An Improved Limit On The Rate Of The Decay K^+ -> Pi^+ Mu^+ E^-, Duncan Brown, R. Appel May 2000

An Improved Limit On The Rate Of The Decay K^+ -> Pi^+ Mu^+ E^-, Duncan Brown, R. Appel

Physics - All Scholarship

The experiment E865 at BNL places an upper limit on the branching ratio for the decay K+ -> pi+ mu+ e- of 3.9x10^-11 (90% C.L.). Along with with other results this yields a combined upper limit on this branching ratio of 2.8x10^-11. A new upper limit on the branching ratio for pi0 -> mu+ e- of 3.8x10^-10 (90% C.L.) is also established. The experiment and analysis are described.

Dartmouth Scholarship

SN 1997ef has been recognized as a peculiar supernova from its light curve and spectral properties. The object was classified as a Type Ic supernova (SN Ic) because its spectra were dominated by broad absorption lines of oxygen and iron, lacking any clear signs of hydrogen or helium line features. The light curve is very different from that of previously known SNe Ic, showing a very broad peak and a slow tail. The strikingly broad line features in the spectra of SN 1997ef, which were also seen in the hypernova SN 1998bw, suggest the interesting possibility that SN 1997ef may …

Renormalization Scale Invariant Pqcd Predictions For R(E+ E-) And The Bjorken Sum Rule At Next-To-Leading Order, Michael Binger, Chueng-Ryong Ji, David G. Robertson May 2000

Renormalization Scale Invariant Pqcd Predictions For R(E+ E-) And The Bjorken Sum Rule At Next-To-Leading Order, Michael Binger, Chueng-Ryong Ji, David G. Robertson

Physics Faculty Scholarship

We discuss the application of the physical QCD effective charge αV, defined via the heavy-quark potential, in perturbative calculations at next-to-leading order. When coupled with the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie prescription for fixing the renormalization scales, the resulting series are automatically and naturally scale and scheme independent, and represent unambiguous predictions of perturbative QCD. We consider in detail such commensurate scale relations for the e+e− annihilation ratio Re+e− and the Bjorken sum rule. In both cases the improved predictions are in excellent agreement with experiment.

A Comparison Of Academic Growth In Emotionally Disturbed Students In Private Vs. Public School Settings, Thomas J. Diaz May 2000

A Comparison Of Academic Growth In Emotionally Disturbed Students In Private Vs. Public School Settings, Thomas J. Diaz

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to measure the academic growth, in the areas of reading and math ability, between students who are classified emotionally disturbed and placed by the school district in private, out of district schools with similarly classified students who remain in district programs. Other indicators of academic success, such as attendance and frequency of suspension were also compared, statistically, between the two groups. Yet other factors, such as grade retention, counseling and student investment were compared loosely. Sixty high school students, (thirty from each setting) comprise the two groups. Previous academic testing from the 1997/98 school year was …

Comparisons Between Add/Adhd Diagnosed And Non-Diagnosed Boys, Pre-Kindergarten Through Grade Eight, Daniel Del Vecchio

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the Conners' Teacher Rating Scale-Revised: Short Form (CTRS-R: S). The CTRS-R: S is an instrument used for the assessment of attention-deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) and related behavioral problems in children and adolescents. The study included 225 boys in grades Pre-Kindergarten through eight. The subjects were divided into two groups. Group one consisted of 165 boys who were not diagnosed with ADD/ADHD; Group two consisted of 61 boys who had been previously diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. A second analysis regrouped the sample by grade-groups that were consistent …

Approximation Algorithms For The Minimum Bends Traveling Salesman Problem, Cliff Stein, David P. Wagner May 2000

Approximation Algorithms For The Minimum Bends Traveling Salesman Problem, Cliff Stein, David P. Wagner

Computer Science Technical Reports

The problem of traversing a set of points in the order that minimizes the total distance traveled (traveling salesman problem) is one of the most famous and well-studied problems in combinatorial optimization. It has many applications, and has been a testbed for many of the must useful ideas in algorithm design and analysis. The usual metric, minimizing the total distance traveled, is an important one, but many other metrics are of interest. In this paper, we introduce the metric of minimizing the number of turns in the tour, given that the input points are in the Euclidean plane. To our …

Teaching For The Enhancement Of Self-Esteem Of Adolescents With Learning Disabilities, Kathy Carney

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine if participation in structured, self-concept enhancing classroom activities would improve the self-esteem level of adolescents with learning disabilities. Forty-eight high school students identified with learning disabilities participated in this study. One-half of the students served as the control group and worked with the same teacher. The other 24 students were in the experimental group and were instructed by a different teacher who conducted lessons aimed at improving students' level of self-esteem over a period of 15 weeks. Self-esteem scores were obtained by administering the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory to all participants during the …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Locus Of Control, Behavior And Academic Achievement In 5th Grade Students, Dawn Zuber May 2000

A Study Of The Relationship Between Locus Of Control, Behavior And Academic Achievement In 5th Grade Students, Dawn Zuber

Theses and Dissertations

This study attempted to investigate the relationship between locus of control, academic achievement and behavior in 5th grade students. It was hypothesized that locus of control would be more internalized with high academic achievement and less behavior problems. A total of 40 subjects participated. Data was collected using the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale, the Devereux Behavior Scale-School Form and the Metropolitan Achievement Test. Using this data, a relationship was measured using the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient (r). The results demonstrated significant correlations between all of the variables. The results were interpreted to mean that 5th grade students with an …

Shifting Distributional Patterns Of Mammals In Nebraska, Russell A. Benedict, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman May 2000

Shifting Distributional Patterns Of Mammals In Nebraska, Russell A. Benedict, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

New distributional records are presented for 20 species of mammals in Nebraska. The majority of these records appear to represent changes in geographic distribution rather than just better sampling in poorly known areas. One group of mammals, including the opossum, northern myotis, evening bat, red bat, woodchuck, white-footed mouse, and gray fox, is expanding westward, probably in response to increasing woodlands along river systems. Another group, including the meadow vole, masked shrew, and least weasel, is expanding southward, possibly in response to new prey species and changing microclimates. The eastern woodrat appears to be expanding northward in eastern Nebraska. The …

A New Fast And Efficient Conformal Mapping Based Technique For Remote Sensing Data Compression And Transmittal, Joseph Lucente, Dalila Megherbi May 2000

A New Fast And Efficient Conformal Mapping Based Technique For Remote Sensing Data Compression And Transmittal, Joseph Lucente, Dalila Megherbi

Utah Space Grant Consortium

In this paper we deal with a new technique for large data compression. Contour mapping of two dimensional objects is of fundamental importance in remote sensing and computer vision applications. We present extensive algorithms applied to polygonized, simply-connected contours and reproduce desired shapes using an innovative data compression technique based on conformal mapping. In a previous work3,4, through a conformal mapping process, we demonstrated the ability to 1) recognize shapes, and 2) concisely represent shape boundaries using a set of polynomial coefficients derived in the mapping process. In this work we illustrate how these previous results can be …

An Analysis Of Iterative Algorithms For Image Reconstruction From Satellite Earth Remote Sensing Data, Matthew H. Willis May 2000

An Analysis Of Iterative Algorithms For Image Reconstruction From Satellite Earth Remote Sensing Data, Matthew H. Willis

Utah Space Grant Consortium

This paper discusses algorithms for creating enhanced-resolution images from satellite earth remote sensing data. The well-known ART and MART algorithms are discussed, as well as a new class of algorithms-column-normalized algorithms. The SART algorithm is studied as an example of a column-normalized algorithm and is compared structurally to the SIR algorithm to help explain SIR's success at remote sensing image reconstruction. Several reconstruction algorithms are then compared using both simulated and real satellite radiometer data sets.

Low Temperature Anomaly In Mesoscopic Kondo Wires, P. Mohanty, Richard A. Webb May 2000

Low Temperature Anomaly In Mesoscopic Kondo Wires, P. Mohanty, Richard A. Webb

Faculty Publications

We report the observation of an anomalous magnetoresistance in extremely dilute quasi-one-dimensional AuFe wires at low temperatures, along with a hysteretic background at low fields. The Kondo resistivity does not show the unitarity limit down to the lowest temperature, implying uncompensated spin states. We suggest that the anomalous magnetoresistance may be understood as the interference correction from the accumulation of geometric phase in the conduction electron wave function around the localized impurity spin.

Shifts In Mid- To Late-Holocene Anion Composition In Elk Lake (Grant County, Minnesota): Comparison Of Diatom And Ostracode Inferences, Jasmine E. Saros, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Alison J. Smith

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The fossil diatom record from Elk Lake (Grant County, Minnesota) was used to reconstruct salinity and brine type between 2640 and 4645 14C yr BP. This lake was selected for a brine-type reconstruction because a previous study using fossil-ostracode assemblages indicated a shift in anion composition during the mid-Holocene (Smith et al., 1997). Salinity was reconstructed using a transfer function developed for the Northern Great Plains (NGP) of North America; the reconstruction revealed that salinity was higher (1.5–6.2 g l−1) between ~4000 and 4645 14C yr BP and dropped to 0.35–1.2 g l−1 after 4000 14C yr …
