The Teacher's Impact Upon Building A Classroom Community, Diane Walker

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study looks at the teacher's role and impact on building a classroom community. A heterogeneous mix of 20 second grade students (ages 7 and 8) in a self contained classroom were videotaped daily having a fruit snack. A Qualitative method of research was applied to the data. Survey Of Support For And Opposition To English Only Legislation In The Greater Portland Region, Leah Ann Woodruff Feb 2000

Survey Of Support For And Opposition To English Only Legislation In The Greater Portland Region, Leah Ann Woodruff

Dissertations and Theses

The politics of language is something that all ESL instructors will deal with at some point in their careers. The English Only Movement is an important part of the current trend in language legislation. As ESL instructors we need to understand what motivates people in our communities to support or oppose such legislation, so that we can better prepare our students to operate in that community. Many articles have been written on the English Only Movement, but the vast majority of them are from a historical or politically partisan view. Little research has been done in regard to why this …

Letter Spirals, Michael Keith Feb 2000

Letter Spirals, Michael Keith

Word Ways

This recreation was inspired by the famous mathematical discovery of S. Ulam: if the numbers 1,2,3,4... are arranged in a spiral on a square grid, unexpected diagonal patterns appear when one looks at the prime numbers. What happens, I wondered, if we do a similar thing with the alphabet, or other sequences of letters, and look for words instead of numbers?

Miami Words, Susan Thorpe Feb 2000

Miami Words, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

In February 1970, Kickshaws editor David Silverman challenged the readers of Word Ways to find words such as ONION in which the letters preceding and succeeding a single core letter (in this case, the letter I) are the same. These were christened Heads 'n' Trails words by John Ferguson of Maryland. Silverman's idea was to find 26 of these words, each one having a different core letter. The exercise was dully completed, largely by Josepha Byrne in the May 1970 issue and Murray Pearce in the August 1971 one, using words of various lengths including ADA, EDGED, HOTSHOT and OUTSPOUTS.
