A Toxicity Assessment Of Total Dissolved Solid Ions In Mine Effluent Using Two Common Bioassays: The 22-Hour Microtox Assay And A S. Carpricornutum Growth Assay, Jane Benton Leblond
A Toxicity Assessment Of Total Dissolved Solid Ions In Mine Effluent Using Two Common Bioassays: The 22-Hour Microtox Assay And A S. Carpricornutum Growth Assay, Jane Benton Leblond
Chemistry and Biochemistry
This research evaluated two microassays and a synthetic TDS standard to measure the effects of elevated TDS from mine effluent on biota of freshwater systems. Field samples from Red Dog and Fort Knox mines were tested on Selenastrum capricornutum and the MicroTox assay, and compared to the synthetic standard. Results indicate that the synthetic TDS standard is a poor representation of produced waters with similar total TDS concentrations. Additionally, no correlation was found between the toxicological responses of the two assays. Principle component analysis found the MicroTox assay to be most sensitive to cadmium and chloride. At concentrations present in …
An Investigation Of Environmental Variables Affecting Concentrations Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Eastern Alaska, Timothy S. Howe
An Investigation Of Environmental Variables Affecting Concentrations Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Eastern Alaska, Timothy S. Howe
Theses (Unassigned)
Analytical methods for determining polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in spruce needles were developed and evaluated. Concentrations of four PAHs (phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene and pyrene) were determined in spruce needles collected near Eastern Alaska roadways. These needle concentrations were used to develop multivariate models that described the influence of climate and geographical variables on concentrations. These variables included latitude, longitude, radial distance from urban site, elevation, temperature, precipitation, ecosystem type, tree species, non-volatile extractable content of needles, and forest fire impact. The models show that three possible sources of PAHs exist in eastern Alaska, urban sites (Fairbanks, Anchorage and Valdez), …
Mammalian Mismatch Repair: Hotspots And Protein Complexes, Nancy Matton
Mammalian Mismatch Repair: Hotspots And Protein Complexes, Nancy Matton
Biological Sciences
Deficiencies in DNA mismatch repair have been found in hereditary cancers as well as in sporadic cancers, illustrating the importance of mismatch repair in maintaining genomic integrity. To determine if inefficient mismatch repair can contribute to hotspots of mutation, repair rates were determined 'in vivo' in mammalian cells for mismatched nucleotides located at H-ras codon 10 and compared to previously determined repair rates at a nearby activating hotspot of mutation, H-ras codon 12. Repair rates for H-ras codon 10 are significantly improved over repair rates at codon 12. This indicates that inefficiencies in mismatch repair are responsible, at least in …
Maximizing Qiviut Growth In Muskoxen, Morgan A. Robertson
Maximizing Qiviut Growth In Muskoxen, Morgan A. Robertson
Biological Sciences
Qiviut, the insulating underwool grown annually by muskoxen, is the basis of a successful knitting industry in Alaska. This study tested the hypothesis that the dietary sulfur-amino acid methionine could limit qiviut growth. Effects of commercial rumen-protected methionine supplements were measured in three experiments. In Experiment 1, emergent qiviut growth began in May and June, peaked in August and declined substantially by October. Three commercial methionine supplements were palatable and promoted fiber growth in subadult and adult muskoxen. In Experiment 2, the methionine supplement Smartamine promoted qiviut quality, growth, annual yield and strength. In a commercial enterprise, Experiment 3, Smartamine …
Population Dynamics And Ecology Of Yellow-Cheeked Voles (Microtus Xanthognathus) In Early Post-Fire Seres Of Interior Alaska, Karin Linnaea Lehmkuhl
Population Dynamics And Ecology Of Yellow-Cheeked Voles (Microtus Xanthognathus) In Early Post-Fire Seres Of Interior Alaska, Karin Linnaea Lehmkuhl
Biological Sciences
Yellow-cheeked voles occupy early successional habitats in boreal regions, but specific factors influencing the species' distribution and population dynamics are not well known. Yellow-cheeked voles were studied in three early post-fire habitats in interior Alaska to relate population parameters to habitat characteristics. Voles were live-trapped during June, July, and August of 1997 and 1998, and habitat components were measured withing trapping grids. Capture data were analyzed using the robust design to estimate vole abundance, density, survival, and recruitment. Yellow-cheeked voles were most abundant in the floodplain white spruce, where survival was stable and recruitment was high. The white spruce habitat …
Seasonal Movements Of Broad Whitefish (Coregonus Nasus) In The Freshwater Systems Of The Prudhoe Bay Oil Field, William A. Morris
Seasonal Movements Of Broad Whitefish (Coregonus Nasus) In The Freshwater Systems Of The Prudhoe Bay Oil Field, William A. Morris
Biological Sciences
Adult broad whitefish were tagged with radio transmitters in the Little Putuligayuk and Putuligayuk rivers along the Beaufort Sea coast of the Prudhoe Bay area, Alaska. Thirty-two fish were tagged in Lake Judith, a shallow tundra lake in the Little Putuligayuk River system. An additional 5 fish were tagged in the Putuligayuk River near a suspected spawning and overwintering site. Many fish left the tundra system to overwinter in the west channel of the Sagavanirktok River, however, unexpected movements also occurred. Six (20%) of the fish found in overwintering areas moved to the east channel of the Sagavanirktok River, an …
Adaptation Of Engineering Education In Emerging Technological Revolution: A Review, Casmir I. Agbaraji
Adaptation Of Engineering Education In Emerging Technological Revolution: A Review, Casmir I. Agbaraji
Engineering
The future of engineering education has been a subject of concern in past years. There is no doubt that changes are needed to keep abreast with the new tools of technology and business, and to attract students. The planning of curricula should be governed by the definition of an engineer as the creator for public goods and by the demands of the industry. The tools that were available for engineering education in the past, those that are being presently used, and the techniques that dominate in the twenty-first century are analyzed. The problems associated with the new engineering education are …
Leveraging Alaska North Slope Satellite Oil Field Design With Networked Instrumentation And Control Systems Architecture - Foundation Feldbus, Brian A. Chouinard
Leveraging Alaska North Slope Satellite Oil Field Design With Networked Instrumentation And Control Systems Architecture - Foundation Feldbus, Brian A. Chouinard
Engineering
Since 1988, oil production rates on Alaska's North Slope have faded. The West Sak oil field in the Greater Kuparuk Area was a satellite field targeted to help slow the production decline. The nature of West Sak oil made it prohibitively expensive to produce using conventional methods. Drastic changes in field production design and operational philosophy were required to make West Sak oil economically viable. The instrumentation and controls network architecture leveraged the implementation of this new design and philosophy. This paper examines the technological requirements, establishes evaluation criteria, compares competing options, outlines the design and implementation, and discusses future …

Cognitive Learning In The Presence Of Immediacy: An Exploratory Study Of The Relationship Between Perceived And Actual Cognitive Learning And Nonverbal Immediacy, Keli Hite Mcgee
Communication
The immediacy construct continues to be a hot topic in Instructional Communication. It is shown repeatedly to positively affect student perceptions of the classroom. Although student perceptions of the classroom are important for a more conducive learning environment, increasing student learning is also important. The effects of teacher immediacy on cognitive learning are still unclear due largely in part to the inability to consistently and accurately assess actual learning. Many studies relate cognitive learning to immediacy, but the primary use of student self-reports to measure cognitive learning limits the interpretation to student perceptions of their learning rather than necessarily actual …
Analysis Of The Vocalizations Of Orcinus Orca In Response To Anthropogenic Noise, Carolyn Elizabeth Talus
Analysis Of The Vocalizations Of Orcinus Orca In Response To Anthropogenic Noise, Carolyn Elizabeth Talus
Fisheries
Underwater noise created by vessel traffic in the world's oceans may be detrimental to marine life that relies on acoustic senses for survival. An analytical study was completed which examined changes in vocal behavior of subpod A36, killer whales (Orcinus orca) that reside off Vancouver Island. The average call rate of each call type was calculated from the recordings, and call rates were found to significantly decrease in the presence of vessel noise. Structural characteristics of specific call types such as differences in frequency, duration, and harmonics were also examined and statistically compared with and without boat noise. Differences found …

Femtosecond Luminescence Dynamics In A Nonlinear Optical Organic Dendrimer, O. Varnavski, A. Leanov, L. Liu, James M. Takacs, T. Goodson Iii
James M. Takacs Publications
The ultrafast intrinsic dynamics of an organic dendrimer in solution and in a thin film is reported using fluorescence upconversion spectroscopy. Femtosecond decay is detected at higher emission energies, while at lower energies a fluorescence rise time (∼3 ps) was observed that is dependent on the solvent’s polarity. A strong excitation energy dependence of the decay pattern was also observed. Different synthetic functional groups that comprise the macromolecular dendrimer structure were investigated. The mechanism, which describes the complex dynamics in the dendrimer system, was found to be associated with the excitation of the attached chromophore nitroaminostilbene. These results indicate the …

A Visual Interaction Of Rational And Intuitive Processes, Priscilla Hanson
A Visual Interaction Of Rational And Intuitive Processes, Priscilla Hanson
Dissertations and Theses
The paintings in this exhibition are an investigation of the dichotomy between rational and intuitive processes. The scope ranges from a purely historical perspective to include personal history as well. The work references ancient mythologies and the ordering systems that humans have created to explain the world around them as an expression of rational processes. The objects and symbols used derive from my interest in archaeology, mythology, astrology, and astronomy of the ancient world. Most of the surface on my paintings is unstructured, consisting of loosely applied layers of paint and subtly shifting colors. Surfaces are built up through a …

The Melting Temperature Of Proton-Disordered Hexagonal Ice: A Computer Simulation Of 4-Site Transferable Intermolecular Potential Model Of Water, G.T. Gao, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Hideki Tanaka
Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
We report computer simulation results of free energies of proton-disordered hexagonal ice and liquid water at atmospheric pressure with the 4-site transferable intermolecular potential model of water. A new reference system is used to calculate the free energy of the ice phase. The melting point of proton-disordered hexagonal ice at atmospheric pressure is found to be Tm=238 (±7) K. This result is consistent with a previous estimation, 230K< TmK, from molecular dynamic simulation of the surface melting of the proton-disordered hexagonal ice [G.-J. Kroes, Surf. Sci. 275, 365 (1992)].
