Signal Modeling With Non-Uniform Time Sampling Of Features For Automatic Speech Recognition, Montri Karnjanadecha Jul 2000

Signal Modeling With Non-Uniform Time Sampling Of Features For Automatic Speech Recognition, Montri Karnjanadecha

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation presents an investigation of non-uniform time sampling methods for spectral/temporal feature extraction in speech. Frame-based features were computed based on an encoding of the global spectral shape using a Discrete Cosine Transform. In most current “standard” methods, trajectory (dynamic) features are determined from frame-based parameters using a fixed time sampling, i.e., fixed block length and fixed block spacing. In this research, new methods are proposed and investigated in which block length and/or block spacing are variable. The idea was initially tested with HMM-based isolated word recognition, and a significant performance improvement resulted when a variable block length and …

An Improved Statcom Model For Power Flow Analysis, Zhiping Yang, Chen Shen, Lingli Zhang, Mariesa Crow Jul 2000

An Improved Statcom Model For Power Flow Analysis, Zhiping Yang, Chen Shen, Lingli Zhang, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The StatCom is traditionally modeled for power flow analysis as a PV or PQ bus depending on its primary application. The active power is either set to zero (neglecting the StatCom losses) or calculated iteratively. The StatCom voltage and reactive power compensation are usually related through the magnetics of the StatCom. This traditional power flow model of the StatCom neglects the impact of the high-frequency effects and the switching characteristics of the power electronics on the active power losses and the reactive power injection (absorption). In this paper, the authors propose a new StatCom model appropriate for power flow analysis …

Conservation Conundrum, Robert L. Brownell Jr., Barbara E. Curry, Peter Daszak, Andrew A. Cunningham, Alex D. Hyatt Jun 2000

Conservation Conundrum, Robert L. Brownell Jr., Barbara E. Curry, Peter Daszak, Andrew A. Cunningham, Alex D. Hyatt

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

P. Daszak, A. A. Cunningham, and A. D. Hyatt present a convincing argument in their Review "Emerging infectious diseases of wildlife-threats to biodiversity and human health" (Science's Compass, 21 Jan., p. 443) that emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) pose a risk to wildlife, and they suggest that EIDs most often result from a change in the ecology of the pathogen or the host (or both). A situation they did not mention is that in some cases, the protection of threatened species can increase the risk of an EID outbreak by allowing a close association between wildlife and domestic animals where one …

Digestibility, Nitrogen Excretion, And Mean Retention Time By North American Porcupines (Erethizon Dorsatum) Consuming Natural Forages, Laura A. Felicetti, Lisa A. Shipley, Gary W. Witmer, Charles T. Robbins Jun 2000

Digestibility, Nitrogen Excretion, And Mean Retention Time By North American Porcupines (Erethizon Dorsatum) Consuming Natural Forages, Laura A. Felicetti, Lisa A. Shipley, Gary W. Witmer, Charles T. Robbins

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

North American porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) subsist predominantly on low-protein, high-fiber, high-tannin diets. Therefore, we measured the porcupine's ability to digest dry matter, fiber, and protein by conducting digestion trials on eight natural forages and one pelleted ration varying in concentration of fiber, nitrogen, and tannins. On these diets, dry matter intake ranged from 5 to 234 g/kg 0.75/d and dry matter digestibility ranged from 62% to 96%. Porcupines digested highly lignified fiber better than many large hindgut fermenters and ruminants. The porcupine's ability to digest fiber may be explained, in part, by their lengthy mean retention time …

Money Demand, Financial Distress, And Exchange-Rate Uncertainty In Indonesia, Paul D. Mc Nelis Jun 2000

Money Demand, Financial Distress, And Exchange-Rate Uncertainty In Indonesia, Paul D. Mc Nelis

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This paper examines the demand for currency and quasi-money in Indonesia with linear and neural network models. The goal is to predict better the recent financial distress, reflected by the flight into currency and decline of quasi-money.The results show that neural network approaches, much more than linear models, are capable of accurate out-of-sample predictions for both monetary aggregates. However, for the very turbulent period of November and December of 1997, even the neural network models show large out-of-sample forecast errors. When a proxy for exchange-rate uncertainty supplements the network models, the out-of-sample currency demand becomes quite accurate, even for the …

Peter Dowben Publications

We present evidence for a change in electron - phonon coupling across a bulk phase transition. Below the lattice stiffening transition at around 160 K, there is a change in the diffracted peak width observed by neutron and X-ray scattering techniques. Also, the electronic band structure of the copolymer is shifting in binding energy below 160 K, decreasing the density of states near the Fermi level. The value of the effective Debye temperature above the transition temperature is approximately 50 K, while below 160 K, the value of the Debye parameter is 245 K. We postulate that the coupling between …

The Effects Of A Pen Pal Program On Attitude Toward Letter Writing In Fourth Grade Students, Lisa Fisher

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted with a group of fourth grade elementary school students in a rural area of southern New Jersey to determine whether engaging in a pen pal program would affect their attitudes toward letter writing, as determined by the scores on a writing questionnaire. The sample was a group of 50 students, consisting of 28 boys and 22 girls, of which 14 percent were black and 86 percent were white. The experimental group exchanged letters with pen pals for a period of eight weeks, while the control group did not. Language instruction for both groups remained the same. …

Bit Allocation Considering Mean Absolute Error For Image Compression, Hemen Goswami, Samuel Peter Kozaitis Jun 2000

Bit Allocation Considering Mean Absolute Error For Image Compression, Hemen Goswami, Samuel Peter Kozaitis

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

In lossy image compression schemes, often some distortion measure is minimized to arrive at a desired target bit rate. The distortion measure that has been most studied is the mean-squared-error (MSE). However, perceptual quality often does not agree with the notion of minimization of mean square error1 . Since MSE can not guarantee the optimality of perceptual quality, others error measures have been investigated. Others have found strong mathematical and practical perspective to choose a different error measure other than MSE, especially for image compression2. In Ref. 2 it is argued that the mean absolute error (MAE) measure is a …

Essentials Of K-Essence, Christian Armendariz-Picon, V. Mukhanov, Paul J. Steinhardt Jun 2000

Essentials Of K-Essence, Christian Armendariz-Picon, V. Mukhanov, Paul J. Steinhardt

Physics - All Scholarship

We recently introduced the concept of "k-essence" as a dynamical solution for explaining naturally why the universe has entered an epoch of accelerated expansion at a late stage of its evolution. The solution avoids fine-tuning of parameters and anthropic arguments. Instead, k-essence is based on the idea of a dynamical attractor solution which causes it to act as a cosmological constant only at the onset of matter-domination. Consequently, k-essence overtakes the matter density and induces cosmic acceleration at about the present epoch. In this paper, we present the basic theory of k-essence and dynamical attractors based on evolving scalar fields …

Solvability Of A Parabolic Boundary Value Problem With Internal Jump Condition, Kurt M. Bryan, Lester Caudill Jun 2000

Solvability Of A Parabolic Boundary Value Problem With Internal Jump Condition, Kurt M. Bryan, Lester Caudill

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

We examine a model for the propagation of heat through a one-dimensional object with an interior ''flaw". The flaw is modeled as a nonlinear relationship between the flux and temperature jump at an interior point of the object. Under realistic hypotheses, the resulting nonlinear initial boundary value problem is shown to have a unique and suitably smooth solution.

The Primordial Helium Abundance: Toward Understanding And Removing The Cosmic Scatter In The Dy/Dz Relation, D. R. Ballantyne, Gary J. Ferland, P. G. Martin Jun 2000

The Primordial Helium Abundance: Toward Understanding And Removing The Cosmic Scatter In The Dy/Dz Relation, D. R. Ballantyne, Gary J. Ferland, P. G. Martin

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present results from photoionization models of low-metallicity H II regions. These nebulae form the basis for measuring the primordial helium abundance. Our models show that the helium ionization correction factor (ICF) can be nonnegligible for nebulae excited by stars with effective temperatures larger than 40,000 K. Furthermore, we find that when the effective temperature rises to above 45,000 K, the ICF can be significantly negative. This result is independent of the choice of stellar atmosphere. However, if an H II region has an [O III] λ5007/[O I] λ6300 ratio greater than 300, then our models show that, regardless of …
