“Mi Les Long Yupela Usim Flag Bilong Mi”:* Symbols And Identity In Papua New Guinea, Andrew J. Strathern, Pamela J. Stewart
Pacific Studies
In Papua New Guinea there is a constant interplay between senses of national identity and senses of local identity that is of particular relevance to debates in the contemporary Pacific. In the domain of symbols of identity there is also a two-way appropriation from the local to the national and from the national to the local. We argue that the latter process works most strongly and thereby modifies the process of creation of an overall national sense of identity. The incorporation of the national into the local in turn influences the process of the production of locality itself. Contemporary issues …

Language And Culture In African Postcolonial Literature, Kwaku Asante-Darko
Language And Culture In African Postcolonial Literature, Kwaku Asante-Darko
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, "Language and Culture in African Postcolonial Literature," Kwaku Asante-Darko offers both conceptual basis and empirical evidence in support of the fact that critical issues concerning protest, authenticity, and hybridity in African post-colonial literature have often been heavily laden with nationalist and leftist ideological encumbrances, which tended to advocate the rejection of Western standards of aesthetics. One of the literary ramifications of nationalist/anti-colonial mobilization was a racially based aesthetics which saw even the new product of literary hybridity born of cultural exchange as a mark of Western imposition and servile imitation by Africa in their literary endeavour. Asante-Darko …
Cultural Politics, Rhetoric, And The Essay: A Comparison Of Emerson And Rodó, Sophia Mcclennen
Cultural Politics, Rhetoric, And The Essay: A Comparison Of Emerson And Rodó, Sophia Mcclennen
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article, "Cultural Politics, Rhetoric, and the Essay: A Comparison of Emerson and Rodó," Sophia McClennen compares two essays which have been central to debates over "American" cultural identity. Her work is a detailed comparison of the persuasive language used in "The American Scholar" by Ralph Waldo Emerson and "Ariel" by José Enrique Rodó. She focuses on the specific ways that the rhetoric of the persuasive essay binds Emerson and Rodó to a literary tradition and consequently impedes each author's ability to construct a liberated culture. She also demonstrates how the comparative method is a useful tool for analyzing …
Opening The Doors Of Communication And Guiding Parents Into Classrooms And Schools, Katy Anne Forsyth
Opening The Doors Of Communication And Guiding Parents Into Classrooms And Schools, Katy Anne Forsyth
Honors Theses
"A good parent is a national treasure and we need to make parents and families partners with their children's teacher and principals in the process of education," (Beyond the Classroom 308). This quote is the heart behind the contents of this book. For the love and concern that we as teachers have for the children in our lives, we owe it to them to help make their educational experience the most well rounded prosperous experience possible. To accomplish this, a partnership needs to be created by opening the doors of communication and guiding parents into classrooms and schools. As teachers, …

Drazen Erdemovic. The name may be unfamiliar to many outside the former Yugoslavia. The name will surely be unknown by most people outside the international community and those committed to the universal protection of human rights through criminal prosecution. Drazen Erdemovic is a confessed killer. Drazen Erdemovic has confessed to killing somewhere between seventy and one hundred unarmed Muslims in a mass execution as a member of the Bosnian Serb army in July 1995. In this regard, he is the first convicted defendant to stem from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) established by the United Nations …

Rethinking The Concept Of "Minority": A Task For Social Scientists And Practitioners, Doris Wilkinson
Rethinking The Concept Of "Minority": A Task For Social Scientists And Practitioners, Doris Wilkinson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Although sociologists have articulated the components and scope of the "minority" concept, many of the characteristics are no longer germane. Originally those placed in the category were viewed as subordinate and as possessing cultural or physical qualities not approved or preferred by the larger population. There has been no systematic questioning of ingrained seductive words and value-based constructions like "minority". This brief critique offers an evaluation of the "minority" conception that is so pervasive in the social and behavioral sciences, the print and broadcast media, politics, and the entire language system.
A Comparative Discussion Of The Notion Of 'Validity' In Qualitative And Quantitative Research, Glyn Winter
A Comparative Discussion Of The Notion Of 'Validity' In Qualitative And Quantitative Research, Glyn Winter
The Qualitative Report
The issues surrounding the use and nature of the term 'validity' in qualitative research are controversial and many. In this paper, the author attempts to establish that 'validity' is not a single, fixed or universal concept, but rather a contingent construct, inescapably grounded in the processes and intentions of particular research methodologies and projects. The first section of this work deals with the problems faced in defining 'validity' in both quantitative and qualitative research methods and will briefly review other authors' attempts to categorise it. The work will then proceed to distinguish and compare the claims to 'validity' made by …

The Correspondence Of Benjamin Frankiin And His Grandson B. F. Bache, Karen C. Duval
The Correspondence Of Benjamin Frankiin And His Grandson B. F. Bache, Karen C. Duval
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
When Benjamin Franklin left Philadelphia for France in October 1776, he took along his sixteen-year-old grandson, William Temple Franklin, who would remain in Paris, serving as his secretary, for the entire eight-and-a-half-year mission. Also in tow was another grandson and Temple's cousin, Benjamin Franklin Bache. Benny, as he was usually called, was born in August 1769. No letters survive to indicate why Benny, who had just turned seven, was being sent abroad. His departure, following the death of his sister Sarah at eight and a half months, must have been an emotional one. But high aspirations for the young boy's …

A Method Of Focusing The Attention Of The Decision-Maker On Uncertain Information, John F. Moesner Iv
A Method Of Focusing The Attention Of The Decision-Maker On Uncertain Information, John F. Moesner Iv
Theses and Dissertations
Military decision-makers need to be able to synthesize large amounts of information quickly and make accurate and timely decisions. However, all too often, when a decision-maker is bombarded with important information that has an uncertainty associated with it, that information is often neglected. One method of dealing with this type of information overload is through proper data orientation. By reducing the clutter of irrelevant information, the proportions of useful and relevant data can be increased. At the same time, the attention of the decision-maker is directed to the critical tasks or centers of gravity. The WATCHDOG Decision Support Tool is …
Knowledge Base Support For Design And Synthesis Of Multi-Agent Systems, Marc J. Raphael
Knowledge Base Support For Design And Synthesis Of Multi-Agent Systems, Marc J. Raphael
Theses and Dissertations
AgentTool is an AFIT-produced, AFOSR-sponsored multi-agent system (MAS) development tool intended for production of MASs that meet military requirements. This research focuses on enabling MAS design and synthesis tools like agentTool to store, retrieve, and filter persistent, reusable, and reliable agent domain knowledge. This "enabling" is vital if such tools are expected to produce consistent, maintainable, and verifiable agent applications on short timetables. Enabling requires: 1) modeling the agent knowledge domain, 2) designing and employing a persistent knowledge base, and 3) bridging that domain model to the knowledge base with an extensible domain interchange grammar. The achieved interchange grammar, called …
Improving The Analyst And Decision-Maker’S Perspective Through Uncertainty Visualization, Evan T. Watkins
Improving The Analyst And Decision-Maker’S Perspective Through Uncertainty Visualization, Evan T. Watkins
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis constructs the Taxonomy of Uncertainty and an approach for enhancing the information in decision support systems. The hierarchical categorization of numerous causes for uncertainty defines the taxonomy, which fostered the development of a technique for visualizing uncertainty. This technique is fundamental to expressing the multi-dimensional uncertainty that can be associated with any object. By including and intuitively expressing uncertainty, the approach facilitates and enhances intuition and decision-making without undue information overload. The resulting approach for enhancing the information involves recording uncertainty, identifying the relevant items, computing and visualizing uncertainty, and providing interaction with the selection of uncertainty. A …

Similarity Based Approximate Reasoning., Swapan Raha Dr.
Similarity Based Approximate Reasoning., Swapan Raha Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Many years of research in Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Science and allied area reveal that the cognitive process of human reasoning deals with imprecise premises. As cognitive process of human reasoning is mainly concerned with the individual's perception, it is liable to be imprecise in nature. Precise traditional two-valued logic and/or multi-valued logics are not effective in handling such reasoning processes. This motivated Zadeh (109) to investigate how these impreciseness in human rea- soning could be modeled through some computable entities. In this regard, Zadeh has shown how such imprecise linguistic terms could be expressed through fuzzy sets over universes of …
