L'Universalisation Actantielle Dans La Trilogie Tellurique De Driss Chraïbi, Violeta Ma Baena Gallé Jan 2000

L'Universalisation Actantielle Dans La Trilogie Tellurique De Driss Chraïbi, Violeta Ma Baena Gallé

In addition to following a similar argumental strand, the three books at which this story is aimed (Une enquete au pays, La Mere du printemps and Naissance a l'aube) bring forward in a constant way a set of formal, structural and thematic repetitions which allow us to consider them a trilogy. This work will be based on a study of these different constants which induce us to be aware of the fact that the three novels operate as a trilogy, especially if we look at the structure of the character system. Unlike the position of some critics who are content …

L'Histoire Et La Perception Du Temps: La Non-Linéarité Chez Assia Djebar, Deborah Hess Jan 2000

L'Histoire Et La Perception Du Temps: La Non-Linéarité Chez Assia Djebar, Deborah Hess

In Algeria, conflicts between Western and Arab-Muslim models have led to symbolically non-linear structures recalling mathematical and scientific principles. Assia Djebar seeks possible explanations for the violence of the nineties in the repression of certain political events that occurred during the struggle for independence. The gaps in the historical memory parallel Le Blanc de l'Algerie's fragmented a-chronological text.

The literary works by so-called Beur writers have gained little recognition in most critical studies. It is as if these works have been confined to the space which produced them, the suburbs, symbol of marginality and illegitimacy. The present article proposes a new concept, «litterature naturelle», in an effort to define Beur literature as well as other writings presenting similar characteristics.

The short story is very much alive in Haitian literature, most especially among women writers. As a favorite genre for describing insecurity on the sociocultural, political and identity level, it reflects the difficult circumstances in which short story writers labor and the obstacles that they encounter in finding a publisher, an audience, in a word, a place in the disporic field of Haitian literature. In particular, the short story genre allows for a formal, stylistic and structural hybridity that suits the writers' desire to experiment with narration even as they seek an appropriate voice.

(1993) in light

of their «Americanness» and their relations to the writings of the Afro- American writers Chester Himes and James Baldwin. The «Americanness»

of Laferriere's novels is apparent in the recurrence of typical American themes and characters and in the exploitation of proper nouns, myths and cliches that are specific to North America. Although Chester Himes' popular fiction appears to influence some of the stylistic and …

The recently evolved notion of Arab-Francophonie refers to the geolinguistic, geopolitical synergy between the French-speaking communities in the North and the Arabic-speaking communities in the Maghreb and Machrek. In fact this synergy involves an uneven exchange in which French dominates. The French language, however, is facing its own challenge from globalization and information superhighways, where English overwhelmingly prevails. What are the implications of this struggle for Francophonie, in the North as well as the South?

Experiences Of Japanese War Brides And Assimilation Into Appalachia: Understanding The Intersection Of Ethnicity And Gender, Kyoko Kondo

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This qualitative study analyzes the acculturation and assimilation of Japanese war brides into Appalachia. Although the Japanese female immigrants have lived in Appalachia for many years, their life experiences have been ignored by academia in Appalachian studies. A purpose of this study is to advance the understanding what social mechanisms impact the assimilation of the Japanese war brides and what it means for them to live in this society. By using oral history with open-ended questions, data is gathered from in-depth interviews with four Japanese war brides. The study finds retention of ethnic identity, recovery of cultural heritage, and social …

Grice's Implicature And Toulmin's Warrants: Their Arresting Similarities And The Resulting Implications For The Understanding Of Meaning In Communication, Caroline Paige Krejci Jan 2000

Grice's Implicature And Toulmin's Warrants: Their Arresting Similarities And The Resulting Implications For The Understanding Of Meaning In Communication, Caroline Paige Krejci

Theses Digitization Project

Paul Grice's conversational implicature is a widely studied and commonly accepted theory in the field of linguistics, and Stephen Toulmin's model of argument is perhaps even more widely studied and accepted in the field of argument. I was struck by the great similarities between the two theories, particularly the leap of logic both are dependent upon, and surprised by the fact that it didn't seem that anyone had explored the similarities. In this thesis, I explore the similarities of the processes, of Grices's implicature and Toulmin's model of argument, and how looking at the two together increases the understanding of …

"On Horror's Head Horrors Accumulate": A Reflective Comment On Capital Child Rape Legislation, J. Richard Broughton Jan 2000

"On Horror's Head Horrors Accumulate": A Reflective Comment On Capital Child Rape Legislation, J. Richard Broughton

Duquesne Law Review

The constitutionality of imposing capital punishment for the crime of child rape remains an open question. The author asserts that state capital child rape statutes are constitutional. The author bases his conclusion on the United States Supreme Court's capital punishment decisions, the historical treatment of sex offenses and non-homicide capital crimes, and the brutality of rape, itself. Finally, the author urges caution to ensure that capital punishment is not meted out in a racially discriminatory manner.

The Approaching Death Of The Collective Right Theory Of The Second Amendment, Roger I. Roots Jan 2000

The Approaching Death Of The Collective Right Theory Of The Second Amendment, Roger I. Roots

Duquesne Law Review

The notion that the Second Amendment right to bear arms is a collective rather than an individual right has persisted even though it has been buried by scholarly criticism. The author predicts that the collective right theory will finally collapse under the pressure of this scholarly criticism and the historical evidence that such a theory was not contemplated by the Founders when the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were created. According to the author, the federal district court decision in United States v. Emerson may be the impetus for this impending demise.

The Racialization Of Sexuality: The Queer Case Of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ian Barnard Jan 2000

The Racialization Of Sexuality: The Queer Case Of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"In this article I read media and subcultural representations of Jeffrey Dahmer, the white male U.S. serial killer who gained notoriety in the late 1980s for having sex with and then murdering and dismembering men of color in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My aim is to show the extent to which the degree of Dahmer's homosexualization in a particular representation determines Dahmer' s thinking and actions in the sphere of race, and to suggest how spiraling efforts to separate race from sexuality in the Dahmer case only further intricate the two analytic axes."

Perceived Risk Of Aids Among Prisoners Following Educational Intervention, Angela D. Crews, Randy Martin Jan 2000

Perceived Risk Of Aids Among Prisoners Following Educational Intervention, Angela D. Crews, Randy Martin

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

A pre/post quasi-experimental design was used to assess the impact of one state's AIDS education program on male (N = 75) and female (N= 65) inmates' perceived risk of HIV infection on the street and in prison. Post-test only comparison groups of male and female inmates were evaluated to control for the threat of testing. T-tests for paired samples were used to determine whether any significant changes occurred within groups (male & female), and t-tests for independent samples were used between groups to determine whether males or females experienced the greatest magnitude of change. Multiple regression analyses explored the …

Teaching Composition As A Social Process, Bruce Mccomiskey Jan 2000

Teaching Composition As A Social Process, Bruce Mccomiskey

All USU Press Publications

Bruce McComiskey is a strong advocate of social approaches to teaching writing. However, he opposes composition teaching that relies on cultural theory for content, because it too often prejudges the ethical character of institutions and reverts unnecessarily to product-centered practices in the classroom. He opposes what he calls the "read-this-essay-and-do-what-the-author-did method of writing instruction: read Roland Barthes's essay 'Toys' and write a similar essay; read John Fiske's essay on TV and critique a show." McComiskey argues for teaching writing as situated in discourse itself, in the constant flow of texts produced within social relationships and institutions. He urges writing teachers …

Malagasy Clause Structure, Ileana M. Paul Jan 2000

Malagasy Clause Structure, Ileana M. Paul

French Studies Publications

This thesis explores the nature of voice in Malagasy, a language spoken in Madagascar. In chapter 2, it is claimed that different passives promote arguments from different structural positions. Evidence is provided for a particular position, [Spec, v2P], where a certain class of elements (“displaced themes”) may be generated. One particular passive, the aprefix, promotes to subject elements in this position. In chapter 3, arguments are presented in favour of a structural analysis of circumstantial topic (CT). CT morphology licenses all arguments of the verb. Due to a requirement that all clauses have a subject (the Extended Projection Principle), some …
