Growth And Fabrication With Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Probe Microscopy Tips, Chin Li Cheung, Jason H. Hafner, Teri W. Odom, Kyoungha Kim, Charles M. Lieber

Barry Chin Li Cheung Publications

Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) probe microscopy tips were grown by a surface growth chemical vapor deposition method. Tips consisting of individual SWNTs (1.5–4 nm in diameter) and SWNT bundles (4–12 nm in diameter) have been prepared by design through variations in the catalyst and growth conditions. In addition to high-resolution imaging, these tips have been used to fabricate SWNT nanostructures by spatially controlled deposition of specific length segments of the nanotube tips.

Operator Split Technique Applied To Random Vibration Of Smart Sdof Mechanical Systems, L. Duval, Mohammad N. Noori, M. A. Savi

Office of the Dean (CENG) Scholarship

A significant amount of research in the last few years has greatly advanced the field of structural control through the use of smart materials. Smart materials have the ability to change shape, stiffness, natural frequency, damping and other mechanical characteristics in response to environmental condition changes. One of he new class of materials with promising applications in structural and mechanical systems are Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs). However, there are few studies where the random response of mechanical systems containing shape memory components has been conducted. Such study is important to verify the feasibility on the use of SMAs in structural …

A Comparative Investigation Of Service-Learning Models In Maryland: Student Outcomes In Relationship To Employability Skills, Ruth Brodsky May 2000

A Comparative Investigation Of Service-Learning Models In Maryland: Student Outcomes In Relationship To Employability Skills, Ruth Brodsky

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

The purpose of this descriptive study was to describe the relationship between structured service-learning outcomes, through Maryland's replication models, and the attainment of employability skills for adolescents. Participants included fifty-five out of ninety-two service-learning coordinators and a panel of experts comprised of five key informants. The site of the study was the state of Maryland, which is divided into twenty-three counties and Baltimore City. Three data gathering procedures were utilized: content analysis of the four most frequently used replication models, a key informant rubric, and a survey of nineteen counties in the state.

A criterion sample of four models was …

Determination Of The Wavelength Dependence On The Metal Catalyzed Degradation Of The Herbicide Atrazine, Timothy Bertram May 2000

Determination Of The Wavelength Dependence On The Metal Catalyzed Degradation Of The Herbicide Atrazine, Timothy Bertram

Honors Theses

Since the advent of modern herbicide use in the early twentieth century, researchers have been plagued with the obvious problem of herbicide disposal. Most herbicides are specifically designed to resist natural degradation processes so that they can remain effective in the field for a substantial amount of time. In addition, they are also made water soluble so that they can be easily applied to crops. Finally, they are specifically produced to kill undesirable plant species in the quickest and often crudest fashions. Due to these specific properties herbicides pose a general threat to other organisms living in the same geographic …

Typophoto: The Visual Dimensionality, Kitae Kim

Theses

This thesis will first document how both typography and photography have merged into a pure form of communication: typophoto. Simultaneously, the study will refine the visual parameters for understanding the concept of typophoto through an examination of the works of a number of designers, design movements and visual theories. The final goal of this thesis study will be to explore a new interpretation of typophoto and to extend its use in the new digital era. In 1925, the designer, painter, photographer and film maker Laszl6 Moholy-Nagy first mentioned the concept or theory of typophoto in Malerei Photographic Film. Typophoto was …

Establishing The Inundation Distance And Overtopping Height Of Paleotsunami From The Late-Holocene Geologic Record At Open-Coastal Wetland Sites, Central Cascadia Margin, Robert B. Schlichting May 2000

Establishing The Inundation Distance And Overtopping Height Of Paleotsunami From The Late-Holocene Geologic Record At Open-Coastal Wetland Sites, Central Cascadia Margin, Robert B. Schlichting

Dissertations and Theses

Mapping and stratigraphic investigations of back barrier, open-coastal plain sites have been used to establish minimum inundation distances and wave heights of tsunami produced by great subduction zone earthquakes in the central Cascadia margin. Cascadia tsunami deposits have been reported for many coseismic subsidence events in bay marsh settings where tidal-channel features focus tsunami energy. Variable magnitude (8.5±0.5 Mw), frequency (500±300 yr recurrence), and rupture geometry produce widely varying computer model outcomes for Cascadia tsunami inundation. The results presented in this thesis provide specific quantitative data regarding tsunami inundation at the open coast.

Anomalous sand sheets that have been characterized …

Phytochemical Comparison Of Puccinellia Arctica To Poa Pratensis, Puccinellia Langeana, And Puccinellia Phryganodes For Evidence Of Chemical Defense, Trent Joseph Volz May 2000

Phytochemical Comparison Of Puccinellia Arctica To Poa Pratensis, Puccinellia Langeana, And Puccinellia Phryganodes For Evidence Of Chemical Defense, Trent Joseph Volz

Plant, Animal and Soil Sciences

Puccinellia arctica is a species of arctic grass that is unpalatable to Canada geese, Branta canadensis, and may be an effective and non-lethal means of controlling the growing populations of urban Canada geese that are problematic in many areas of North America. The secondary metabolite profile of P. arctica was compared to the metabolite profiles of three palatable grass species to determine the plausibility that P. arctica is chemically defended. The volatile and non-volatile secondary metabolite profiles of both P. arctica and the palatable grasses were the same. No alkoloids were detected in any of the grasses. Condensed tannin levels …
