Search For A W′ Boson Via The Decay Mode W′→Μν Μ In 1.8 Tev Pp̅ Collisions, F. Abe, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report the results of a search for a W′ boson produced in pp̅ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV using a 107 pb-1 data sample recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We consider the decay channel W′→ μνμ and search for anomalous production of high transverse mass μνμ lepton pairs. We observe no excess of events above background and set limits on the rate of W′ boson production and decay relative to standard model W boson production and decay using a fit of the transverse mass distribution observed. If we assume standard …

A Story Problem: How To Teach Mathematics Methods In An Undergraduate Teacher Education Program., Barbara Dian O'Donnell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study is to develop and describe a mathematics methods course which aims to help students internalize instructional approaches which advance the ideals set forth by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). In this action research study, preservice teachers in two sections of a uniquely configured mathematics methods courses grapple with learning to plan, teach, and use instructional strategies which are based on the NCTM Standards. The results of this phenomenological study of three cases demonstrate that preservice teachers internalize instructional practices when they learn the future role they will assume in the classroom …

Search For Scalar Top And Scalar Bottom Quarks In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration Jun 2000

Search For Scalar Top And Scalar Bottom Quarks In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We have searched for direct pair production of scalar top and scalar bottom quarks in 88 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV with the CDF detector. We looked for events with a pair of heavy flavor jets and missing energy, consistent with scalar top (bottom) quark decays to a charm (bottom) quark and a neutralino. The numbers of events that pass our selections show no significant deviation from standard model expectations. We compare our results to the next-to-leading order scalar quark production cross sections to exclude regions in scalar quark-neutralino mass parameter space.

Electronic Structure Of Bas And Boride Iii-V Alloys, Gus L. W. Hart, Alex Zunger Jun 2000

Electronic Structure Of Bas And Boride Iii-V Alloys, Gus L. W. Hart, Alex Zunger

Faculty Publications

Boron arsenide, the typically ignored member of the Group-III–V arsenide series BAs-AlAs-GaAs-InAs is found to resemble silicon electronically: its Γ conduction-band minimum is p-like (Γ15), not s-like (Γ1c), it has an X1c-like indirect band gap, and its bond charge is distributed almost equally on the two atoms in the unit cell, exhibiting nearly perfect covalency. The reasons for these are tracked down to the anomalously low atomic p orbital energy in the boron and to the unusually strong s–s repulsion in BAs relative to most other Group-III–V compounds. We find unexpected valence-band offsets of BAs with respect to GaAs and …

The Complexity Of Planning With Partially-Observable Markov Decision Processes, Martin Mundhenk Jun 2000

The Complexity Of Planning With Partially-Observable Markov Decision Processes, Martin Mundhenk

Computer Science Technical Reports

This work surveys results on the complexity of planning under uncertainty. The planning model considered is the partially-observable Markov decision process. The general planning problems are, given such a process, (a) to calculate its performance under a given control policy, (b) to find an optimal or approximate optimal control policy, and (c) to decide whether a good policy exists. The complexity of this and related problems depend on a variety of factors, including the observability of the process state, the compactness of the process representation, the type of policy, or even the number of actions relative to the number of …

Lightness Dependencies And The Effect Of Texture On Suprathreshold Lightness Tolerances, Ethan D. Montag, Roy S. Berns Jun 2000

Lightness Dependencies And The Effect Of Texture On Suprathreshold Lightness Tolerances, Ethan D. Montag, Roy S. Berns

Articles

A psychophysical experiment was performed to determine the effects of lightness dependency on suprathreshold lightness tolerances. Using a pass/fail method of constant stimuli, lightness tolerance thresholds were measured using achromatic stimuli centered at CIELAB L* = 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 90 using 44 observers. In addition to measuring tolerance thresholds for uniform samples, lightness tolerances were measured using stimuli with a simulated texture of thread wound on a card. A texture intermediate between the wound thread and the uniform stimuli was also used. A computer-controlled CRT was used to perform the experiments. Lightness tolerances were found to increase …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study, the concept of fuzzy mathematics was applied to the damage evaluation of existing reinforced concrete (RC) bridges. The partition rule of evaluation grade was used to divide the evaluation results. The damage state of existing RC bridges was carried out using a double layer fuzzy synthesis evaluation. Moreover, based on the results of the synthesis evaluation, the damage state of existing RC bridges was thoroughly partitioned. According to the evaluation results, the double-layer synthesis evaluation of fuzzy for the damage of RC bridge is definitely useful. The evaluation results are also offered as the basis for strategy …

Effect Of Aggregate Volume Fraction On The Elastic Moduli And Void Ratio Of Cement-Based, Shih-Wei Cho, Chung-Chia Yang, Ran Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The effects of aggregate volume fraction on the void ratio and the elastic modulus of mortar were studied. Cylindrical specimens with six volume fractions (a/t = 0., 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4) of fine aggregate and various water/cement ratios (w/c = 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5) were cast and tested. Double inclusion model for three-phase composite (matrix, aggregate, and void) was used to predict the volume of total void based on the properties and quantities of the components and composites. Based on this study, when higher volume fraction of aggregate is used in the mix, the elastic modulus of the …

Low-Impact Development:An Innovative Alternative Approach To Stormwater Management, Chao-Hsien Liaw, Mow-Soung Cheng, Yao-Lung Tsai

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

To assist local governments in their efforts to develop more effective stormwater management programs, an innovative comprehensive approach to stormwater management referred to as Low-Impact Development (LID) has been developed. Low-Impact Development technology employs microscale and distributed management techniques. This paper briefly outlines the development of LID technology and discusses its basic hydrological control principles. However, LID's source control techniques are an economical common sense approach that can be used to better manage new development or retrofit existing development. We believe that this new approach is a significant step forward towards advancing the state-of-the-art of stormwater management and will be …

On The Free Terms Of The Dual Ben For The Two And Three-Dimensional Laplace Problems, Jeng-Tzong Chen, Shyh-Rong Kuo, Wei-Chih Chen, Li-Wei Liu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A dual integral formulation for the Laplace problem with a smooth boundary is derived by using the contour approach surrounding the singularity. It is found that using the contour approach the jump terms come half and half from the free terms in the L and M kernel integrations for the two-dimensional case, which is different from the limiting process by approaching an interior point to a boundary point where the jump terms come totally from the L kernel only. The definition of the Hadamard principal value for hypersingular integral at the collocation point of a smooth boundary is extended to …

Dartmouth Scholarship

The optical light curve of the energetic γ-ray burst GRB 991216 is consistent with jetlike behavior in which a power-law decay steepens from t-1.22+-0.04 at early times to t-1.53 +- 0.05 in a gradual transition at around 2 days. The derivation of the late-time decay slope takes into account the constant contribution of a host or intervening galaxy, which was measured 110 days after the event at R = 24.56 +- 0.14, although the light curve deviates from a single power law whether or not a constant term is included. The early-time spectral energy distribution of the afterglow …

Women Succeeding In The Sciences: Theories And Practices Across Disciplines, Jody Bart Jun 2000

Women Succeeding In The Sciences: Theories And Practices Across Disciplines, Jody Bart

Purdue University Press Books

Ample evidence has been provided that women historically have suffered numerous social, political, and institutional barriers to their entrance and success in the sciences. The articles in this anthology refocus the discussion and reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the issues surrounding women in the sciences. While the barriers that women have faced as researchers, subjects of research, students of science, and theorists have been well documented, this anthology breaks new ground. It presents the ways women succeed in the sciences, overcome these historical barriers, and contribute to the social practice of science and the philosophy of science in both theory …

State-Selective Cross Section Scalings For Electron Capture Collisions, K. R. Cornelius, K. Wojtkowski, Ronald E. Olson Jun 2000

State-Selective Cross Section Scalings For Electron Capture Collisions, K. R. Cornelius, K. Wojtkowski, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The classical-trajectory Monte Carlo method is used to calculate total and final nf state-selective electron capture cross sections for various fully stripped ions, ranging from He2+ to Ne10+, incident on H(ni = 1-4) and Li(2s and 2p) targets over the collision energies of 1-100 keV u-1. Theoretical derivations of two scaling laws for state-selective electron capture cross sections as a function of collision energy, initial and final bound electron states and projectile charge are presented. The new scaling rules reduce the state-selective capture cross sections to very distinct universal curves. Curve fits …

Single Ionization Of Ne By Intense Laser Fields, C. R. Feeler, Ronald E. Olson Jun 2000

Single Ionization Of Ne By Intense Laser Fields, C. R. Feeler, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A three-dimensional classical Monte Carlo method has been used to examine the final state electron dynamics after single ionization of neon in an electric field generated by a short-pulse high-intensity laser. Linearly and circularly polarized fields were studied. Intensities ranging from 3 x 1014 to 3 x 1015 W cm-2 were used with a wavelength of 800 nm and a full-width at half-maximum of 30 fs. At these values, the Keldysh parameter is less than one, making the classical approximation valid. A potential determined by Hartree-Fock calculations has been used to model the Ne atom. A kinematically complete picture …
