Flogging A Dead Language: Reading, Sex, And The Freak Reader In Acker’S Don Quixote, Nicola Pitchford Jan 2000

Flogging A Dead Language: Reading, Sex, And The Freak Reader In Acker’S Don Quixote, Nicola Pitchford

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Pastiche is central to the resistant politics of Kathy Acker's writing--yet she would appear to agree with Fredric Jameson's influential critique of pastiche as "the wearing of a linguistic mask, speech in a dead language" (17). Her 1986 novel Don Quixote is all about having to speak "in a dead language" in the absence of a more "healthy" norm. It begins with the death of the protagonist, a female version of Cervantes's knight, who then goes on to narrate much of the subsequent story. Acker explains, "BEING DEAD, DON QUIXOTE COULD NO LONGER SPEAK. BEING BORN INTO AND PART OF …

Duplication In The L2 Spanish Produced By Quechua-Speaking Children: Transfer Of A Pragmatic Strategy, Ellen Courtney Jan 2000

Duplication In The L2 Spanish Produced By Quechua-Speaking Children: Transfer Of A Pragmatic Strategy, Ellen Courtney

Selected Works Temporary Series

Languages long in contact in the Andean countries, Quechua and Spanish are intriguing partners in bilingual speech because they exhibit very different word order patterns. In a study exploring the development of Spanish word order in Quechua-speaking children, Minaya & Luján (1982) reported that children frequently produced "hybrid" (S)VOV structures. They proposed that the children had a transitional grammar with a nonadult phrase structure rule. This study presents a vigorous challenge to this claim. First, both adult and child speakers of Quechua duplicate not only verbs, but a variety of constituent types, presumably for emphatic effect. Second, the Minaya & …

Precious Little Guidance: Jury Instruction On Damage Awards, Edith Greene, Brian H. Bornstein Jan 2000

Precious Little Guidance: Jury Instruction On Damage Awards, Edith Greene, Brian H. Bornstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Jury instructions on damage awards are notoriously vague and ambiguous. As a result, awards are sometimes unexpected and seemingly illogical. In this article, the authors argue that jury instructions regarding damages are vague because the law of damages itself is purposefully ambiguous—allowing particularized justice across a variety of different circumstances. The authors review research on comprehension and application of substantive jury instructions related to damages and on procedural variations at trial (e.g., use of preinstruction, bifurcation, blindfolding jurors to various issues, special verdict forms, caps on damages, and instruction revision) that impact the substantive instructions that jurors receive from the …

Discours Préfaciel Et Poétique Africaine, Andre-Patient Bokiba Jan 2000

Discours Préfaciel Et Poétique Africaine, Andre-Patient Bokiba

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The rather common use of a preface in African literature raises the question of the poetic value of such a practice. A preface written for the author by an older or recognized writer usually seeks to legitimate or consecrate that work. The author who writes his own preface, however, has other goals in mind and his preface is marked by a certain number of properties which, on a practical level, lend themselves to ambiguous interpretation. The present study is based on an analysis of some 100 introductory texts of all types. It concludes that, in writing his own preface, an …

Albert Cohen Et Les Enjeux De La Francophonie, Véronique Maisier Jan 2000

Albert Cohen Et Les Enjeux De La Francophonie, Véronique Maisier

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The Swiss writer Albert Cohen learned very early to consider French his native language as opposed to the Greco-Venetian dialect spoken by his parents. The dilemma arising from conflicting forces between his Eastern Judaic heritage and his success as a Western Francophone writer caused a great deal of inner turmoil which manifested itself in his writings. This article examines the author's struggles in choosing the French language and underlines the consequences of his decisions.

Examining Counseling Strategies For African American Adolescent Crack Abusers, Paula Reed Dorris Jan 2000

Examining Counseling Strategies For African American Adolescent Crack Abusers, Paula Reed Dorris

Graduate Research Papers

The author of this paper has addressed the significance of the development of treatment strategies to implement with African American adolescent crack addicts. An integral basis for tailoring culturally specific treatment approaches for African American adolescents relates to the unique circumstances, which may promote more extensive crack abuse by this group. Depression was the difficulty which the author chose to focus upon. Several different methods of helping these adolescents are discussed. The intervention strategies which show promise in helping African American adolescent crack addicts include: (a) Interpersonal Therapy; (b) psycho-educational programs; (c) involvement of family members in treatment; (d) use …

Grand-Duché De Luxembourg: Les Raisons Et Les Modes D'Une Pratique Francophone, Frank Wilhelm Jan 2000

Grand-Duché De Luxembourg: Les Raisons Et Les Modes D'Une Pratique Francophone, Frank Wilhelm

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Less well known because of its size, despite its political integration in the European Union, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is set apart by a practice of spoken French operating within the framework of a complex literary field marked by its national language, a dialect of Germanic origin. The first part of this article deals with socioeconomic and sociolinguistic aspects, relations with France, the teaching of French and questions that relate to writing. The second part details the specifics of a literary production in French that is amazingly varied.

Les Minorités Postcoloniales Face À La Francophonie, Alec C. Hargreaves Jan 2000

Les Minorités Postcoloniales Face À La Francophonie, Alec C. Hargreaves

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The migratory flows from the former colonial territories have encountered in France a settling process of non-native populations, a growing proportion of whom, born of immigrant parents, have obtained French nationality. Literature, film and music reveal that, with respect to Francophonie, the current situation of these frequently stigmatized minorities overturns the traditional categories and demarcation lines between French and Francophones.

Reduplication In Southern Paiute And Correspondence Theory, Naomi Gurevich Jan 2000

Reduplication In Southern Paiute And Correspondence Theory, Naomi Gurevich

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

In Southern Paiute, word initial w is realized as a labialized velar nasal intervocalically if it finds itself in such an environment upon morphological concatenation. McCarthy and Prince (1995) argue that a serial analysis of this alternation vis-à-vis reduplication leads to an ordering paradox, but an Optimality Theoretic analysis of the interaction between reduplication and the morphophonemic alternation in the language is able to account for the data. This analysis of Southern Paiute data, along with a handful of other examples in their work, is put forth by McCarthy and Prince as strong evidence in support of Correspondence Theory. I …

An Addendum To Harrington's Northern Salinan Place Names, Terry L. Jones, Betty Rivers, Andrea M. Maliarik, Terry L. Joslin, Douglas Alger Jan 2000

An Addendum To Harrington's Northern Salinan Place Names, Terry L. Jones, Betty Rivers, Andrea M. Maliarik, Terry L. Joslin, Douglas Alger

Social Sciences

Rivers and Jones (1993) reported the locations of 21 place names in the upper San Antonio Valley and adjacent coast of Monterey County, California, that were noted by Salinan speakers in John Peabody Harrington's field notes from 1922 to 1932. Surface reconnaissance and review of recently completed archaeological survey reports have led to the identification of 11 additional Salinan places in the upper San Antonio Valley and refinement in the location of three others. Archaeological sites in the vicinity of named places tentatively suggest that Salinan settlements are marked by clusters of small middens and bedrock mortars.

How Do We Keep Desire From Passing With Beauty?, Pamela L. Caughie Jan 2000

How Do We Keep Desire From Passing With Beauty?, Pamela L. Caughie

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

On the day of her party in June 1923, Clarissa Dalloway worries about her attraction to beauty in the face of a political and humanitarian crisis:

He [Richard] was already halfway to the House of Commons, to his Armenians, his Albanians, having settled her on the sofa, looking at his roses. And people would say, “Clarissa Dalloway is spoilt.” She cared much more for her roses than for the Armenians. Hunted out of existence, maimed, frozen, the victims of cruelty and injustice (she had heard Richard say so over and over again)—no, she could feel nothing for the Albanians, or …

Forms Of Address In The Popular Press: A Comparison Of Spain, Mexico And The United States, Laura Callahan Jan 2000

Forms Of Address In The Popular Press: A Comparison Of Spain, Mexico And The United States, Laura Callahan

Modern Languages & Literature

Address pronouns and their semantic implications have been the subject of numerous studies since Brown and Gilman (1960). Forms of address reflect relationships of asymmetry and symmetry, and advertisers' practices in regard to second-person pronoun usage hold interest for at least two reasons. First, they can serve as evidence for changes in speech community norms. Second, they can show how advertisers attempt to manipulate consumers through metaphoric appeals to the domains and contexts associated with each form of address. A comparison of forms of address in magazines and newspapers in Spain, Mexico, and the United States reveals certain correlations with …

Gender Problems: A Sociolinguistic Study Of The Grammatical Gender Problems That Face The Learners Of Arabic As A Second Language, Nohad Hemmoudeh Jan 2000

Gender Problems: A Sociolinguistic Study Of The Grammatical Gender Problems That Face The Learners Of Arabic As A Second Language, Nohad Hemmoudeh

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The aim of this sociolinguistic study is to examine the grammatical gender difficulties that non-Arabic speakers face when they learn Arabic as a second language (ASL) This work concentrates on English and French speakers and compares the errors each make while learning Arabic. The choice of these two languages resulted from two factors: (1) since the author is fluent in English and French, she conducted her research on speakers of both languages; (2) since both Arabic and French are considerably more marked morphologically than English, the researcher is interested in examining the type of errors made by the speakers of …

7. Discovering Our Voice: A Manual To Accompany 'Geraldo', Ann Margaret Sharp, Laurance J. Splitter Jan 2000

7. Discovering Our Voice: A Manual To Accompany 'Geraldo', Ann Margaret Sharp, Laurance J. Splitter

Later Elementary School Curriculum

Geraldo is a story about what an immigrant undergoes when he leaves one culture and tries to 'join' another culture. An immigrant suffers a triple disruption: he loses his sense of place, he enters into an alien language, and he finds himself surrounded by beings whose social behavior, norms and traditions are very unlike, and sometimes even offensive to his own. The explanation of the leading ideas in this manual help students and teachers explore the philosophical themes in Geraldo. The discussion plans, exercises, and activities are designed to foster and cultivate the process of philosophical dialogue in the classroom.

The Dead Sea Scrolls: Questions And Responses For Latter-Day Saints, Donald W. Parry, Stephen D. Ricks Jan 2000

The Dead Sea Scrolls: Questions And Responses For Latter-Day Saints, Donald W. Parry, Stephen D. Ricks

Maxwell Institute Publications

Since their initial discovery in 1947, the ancient scrolls found in caves near the Dead Sea have stirred public curiosity. For Latter-day Saints, whose scriptural tradition speaks of sacred records to come forth in the last days, the Dead Sea Scrolls naturally give rise to questions such as:

— Are there references to Christ or Christianity in the scrolls?

— Do the scrolls contain scripture missing from the Bible?

— Is the plan of salvation attested in the scrolls?

— Do the scrolls refer to Joseph Smith or other latter-day figures?

The Dead Sea Scrolls: Questions and Responses for Latter-day …

Punishment, Postgenocide: From Guilt To Shame To Civis In Rwanda, Mark A. Drumbl Jan 2000

Punishment, Postgenocide: From Guilt To Shame To Civis In Rwanda, Mark A. Drumbl

Scholarly Articles

Following the 1994 Rwandan genocide, national and international trials set out to encourage national reconciliation, promote peace, punish perpetrators, foster a culture of human rights, and effect justice. In this Article, Professor Mark Drumbl questions the ability of these trials to achieve these goals and suggests they may in fact aggravate ethnic identity politics, thereby threatening Rwanda's long-term stability. He argues that the highly interdependent yet dualist nature of Rwandan society, together with the widespread level of participation in and victimization by the genocide, create a situation where accountability for the violence and the deterrence of future violence can be …

Democratic Vistas For The Humanities, Richard J. Franke Jan 2000

Democratic Vistas For The Humanities, Richard J. Franke

Imagining America

Richard J. Franke, author, Cut from Whole Cloth, draws from his experience as founding chairman of the Chicago Humanities Festival and as CEO of John Nuveen and Company, to tackle the question, “How do we bring scholars and artists to a larger audience?” Stepping back, he also asks, “Why is it important to reach a larger audience?”

Franke argues here that the humanities can best train citizens to make the complex political, social, and moral decisions that constitute a healthy democracy. Not only are the humanities crucial to the political and social spheres, but also to the professional world where …

L'Universalisation Actantielle Dans La Trilogie Tellurique De Driss Chraïbi, Violeta Ma Baena Gallé

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

In addition to following a similar argumental strand, the three books at which this story is aimed (Une enquete au pays, La Mere du printemps and Naissance a l'aube) bring forward in a constant way a set of formal, structural and thematic repetitions which allow us to consider them a trilogy. This work will be based on a study of these different constants which induce us to be aware of the fact that the three novels operate as a trilogy, especially if we look at the structure of the character system. Unlike the position of some critics who are content …
