of current ERAU students. The survey results have indicated that there is enough …

Paper Session Iii-C - Successful University-Industrial Partnerships, Elizabeth B. Ward Ph.D.

Space Congress® Proceedings

Higher Education will need to partner more closely with the business and industrial community to prepare their graduates for the workplace of the future. The participation of universities in consortia will continue to increase. Universities will need to work closely with other institutions in order to attract resources needed to serve the many different types of students requiring education in the next century. For example, as they do now, adults who change jobs will seek training in new fields; numbers of traditional students living on campus will decrease as distance learning and home computers forge increasingly significant roles in higher …

“The Way Of The Scientist Deepens Beauty By Increasing Understanding”: Teaching Physics As An Aesthetic Form, Claudine Indigo Kavanagh May 2000

“The Way Of The Scientist Deepens Beauty By Increasing Understanding”: Teaching Physics As An Aesthetic Form, Claudine Indigo Kavanagh

Dissertations and Theses

Educators have struggled to find an appropriate and efficacious method to engage students of science in their classrooms and lecture halls, This investigation presents a theoretical foundation for the use of aesthetic criteria when teaching physics in high school or undergraduate settings and suggests that this may be an effective learning tool. The relationship between science aesthetics and science literacy is pursued here. Included in this study are discussions of the applications of aesthetic judgement by theoretical physicists in the 20th century and and methods for bringing a dialogue concerning natural philosophy and beauty in the science classroom. While many …
