An Analysis Of Risk Factors Associated With High Rates Of Cesarean Births In Three Selected Northeast Tennessee Hospitals., Karen Stewart-Hall
An Analysis Of Risk Factors Associated With High Rates Of Cesarean Births In Three Selected Northeast Tennessee Hospitals., Karen Stewart-Hall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study consists of an analysis of hospital discharge data from three Northeast Tennessee hospitals to identify maternal demographic factors that may be linked to higher rates of cesarean sections in this region of Appalachia. Maternal age, race, insurance status, length of stay, and birth weight were evaluated to identify regional trends in the prevalence of these factors over a two-year period.
There were 1,678 (23.3%) singleton live births by cesarean section of which 7.6% were repeat cesarean section deliveries. Less than one percent of the 7,181 births were vaginal births after cesarean (VBAC) delivery. Overall, insurance and maternal age …

The Asia-Pacific In The U.S. National Security Calculus For A New Millennium, Andrew Scobell Dr., Larry M. Wortzel Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The authors of this monograph survey the challenges to U.S. national security that confront this diverse and dynamic region, highlighting the particularly volatile situation that continues on the Korean peninsula. Beyond continued U.S. attention to maintaining a robust military presence and steadfast U.S. alliances, they argue that the United States, without ignoring the key dimensions in the U.S. National Security Strategy of responding and preparing now, should give a greater emphasis to shaping the Asia-Pacific region. They contend that the time is ripe for the United States to launch a major shaping initiative to help ensure that the positive trends …

Proteolytic Enzymes In The Marine Bacterium Pseudoalteromonas Atlantica: Post-Secretional Activation And Effects Of Environmental Conditions, Monica Hoffman, Alan W. Decho
Faculty Publications
Production and activities of cellular and extracellular proteolytic enzymes associated with the marine bacterium Pseudoalteromonas atlantica were examined in response to physiological state and changing environmental variables under laboratory conditions. Enzymes evidenced by zymography were metalloproteases, as defined by substrate preference and susceptibility to inhibitors (EDTA and 1, 10-phenanthroline). Distinct bands (i.e. molecular-weight [MW] size classes) of enzymes were isolated from within cellular and extracellular compartments. Susceptibility of extracellular enzymes to environmental stressors was related, in part, to the MW size classes of the enzymes. While all bands of enzymes showed some degree of inhibition when pH was decreased, the …
Effects Of Roadside Transect Width On Waterfowl And Wetland Estimates, Jane E. Austin, H. Thomas Sklebar, Glenn R. Guntenspergen, Thomas K. Buhl
Effects Of Roadside Transect Width On Waterfowl And Wetland Estimates, Jane E. Austin, H. Thomas Sklebar, Glenn R. Guntenspergen, Thomas K. Buhl
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Strip transects located along roads are commonly used to estimate waterfowl populations and characterize associated wetland habitat. We used data collected in May and early June, 1995, on forty-five 40-km2 plots in North Dakota to evaluate bias of 800-m and 400-m wide roadside transects for sampling wetlands relative to a larger (40-km2) scale and to compare duck abundance at the two widths. Densities of all basins combined and of seasonal basins considered alone were biased high for both transect widths, but mean bias did not differ from zero for temporary or semipermanent basins. Biases did not occur …

Rift Valley Fever, Sherine Shawky
Saudi Medical Journal
Rift Valley fever is a viral disease that affects domestic animals and humans. In humans, Rift Valley fever causes a flu-like disease but occasionally leads to high morbidity and mortality. The disease is generally known in the African continent. However, cases started to appear in Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The objective of this review is to give a general briefing about the epidemiology, ecology and management of the disease.
Antibiotic Resistance. An Impending Crisis, Manuel W. Mah, Ziad A. Memish
Antibiotic Resistance. An Impending Crisis, Manuel W. Mah, Ziad A. Memish
Saudi Medical Journal
The global emergence of antimicrobial resistance has become a pre-eminent concern in medicine and public health. Antimicrobial resistance is of particular concern because the problem is widespread, the causative factors are uncontrolled, and national strategies to address the problem are lacking. The persisting burden of infectious diseases makes elimination of antibiotic use unethical, but dramatic overuse and misuse of antimicrobial agents around the world must be reduced to extend the useful lifetimes of these drugs. Population genetic models suggest that resistance emerges rapidly under the selective pressure of antibiotics, but decays slowly once that pressure is removed. Hence, measures to …

Obstetric Handling Of A Deaf Patient, Mohamed S. Mustafa, Mohamed H. Addar
Saudi Medical Journal
We report our experience of obstetric handling of a deaf pregnant patient antenatally, in labor and postpartum. The patient was deaf from childhood. The attending obstetrician had no training in the necessary skills for communication with the deaf. Fortunately, the patient could read and write English very well and communication was carried out through pen and paper. This proved to be difficult, time-consuming and required a lot of patience. The clinical, psychological and human aspects of the management were gratifying. The patient brought up interesting aspects that need to be considered when dealing with similar patients. Experience of deaf mothers …

Symbolic Racism In The 1995 Louisiana Gubernatorial Election, Jonathan Knuckley, Byron D. Orey
Symbolic Racism In The 1995 Louisiana Gubernatorial Election, Jonathan Knuckley, Byron D. Orey
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
In this paper we explore the effects of symbolic racism on the intended vote choice of whites by examining a white-on-black statewide election. It is argued that symbolic racial attitudes will be activated in a white-on-black election simply because of the mere presence of a black candidate. Methods. The white prospective vote for a white racially conservative candidate is examined using survey data from the 1995 Louisiana gubernatorial runoff conducted by the University of New Orleans Survey Research Center. Results. Symbolic racism was a strong predictor of intended vote choice, even after controlling for partisan identification and self-identified political philosophy. …

Evangelical Episcopalians And The Church Of Jesus In Mexico, 1857–1906, John Steven Rice
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Shortly after the adoption of the 1857 Constitution in Mexico, a small group of Mexican priests left the Roman Catholic Church and attempted to establish a national catholic apostolic church in Mexico. This movement became known as the Church of Jesus. With the help of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States it continued until 1906 when it ceased to be independent and officially became a mission project of the American Episcopal Church. Historians have placed the burden of failure of the Church of Jesus on factors in Mexico and have not taken into account the party strife within …

Advance Directives And Communication Styles In A Lower Rio Grande Valley Health Facility, Armando G. Dominguez
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This study explores physicians' decision-making communication styles at end-of-life and advance directives in a hospital. Participant observation, case studies and a survey questionnaire are used. Egalitarian communication style is found to have moderate reliability. A .6969 coefficient, is measured by Cronbach's Alpha model. Authoritative communication style, yields a less than moderate alpha coefficient of .4278. Regression analysis using these two variables as the independent variables obtains insignificant results. However, sixty-three percent of the respondents speak Spanish moderately or very little. Eighty percent of the surveyed sample do not have training to administer advance directives. Twenty-two percent of the respondents have …

The primary public funding vehicle for employment training and workforce education is in the midst of radical change. The transition from the Job Training Partnership Act of 1982 to the Workforce. Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) will have a dramatic impact on providers and clients alike. This impact is likely to be especially challenging for programs targeted to the hardest to serve populations. For example, many practitioners are worried that members of certain groups will be more likely to be "lost" and not receive needed services under the voucher system that will be the primary payment method under WIA. Linguistic …

Puppies antibody titer response to Canine Distemper virus (CDV) before and after vaccination with a CDV-combined vaccine was studied using a serum neutralization test (SN). A total of 201 samples were obtained from puppies at the Small Animal Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. The result showed that 100%(82/82) of the puppies, before vaccination, had no detectable SN titre (CDV SN-titer <2). Puppies 14 days after the first and second vaccination had a log2 (geometric mean titer, GMT) of 5.2 and 7.8. A group of 20 puppies in which the antibody response was followed after vaccination for a period of time showed the comparable results (log2 [GMT] = 5.3 and 8.5, respectively). There was no difference in the CDV SN-titers among puppies of different ages at vaccination, nor those with a vaccination history for their mothers (p>0.05).

The Oregon Master Woodland Manager Program: Comparison Of 1991 And 1998 Questionnaire Results, Steve Bowers
Journal of Extension
Comparisons of a 1991 and 1998 questionnaire were performed to determine whether Oregon's Master Woodland Manager (MWM) training program continued to adequately assist participating woodland owners in meeting the demands placed on them in the management of their woodland property and in successfully performing volunteer service. Results indicated an increasing amount of volunteer service per MWM, and, while the adequacy of training and materials was deemed satisfactory, there was an increasing demand from MWMs for expanded training in several areas. Results of the questionnaire revealed that lack of knowledge remained the primary barrier in managing woodland property, thus indicating the …

Patriarchy And Pragmatism: Ideological Contradictions In State Policies, Lily Kong, Jasmine S. Chan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Theories concerning the state sometimes treat it as a rational system. This paper raises questions about this assumption by examining the coherence of the ideological frameworks underlying state policies in Singapore. The contradictions are shown most clearly when state policies deal with gender issues, especially where they concern women. Through an examination of such policies, we show that, under some conditions, state patriarchy may be subverted by the state's capitalistic developmental considerations. We are aware that patriarchy does not stand or fall by state policies alone, but the following article illustrates how such policies can limit the space for negotiation …
