Spectroscopy Of Hydrogen-Bonded Formanilide Clusters In A Supersonic Jet: Solvation Of A Model Trans Amide, A. V. Fedorov, John R. Cable Jun 2000

Spectroscopy Of Hydrogen-Bonded Formanilide Clusters In A Supersonic Jet: Solvation Of A Model Trans Amide, A. V. Fedorov, John R. Cable

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The gas-phase structures of trans-formanilide (FA) clusters containing varying numbers of water and ammonia molecules have been investigated by resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy in a supersonic jet expansion. A single structure is found for the 1:1 cluster of FA with ammonia in which the amide NH group functions as a hydrogen bond donor to the ammonia nitrogen. In contrast, vibronically resolved spectra reveal two distinct structures for the 1:1 cluster with water in which either the amide NH group functions as a hydrogen bond donor or the carbonyl oxygen functions as a hydrogen bond acceptor. The 1:1 clusters with both …

A Therapeutic Model For Amazing Apostasy, Edwin R. Holmes Jun 2000

A Therapeutic Model For Amazing Apostasy, Edwin R. Holmes

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Apostasy is the transition involving disengagement from previously held religious beliefs. Social-psychological investigators of the nature and causes of apostasy have identified varied causes for the transition including weak religious socialization (Hunsberger, 1980, p. 159), commitment to intellectualism (Caplovitz & Sherrow, 1977), aversion to the hypocrisy of others, acute trauma or loss, or discontentment with the promises of religion (Hunsberger, McKenzie, Pratt, & Prancer, 1993).

Most experiences of apostasy follow the pattern that socialization theory predicts, that highly religiously socialized individuals adhere to their beliefs and minimally socialized individuals are more likely to discard their beliefs (Hunsberger, 1980, p. 158). …

Learning Languages And Functions By Erasing, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber, Steffen Lange, Rolf Wiehagen, Thomas Zeugmann Jun 2000

Learning Languages And Functions By Erasing, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber, Steffen Lange, Rolf Wiehagen, Thomas Zeugmann

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

Learning by erasing means the process of eliminating potential hypotheses from further consideration thereby converging to the least hypothesis never eliminated. This hypothesis must be a solution to the actual learning problem. The capabilities of learning by erasing are investigated in relation to two factors: the choice of the overall hypothesis space itself and what sets of hypotheses must or may be erased. These learning capabilities are studied for two fundamental kinds of objects to be learned, namely languages and functions. For learning languages by erasing, the case of learning indexed families is investigated. A complete picture of all separations …

Bernard Lonergan On A Catholic Liberal Arts Education, Richard M. Liddy

Journal of Catholic Education

With a call for integration commonly expected in liberal arts education, this article explores the philosophy of Bernard Lonergan. Highly specialized disciplines, as valuable as they are to preserving and expanding a professional knowledge base, can nonetheless lead to the extreme compartmentalization of education. This article offers a philosophical foundation on which to build a truly Catholic liberal arts education.

Public Policy: Affirmative Action, Social Equity, And Employment Patterns In Michigan's Construction Industry 1966-1997, Henry Joseph Bowers

Dissertations

Affirmative action public policy did not experience much debate when it was put in place during the late 1960’s. However, the debate is occurring in the 1990s. Its merits are being weighed and there are movements locally to eliminate affirmative action policy.

The Michigan construction industry is the focus of this study. This study examined not only these employment outcome benefits, but also outlines the outcome benefit trends over thirty-one years for national employment and employment in the state of Michigan with an emphasis on the construction industry. Details regarding white-collar and blue-collar occupational grouping trends as well as unemployment …

An Investigation Into Relationships Between Alternative Assessment And Pre-Service Elementary Teachers’ Beliefs About Mathematics, David Charles Coffey

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how including alternative assessments in a reform-based mathematics course affects pre-service teachers’ mathematical beliefs. A single section of a mathematics course designed for elementary education majors that employed three different alternative assessments was the setting for the study.

A pre- and post-belief survey completed by students enrolled in the section under study represented the first level of data collection and analysis. The results of the pre-belief survey guided the selection of seven informants from the section and provided belief statements for the informants to verify during subsequent interviews. Based on the data …

Memory For Bizarre Imagery: A Storage-Retrieval Analysis, Mary Louise Lamay Jun 2000

Memory For Bizarre Imagery: A Storage-Retrieval Analysis, Mary Louise Lamay

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Four experiments were conducted to examine the role that storage and retrieval processes play in the bizarreness effect. The experiments provided a test of Riefer and LaMay's (1992) twolactor hypothesis, which states that bizarre stimuli are retrieved from Meitbry better than common stimuli, but that common stimuli are stored better than bizarre stimuli. The experimental results were also used to test the validity of Riefer and Rouder's (1992) and Rouder and Batchelder's (1999) multinomial models for storage and retrieval. The experiments explored several variables known to impact the bizarreness effect, including mixed vs. unmixed lists, list length, presentation rate, level …

First Principles Of Physio-Informatic Systems: Neurocosmology, David Jay Warner

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Physio-informatics is a new systems model for linking human physiologic systems to information systems in the most general way. Physio-informatics is used here to denote a systems based, physiologically robust reference architecture for designing and refining interactive human-computer interface systems in ways that increase operational throughput of information. In this dissertation, a systems model for interactive human-computer interface systems is developed. This model is a physiologically based reference architecture for designing and developing interactive human computer interface systems to match the human nervous system’s ability to transduce, transmit, and render to consciousness the necessary information to interact intelligently with information. …

A Comparison Of Four Curing Lights For Bonding Of Orthodontic Brackets, David Sy Nguyen Jun 2000

A Comparison Of Four Curing Lights For Bonding Of Orthodontic Brackets, David Sy Nguyen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Light cured adhesives have gained more popularity since their introduction more than three decades ago. Photo-polymerization allows more thorough curing on demand and thus facilitates better control of bracket placement. With new technologies, recently developed curing lights promise even more improvement. These systems are not only more sophisticated, but also more sensitive to the types of resins and clinical application. Specific comparison studies of the new systems in the orthodontic bonding are lacking because most of curing lights are originally designed for general dentistry.

This study evaluated the in-vitro ability of four curing lights to polymerize the Transbond XT bonding …

Reflections On Scientific And Religious Metaphor, Ursula Goodenough Jun 2000

Reflections On Scientific And Religious Metaphor, Ursula Goodenough

Biology Faculty Research

The importance of scientific conflicts for theology and philosophy is difficult to judge. In many disputes of significance, prominent scientists can be found on both sides. Profound philosophical and religious implications are sometimes said to be implied by the new theory as well. This article examines the dispute over natural selection between Richard Dawkins and Stephen Jay Gould as a contemporary instance of such a conflict. While both claim that profound philosophical conclusions flow from their own alternative account of evolution, I suggest that the implication is not as great as is claimed and that the alleged implications have as …

An Extension Of Euclidean Distance Matrix Analysis Applied To Craniofacial Growth Prediction, Mark K. Batesole Jun 2000

An Extension Of Euclidean Distance Matrix Analysis Applied To Craniofacial Growth Prediction, Mark K. Batesole

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study is [sic] introduces a new extension of Euclidean Distance Matrix Analysis (EDMA) as applied to growth prediction analysis. Using EDMA eliminates the presupposition of a set growth pattern, which is introduced by traditional superimposition techniques. When EDMA is extended to analyze prediction methodologies, using a non-age-matched growth sample, some shortcomings become evident. These involve bootstrapping techniques, relative difference in growth, and absence of clinical, real world measure. To overcome these issues, a statistical approach using the Wilcoxen signed rank test, absolute difference in growth, and a new method to evaluate the error in a prediction methodology's landmark identification …

An Expert System Solution To Watermarking, David Coumou Jun 2000

An Expert System Solution To Watermarking, David Coumou

Theses

The watermarking system proposed in this paper offers an expert system technique to help solve the ownership claim on digital images. The watermarking system is based on fuzzy logic and was designed with the intent of embedding watermark features such that they are undetectable to the human visual system. To achieve this objective, the development and design of the watermarking scheme was targeted to utilize three of the five perceptual holes of the human visual system: intensity resolution, intensity sensitivity and spatial masking. Basing the design on these characteristics, the resulting watermarking scheme proved to be resilient to several image …

A Vhdl Design For Hardware Assistance Of Fractal Image Compression, Andrew Erickson Jun 2000

A Vhdl Design For Hardware Assistance Of Fractal Image Compression, Andrew Erickson

Theses

Fractal image compression schemes have several unusual and useful attributes, including resolution independence, high compression ratios, good image quality, and rapid decompression. Despite this, one major difficulty has prevented their widespread adoption: the extremely high computational complexity of compression. Fractal image compression algorithms represent an image as a series of contractive transformations, each of which maps a large domain block to a smaller range block. Given only this set of transformations, it is possible to reconstruct an approximation of the original image by iteratively applying the transformations to an arbitrary image. Compression consists of partitioning the image into range blocks …

A Framework For Gis-T Data Sharing, Kenneth Dueker, J. Allison Butler

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

This paper develops a framework and principles for sharing of transportation data. The framework is intended to clarify roles among participants, data producers, data integrators, and data users. The principles are intended to provide guidance for the participants. Both the framework and the principles are based on an enterprise GIS-T data model that defines relations among transportation data elements. The data model guards against ambiguities and provides a basis for the development of the framework and principles for sharing of transportation data. There are two central principles. First is the uncoupling of graphics, topology, position, and characteristics. Second is the …
