How Is A Genre Created? Five Combinatory Hypotheses, Johan F. Hoorn Jun 2000

How Is A Genre Created? Five Combinatory Hypotheses, Johan F. Hoorn

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "How is a Genre Created? Five Combinatory Hypotheses," Johan F. Hoorn discusses that in genre theory, the creation of a genre is usually envisioned as a complex selection procedure in which several factors play an equivocal role. First, he advances that genre usually is investigated at the level of the phenomenon. For instance, questions may drawn on the effects of social status, education, or "intrinsic values" on forming a genre, on an author's decision with regard to in which genre to express his/her creativity. Second, Hoorn attempts to formulate a general mechanism that explains the forming of …

Proposition 48: Knowledge, Attitude And Appreciation In High School Student-Athletes, Robin Salters

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge, attitude, and appreciation of high school student-athletes toward National Collegiate Athletics Association bylaw 14.3, commonly known as Proposition 48. The subjects completed a questionnaire inquiring about their knowledge of Proposition 48 as well as knowledge of its qualifying criteria. Those subjects that acknowledged having heard of the bylaw were then asked questions pertaining to their attitude towards Proposition 48 as a standard for intercollegiate athletics eligibility and the effect of their knowledge of Proposition 48 on their study habits in preparing for the pressures of being an intercollegiate athlete.

Motion Characterization By Temporal Slices Analysis, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Hong-Jiang Zhang, Roland T. Chin Jun 2000

Motion Characterization By Temporal Slices Analysis, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Hong-Jiang Zhang, Roland T. Chin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes an approach to characterize camera and object motions based on the analysis of spatio temporal image volumes. In the spatio-temporal slices of image volumes, motion is depicted as oriented patterns. We propose a tensor histogram computation algorithm to represent these oriented patterns. The motion trajectories in a histogram are tracked to describe both the camera and object motions. In addition, we exploit the similarity of the temporal slices in a volume to reliably partition a volume into motion tractable units.

A Comparative Analysis Of Walking Patterns Between Genu Varum And Normal Subjects, Nerline Varda Maurisseau Jun 2000

A Comparative Analysis Of Walking Patterns Between Genu Varum And Normal Subjects, Nerline Varda Maurisseau

Masters Theses

The problem was to compare angular and linear kinematics, ground reaction forces (GRF), temporal changes, and electromyography (EMG) of selected muscles while walking one gait cycle to a metronome set at 100 beats per minute (bpm) between genu varum and normal men, ages 20-25 years. Results indicated: (a) the Normal Group had a lower stride time than the Genu Varum Group, although the results were not significantly different; (b) the Normal Group showed greater range of motion in the ankle, knee, hip rotation, and tibial rotation angles-however, the results were not significantly different; (c) there was no significant difference in …

Correlation Of A Predictive Analytical Model To Experimental Results For A Thick Composite Plate In A Bolted Joint Configuration, David Dreese Jun 2000

Correlation Of A Predictive Analytical Model To Experimental Results For A Thick Composite Plate In A Bolted Joint Configuration, David Dreese

Theses

The use of composite materials has become more prevalent in recent years. Not only has the range of applications grown, but the configuration of the composite materials has increased in scope as well. The combination of high strength to weight, ability to tailor strength directionally and acoustic properties have pushed the development of fabrication techniques and application for increasingly thick load bearing composites. This project was developed with the desire to study these structures in a manner that would lead to advances in applications and greater understanding of the mechanics involved. Specifically, the response of a thick composite panel fabricated …

Planar Approximation For The Least Reliable Bit Log-Likelihood Ratio Of 8-Psk Modulation, William H. Thesling, Fuqin Xiong, M. J. Vanderaar Jun 2000

Planar Approximation For The Least Reliable Bit Log-Likelihood Ratio Of 8-Psk Modulation, William H. Thesling, Fuqin Xiong, M. J. Vanderaar

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The optimum decoding of component codes in block coded modulation (BCM) schemes requires the use of the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) as the signal metric. An approximation to the LLR for the least reliable bit (LRB) in an 8-PSK modulation based on planar equations with fixed-point arithmetic is developed that is both accurate and easily realisable for practical BCM schemes. Through an error power analysis and an example simulation it is shown that the approximation results in less than 0.06 dB in degradation over the exact expression at an Es/N0 of 10 dB. It is also shown that …

Aseismic Inflation Of Westdahl Volcano, Alaska, Revealed By Satellite Radar Interferometry, Zhong Lu, Charles Wicks, Daniel Dzurisin, Wayne Thatcher, Jeffrey T. Freymuller, Stephen R. Mcnutt, Dorte Mann

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Westdahl volcano, located at the west end of Unimak Island in the central Aleutian volcanic arc, Alaska, is a broad shield that produced moderate-sized eruptions in 1964, 1978–79, and 1991–92. Satellite radar interferometry detected about 17 cm of volcano-wide inflation from September 1993 to October 1998. Multiple independent interferograms reveal that the deformation rate has not been steady; more inflation occurred from 1993 to 1995 than from 1995 to 1998. Numerical modeling indicates that a source located about 9 km beneath the center of the volcano inflated by about 0.05 km³ from 1993 to 1998. On the basis of the …

Conflicting Bureaucracies, Conflicted Work: Dilemmas In Case Management For Homeless People With Mental Illness, Linda E. Francis Jun 2000

Conflicting Bureaucracies, Conflicted Work: Dilemmas In Case Management For Homeless People With Mental Illness, Linda E. Francis

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This ethnographic study finds a case management agency torn between the rules of two conflicting bureaucracies. Funded by a federal grant, the agency is administered by the county, and the regulations of the two systems turn out to be incompatible. This conflict creates dilemmas in providing services to clients: meeting eligibility criteria for services from the federal grant meant the clients did not meet the eligibility criteria for many County services. Agency staff reacted to this dilemma by bending rules, finding loopholes, and investing extra time and emotional labor in each client. The role-conflict engendered by bureaucratic disjunction creates frustration, …

Nutritional Aspects Of Trans Unsaturated Fatty Acids, Mary Cantwell Jun 2000

Nutritional Aspects Of Trans Unsaturated Fatty Acids, Mary Cantwell

Doctoral

Dietary trans unsaturated fatty acids from hydrogenated vegetable and fish oils have been shown to raise plasma low density lipoprotein cholesterol and lower high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels at 10%, 6% and 3% of energy intake. As trans fatty acid intake has not been previously assessed in Ireland a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was developed to assess fat intake with particular focus on trans fatty acids. A nutrient database was developed which included the fatty acid and total trans fatty acid composition of foods (measured by gas chromatography and infra-red spectroscopy) which are sources of fat in the Irish diet. …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Modern interactive services such as information and e-commerce services are becoming increasingly more flexible in the types of user interfaces they support. These interfaces incorporate automatic speech recognition and natural language understanding, and include graphical user interfaces on the desktop and web-based interfaces using applets and HTML forms. To what extent can the user interface software be decoupled from the service logic software (the code that defines the essential function of a service)? Decoupling of user interface from service logic directly impacts the flexibility of services, or, how easy they are to modify and extend. To explore these issues, we …

From Robotic Toil To Symbolic Theft: Grounding Transfer From Entry-Level To Higher-Level Categories1, A Cangelosi, A Greco, S Harnad Jun 2000

From Robotic Toil To Symbolic Theft: Grounding Transfer From Entry-Level To Higher-Level Categories1, A Cangelosi, A Greco, S Harnad

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Neural network models of categorical perception (compression of within-category similarity and dilation of between-category differences) are applied to the symbol-grounding problem (of how to connect symbols with meanings) by connecting analogue sensorimotor projections to arbitrary symbolic representations via learned category-invariance detectors in a hybrid symbolic/non-symbolic system. Our nets are trained to categorize and name 50 × 50 pixel images (e.g. circles, ellipses, squares and rectangles) projected on to the receptive field of a 7 × 7 retina. They first learn to do prototype matching and then entry-level naming for the four kinds of stimuli, grounding their names directly in the …

A Theoretical Model Showing The Effects Of The Fuel Induced Gamma Effect, Bryan Bordeleau Jun 2000

A Theoretical Model Showing The Effects Of The Fuel Induced Gamma Effect, Bryan Bordeleau

Theses

The Fuel Induced Gamma Effect uses pressure data from a single-cylinder directin-jection engine and information about the specific heat ratio, gamma, of the injected fuel to predict the evaporated fuel mass in the piston-cylinder assembly. Thermodynamic theory and ideal gas laws are used to calculate theoretical pressure within the cylinder and this pressure is then compared to the actual pressure measured in the engine. The difference in gamma between the calculated and actual states of the fuel is then used to predict how much fuel has evaporated in the cylinder. This simplistic approach also takes into account information about the …

Calibration Of Optical Digital Fragmentation Measuring Systems, Norbert H. Maerz, Wei Zhou Jun 2000

Calibration Of Optical Digital Fragmentation Measuring Systems, Norbert H. Maerz, Wei Zhou

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Optical granulometry systems like WipFrag are required to measure fragments in situ. That is to say, the fragments are in piles where sorting takes place, where fragments are partially overlapped, and where fines may not be seen because they fall in and behind the coarser fragments, or where the fines are simply too small to be seen. As a result, optical systems tend typically to overestimate the size of the distribution, and underestimate the variability of the distribution. The wider the size distribution being measured, the more severe the problem is. This paper presents the results of a study that …

Effects Of Ozone/Hydrogen Peroxide Pretreatment On Aerobic Biodegradability Of Nonionic Surfactants And Polypropylene Glycol, Mehmet Kitis, Craig D. Adams, John Kuzhikannil, Glen T. Daigger

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Studies were conducted which used the ozone/hydrogen peroxide (O3/H2O2) advanced oxidation process to pretreat three classes of compounds prior to aerobic biological treatment. The study compounds included ethylene oxide/propylene oxide (EO/PO) block copolymers, polypropylene glycols (PPGs), linear secondary alcoholethoxylates (LSAES), and alkylphenolethoxylates (APEs). After preoxidation with ozone and hydrogen peroxide (added at their stoichiometric ratio), 300 mg/L as COD samples were bioassayed in aerobic batch bioassays with a mixed liquor suspended solids concentration of 1500 mg/L. It was found that unoxidized polypropylated compounds (EO/PO block copolymers and PPGs) and LSAEs tended to be biorecalcitrant, …

Multicast Internet Protocol, X. K. Wang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao Jun 2000

Multicast Internet Protocol, X. K. Wang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we first review the existing IPv4 based multicast protocols and identify their shortcomings. We then proposed a new multicast protocol, called Multicast Internet Protocol (MIP), which is both scalable and flexible. The design principle of MIP is fundamentally different from the existing IPv4 based multicast protocols. The issues related to MIP routing and implementations are also studied in this paper.

Aspects Of Information Flow, Andrew P. Black, Jonathan Walpole Jun 2000

Aspects Of Information Flow, Andrew P. Black, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Along with our colleagues at the Oregon Graduate Institute and Georgia Institute of Technology, we have recently been experimenting with real-rate systems, that is, systems that are required to move data from one place to another at defined rates, such as 30 items per second. Audio conferencing or streaming video systems are typical: they are required to deliver video or audio frames from a source (a server or file system) in one place to a sink (a display or a sound generator) in another; the frames must arrive periodically, with constrained latency and jitter. We have successfully built such systems …

Photoionization And Photofragmentation Of Gaseous Toluene Using 80-Fs, 800-Nm Laser Pulses, A. M. Müller, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal, B. Witzel, J. Wanner, K.-L. Kompa

C.J.G.J. Uiterwaal Publications

This paper presents ion yields resulting from multiphoton ionization and fragmentation of gaseous toluene (C7H8) in the focus of an 80 fs Ti:sapphire laser beam (λ = 800 nm) with a sufficiently small B-integral [Siegman, Lasers (University Science Books, Mill Valley, CA, 1986)]. The peak intensity was varied between 1.9x1013 and 2.8x1013Wcm-2, and both linear and circular polarization were used. Over the whole range of intensities studied, only the singly charged parent ion and its fragment, C7H7+, are found. Although the Keldysh adiabaticity parameter equals …

Pulse Radiolysis Of Liquid Water Using Picosecond Electron Pulses Produced By A Table-Top Terawatt Laser System, Ned Saleh, Kirk Flippo, Koshichi Nemoto, Donald P. Umstadter, Robert A. Crowell, Charles D. Jonah, Alexander D. Trifunac Jun 2000

Pulse Radiolysis Of Liquid Water Using Picosecond Electron Pulses Produced By A Table-Top Terawatt Laser System, Ned Saleh, Kirk Flippo, Koshichi Nemoto, Donald P. Umstadter, Robert A. Crowell, Charles D. Jonah, Alexander D. Trifunac

Donald Umstadter Publications

A laser based electron generator is shown, for the first time, to produce sufficient charge to conduct time resolved investigations of radiation induced chemical events. Electron pulses generated by focussing terawatt laser pulses into a supersonic helium gas jet are used to ionize liquid water. The decay of the hydrated electrons produced by the ionizing electron pulses is monitored with 0.3 µs time resolution. Hydrated electron concentrations as high as 22 µM were generated. The results show that terawatt lasers offer both an alternative to linear accelerators and a means to achieve subpicosecond time resolution for pulse radiolysis studies.

Gaussian Beams In Hollow Metal Waveguides, Lee W. Casperson Jun 2000

Gaussian Beams In Hollow Metal Waveguides, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Various families of Gaussian beams have been explored previously to represent the propagation of nearly plane electromagnetic waves in media having at most quadratic transverse variations of the index of refraction and the gain or loss in the vicinity of the beam. However, such beams cannot directly represent the wave solutions for propagation in planar or rectangular waveguides, and sinusoidal mode functions are more commonly used for such waveguides. On the other hand, it is also useful to consider the possibility of recurring Gaussian beams that have an approximately Gaussian transverse profile at certain distinct planes along the propagation path. …
