Essential Oil Treatments To Control Varroa Destructor Anderson And Trueman 2000 (Formerly Varroa Jacobsoni Oudemans 1904) (Mesostigmata: Varroidae), Maria Mercedes Vargas-Sarmiento

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman is the most serious pest of the honey bee Apis mellifera L. Varroa mites transmit several viruses, bacteria and fungi to the bees, which results in a condition called parasitic mite syndrome. There are no completely reliable treatments available to control the mite. Fifty-one beehives were artificially infested with varroa mites by using three different methods. Observations on mite population growth during three infestation attempts were made. All colonies were inspected for the presence of the small hive beetle, Aethina tumida Murray, no beetles were found. Thirty-five colonies were used to establish the efficacy of …

Evaluating Mandatory Parent Education For Divorcing Couples With Children, Brian John Krolczyk Dec 2000

Evaluating Mandatory Parent Education For Divorcing Couples With Children, Brian John Krolczyk

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Court-mandated parent education for divorcing parents with children has become a standard practice in recent years. The West Virginia State Legislature voted to mandate parent education programs in all of West Virginia effective January, 2000. Research suggests parental conflict is a major factor contributing to adjustment difficulties reported by children. Generally, parent education programs for divorcing couples with children focus on adjustment issues for parents and children as they navigate a demanding period of family change. A literature review of current parent education programs in the United States revealed programs differ in teaching methods used and curriculum. It is reported …

Statistics, Not Experts, Cass R. Sunstein, William Meadow Dec 2000

Statistics, Not Experts, Cass R. Sunstein, William Meadow

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

The legal system should rely much more than it now does on statistical evidence. It should be cautious about the judgments of experts, who make predictable cognitive errors. Like everyone else, experts have a tendency to blunder about risk, a point that has been shown to hold for doctors, whose predictions significantly err in the direction of optimism. We present new evidence that individual doctors' judgments about the ordinary standard of care are incorrect and excessively optimistic. We also show how this evidence bears on legal determinations of negligence, by doctors and others.

Deference And Disability Discrimination, Rebecca Hanner White Dec 2000

Deference And Disability Discrimination, Rebecca Hanner White

Michigan Law Review

For thirty-five years, the civil rights community has paid scant attention to administrative law principles. Those interested in advancing on-the-job equality for this country's working men and women (or in preserving employer autonomy vis-a-vis federal encroachment) have all but ignored what many consider the arcane technicalities of administrative law. This state of affairs is strange when one considers that administration and enforcement of each of our major federal laws outlawing employment discrimination have been confided to an administrative agency, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ("EEOC"). The EEOC, however, has historically been given short shrift by litigants and by the judiciary. …

Toward Improved Support For Research On Delivery Of Home- And Community-Based Long-Term Care, Francis G. Caro

Gerontology Institute Publications

Stronger and more consistent support is needed for research on long-term care. A greater investment in research will strengthen the ability of public and private organizations to provide effective and efficient assistance to people with disabilities and their informal caregivers. This paper provides a rationale for stronger research funding for the field and outlines several options to strengthen research.

The Role Of Institutional And Market Forces In Divergent Organizational Change, Thomas D'Aunno, Melissa Succi, Jeffrey A. Alexander Dec 2000

The Role Of Institutional And Market Forces In Divergent Organizational Change, Thomas D'Aunno, Melissa Succi, Jeffrey A. Alexander

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This paper focuses on a radical change, in which organizations abandon an institutionalized template for arranging their core activities, that is likely to occur in organizational fields that have strong, local market forces and strong but heterogeneous institutional forces. We examine the role of market forces and heterogeneous institutional elements in promoting divergent change in core activities among all U.S. rural hospitals from 1984 to 1991. Results support the view that divergent change depends on both market forces (proximity to competitors, disadvantages in service mix) and institutional forces (state regulation, ownership and governance norms, and mimicry of models of divergent …

Social Climate In The University Social System, Peter L. Groff Dec 2000

Social Climate In The University Social System, Peter L. Groff

Theses and Dissertations

Social climate (campus climate), which is defined as "Equal Opportunity Climate, 1" has been deemed important by recent legislation requiring that federally funded institutions demonstrate a good faith effort to assess "climate" as an ongoing concern. The 1991 Civil Rights Act has expanded the working definition of social climate by including both the atmosphere and the behavior of discrimination. Social climate then becomes a legally recognized dimension of the workplace that is assumed to be a measurable concept, as an organizational level characteristic, that can be measured by individual perceptions and experiences with the social climate. One purpose of this …

Intergenerational Community Schools: A New Practice For A New Time, Peter J. Whitehouse Dec 2000

Intergenerational Community Schools: A New Practice For A New Time, Peter J. Whitehouse

Faculty Scholarship

This article outlines the concept and initial implementation of an intergenerational learning community (ILC), a new charter school concept, and reviews relevant literature. We discuss the mission, curriculum, educational design, philosophy, and lessons learned from initial implementation of The Intergenerational School (TIS). Such multiage communities of learners represent a conceptual and organizational response to the challenges that rapid cultural and environmental change and resultant alienation are posing for human societies. © 2000 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Seismic Adjustments: The Influence Of Inconvenience And Efficacy Perceptions, State Of Residence, And Demographic Factors, Nicole Elise Anderson Dec 2000

Seismic Adjustments: The Influence Of Inconvenience And Efficacy Perceptions, State Of Residence, And Demographic Factors, Nicole Elise Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that peoples' perceptions of household seismic adjustments, in addition to their perceptions of earthquakes themselves, should predict the likelihood that seismic adjustments are performed. However, little research has been done to address this issue. While recent research has found peoples' perceptions of the effectiveness of household adjustments to influence adjustment levels, people's perceptions of inconvenience of household seismic adjustments - namely the cost, time effort, required cooperation and required knowledge involved in making these adjustments - have been found to not influence seismic adjustment. However, this study did find that the higher the perceived inconveniences …

Housing Policies In Santa Clara County: Are They Solving The Housing Crisis?, Bryan Briggs Dec 2000

Housing Policies In Santa Clara County: Are They Solving The Housing Crisis?, Bryan Briggs

Master's Projects

Trying to evaluate complex activities involves one in a series of difficult problems that have not yet been solved. It is particularly difficult to deal with public policymaking, which not only is complex, but also involves many values. Nevertheless, we can develop a rigorous approach to analyzing, evaluating, and improving public policymaking if we start by developing explicit criteria and standards that will replace the implicit assumptions, one-sided views, and halo effects we all use for lack of anything better.

Zoning For Artists’ Live/Work Space In San Francisco, Sara Krieger Dec 2000

Zoning For Artists’ Live/Work Space In San Francisco, Sara Krieger

Master's Projects

Since the late 1800s land-use planning in America has existed to separate manufacturing, commercial, residential, and agricultural activities to “encourage orderly management into the building and maintenance of cities. One of the first examples of regulating the location of urban land-use activities occurred in New York City. In 1916 a group of prosperous Fifth Avenue merchants wanted to halt the encroachment of Lower Manhattan garment manufacturers to the Upper East Side. The Fifth Avenue Association claimed that such loft buildings would “ruin the ambiance of the streets for their customers”^ by intruding on the residential neighborhood and impacting the property …

Works Of Men, Paul N. Akin, Jr. Dec 2000

Works Of Men, Paul N. Akin, Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

True contentment is a thing as active as agriculture. It is the power of getting out of any situation all that there is in it. It is arduous and it is rare. It is the discipline of Epiphany. — G. K. Chesterton

Each of these stories has something to do with the idea of epiphany, as I mean it, the appearance or manifestation of something that wasn’t present before. The characters in the five stories all have something they are active about, which they are doing in the hopes of some measure of contentment. My interest was to pay attention …

The Vascular Flora Of Prentice Cooper State Forest And Wildlife Management Area, Tennessee, John Trevor Beck

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The vascular plants of Tennessee's Prentice Cooper State Forest and Wildlife Management Area were gathered from 112 collection trips made during the growing seasons of 1998 and 1999. Prentice Cooper has an interesting and a rich flora. I collected 2,313 specimens and examined 110 herbarium specimens. The flora is comprised of 139 families, 512 genera, and 1,038 species and lesser taxa. The four largest families are Asteraceae (128 species-12% of the flora), Poaceae (106 species-10%), Cyperaceae (64 species-6%), and Fabaceae (57 species-5%). These four families represent approximately 34% of the total flora. Numerous county extensions, as well as rare, threatened, …

Ryanodine Receptor Adaptation, Michael Fill, A. Zahradníková, Carlos A. Villalba-Galea, I. Zahradník, A. L. Escobar, S. Györke

School of Pharmacy Faculty Articles

In the heart, depolarization during the action potential activates voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels that mediate a small, localized Ca2+ influx (ICa). This small Ca2+ signal activates specialized Ca2+ release channels, the ryanodine receptors (RyRs), in the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). This process is called Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release (CICR). Intuitively, the CICR process should be self-regenerating because the Ca2+ released from the SR should feedback and activate further SR Ca2+ release. However, the CICR process is precisely controlled in the heart and, consequently, some sort of negative control mechanism(s) must exist to …

A Report On An Arts Administration Internship With The New Orleans Museum Of Art, Signe Cutrone Dec 2000

A Report On An Arts Administration Internship With The New Orleans Museum Of Art, Signe Cutrone

Arts Administration Master's Reports (1984-2016)

The internship program at the New Orleans Museum of Art provides graduate and undergraduate students from universities and colleges with on-site training in various museum responsibilities under the guidance and training of a senior level staff member. Internships are available in the administration, curatorial, development or educational departments of the Museum. I chose the public relations department for my internship because public relations is an art organization's essential contact with its public through communications that are not entirely based on publicity, and as such I wanted to learn more about the operation of the department. Because public relations work requires …

The Affordability Of Bay Area Housing, Victoria Willcox Dec 2000

The Affordability Of Bay Area Housing, Victoria Willcox

Master's Projects

Residents of the Bay Area face many challenges, these include an increasing employment and population growth, the shortage of market rate and affordable housing, and a decreasing quality of life for both its residents and workforce. The purpose of this project is to explore the current housing crisis in the Bay Area, by reviewing housing, economic, population growth, and employment data. As part of the housing assessment in Santa Clara County, an overview of the Section 8 Housing Program will be discussed, and this project will be concluded by an informational survey, which was conducted in two San Jose Neighborhoods.
