Hardware Support For Data Dependence Speculation In Distributed Shared-Memory Multiprocessors Via Cache-Block Reconciliation, Renato J. 0. Figueiredo, Jose A.. B. Fortes May 2000

Hardware Support For Data Dependence Speculation In Distributed Shared-Memory Multiprocessors Via Cache-Block Reconciliation, Renato J. 0. Figueiredo, Jose A.. B. Fortes

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Data dependence speculation allows a compiler to relax the constraint of data-independence to issue tasks in parallel, increasing the potential for automatic extraction of parallelism from sequential programs. This paper proposes hardware mechanisms to support a data-dependence speculative distributed shared-memory (DDSM) architecture that enable speculative parallelization of programs with irregular data structures and inherent coarse-grain parallelism. Efficient support for coarse-grain tasks requires large buffers for speculative data; DDSM leverages cache and directory structures to provide large buffers that are managed transparently from applications. The proposed cache and directory extensions provide support for distributed speculative versions of cache blocks, run-time detection …

Concern over the safety of the United States’ defense nuclear reactors in the late 1980s led to congressional creation of an independent oversight board. The Defense Nuclear Facility Safeties Board (DNFSB) is responsible for overseeing safety issues at the U.S. Department of Energy’s nuclear facilities and issuing recommendations on operations and safety at these facilities, which include South Carolina’s Savannah River Site, Texas’ Pantex facility, Colorado’s Rocky Flats Depot, and others. This article provides an historical overview of the DNFSB’s first decade and discusses its relationship and interaction with the Department of Energy and congressional oversight committees as well as …

Equine Laminitis Reviewed, Jocelyn Nelson May 2000

Equine Laminitis Reviewed, Jocelyn Nelson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Laminitis, also known as founder, is one of the most devastating and crippling conditions affecting horses throughout the world today. Traditionally defined as the inflammation of the laminae within the hoof, laminitis actually presents itself as a complicated, multi-system disease, that, through a series of interrelated events, leads to a characteristic lameness. This lameness has serious economic and humane consequences because affected horses are often seen in pain, and frequently must be destroyed due to permanent damages within the hoof.

Law Enforcement Professionalization: The Accreditation Of Law Enforcement, Angel D. Geoghagan

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Rapid social change has led many law enforcement agencies to explore various options that would serve to enhance service delivery, department credibility within communities, and overall professionalism. From a historical perspective, professionalism has been an elusive state for law enforcement agencies ever since the inception of the first police department. A search for such professionalism has taken a turn toward accreditation. Accreditation for law enforcement was studied to determine if the process enhanced the perceived level of credibility and professionalism enjoyed by police departments in the southeastern states of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Three hundred …

Depression Status Predicts False Memory On Recognition Tasks, Jamie Lynn L. Shapiro May 2000

Depression Status Predicts False Memory On Recognition Tasks, Jamie Lynn L. Shapiro

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

It has long been assumed that depression leads to memory impairment. However, previous research findings have been plagued with inconsistencies in methodology and overall findings. Specifically, there has been some debate over whether or not depressed people are capable of spontaneous strategy use, such as utilizing an associative network/categorical structure. In this study, categorical structure was manipulated using the lists constructed by Deese (1959) and Roediger and McDermott (1995) to examine the false memory paradigm as a function of depression. No differences were found for overall recall or the recall of critical target items as a function of depression. However, …

New Trends In Prenatal Screening For Chromosomal Abnormalities, Mohd H. Addar

Saudi Medical Journal

In the recent years, the scope of prenatal genetic diagnosis has expanded greatly with the development of a number of new methods, such as maternal serum screening and ultrasound screening for detection of fetal abnormalities. These methods have the advantage of providing earlier diagnosis in addition to being non-invasive and of less psychological traumas. Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis is another new growing field offering the genetic diagnosis prior to implantation. The most promising of all is the first trimester biochemical screening in conjunction with ultrasound nuchal translucency screening.
