Khat Induced Hemorrhoidal Disease In Yemen, Ahmed M. Al-Hadrani
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential association between the habit of khat chewing and the development of hemorrhoidal disease. METHODS: Four hundred and seventy four individuals (373 men and 101 women) with ages ranging from 17 to 80 years were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 (n=247) chronic khat chewers. Group 2 (n=200) non-khat chewers. Data was collected regarding chewing habits, colorectal symptoms, abdominal, proctoscopic, and operative findings. RESULTS: The key difference between the 2 groups was the incidence of hemorrhoids and hemorrhoidectomy. In the chronic khat chewers group: 169 (62%) had hemorrhoids. Of these …

Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy, Roshan L. Koul, Alexander Chacko, Zakia Al-Lamki, Adel M. Al-Amri, Saleh Al-Khusaiby
Saudi Medical Journal
Five children (3F:2M), in the age group 1 years to 11 years, with Munchausen syndrome by proxy are reported from the Sultanate of Oman. They were seen over a four years period from 1996-1999. In all these children, the mother came up with history of uncontrolled epilepsy. Carbamazepine was the most common antiepileptic drug used. One of these children remained hospitalized elsewhere for nearly 9 months, as a case of uncontrolled status epilepticus. It took 18 months to 6 years (mean 2.8 years) to establish the diagnosis and the mother was the offender in all. The main lead to diagnosis, …

The Lived Experience Of Older Mexcian American Adults With Type 2, Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, Lizza C. Abella
Master's Projects
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of Mexican American older adults with type 2, non-insulin dependent diabetes. Research design and results: A phenomenological research approach was used when interviewing a sample of ten English speaking Mexican American older adults in Santa Clara County, California. Three collective themes were identified: Emotions prevalent in living with diabetes, diabetes' impact on life, and cultural factors affecting diabetes self care. Discussion/conclusions/implications: A duality of thoughts and experiences in living with diabetes, and the strong influence of culture and its beliefs characterize the life-world of Mexican American non-insulin dependent …
Prominent Signs Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity In The Adult, Marcia Katz
Prominent Signs Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity In The Adult, Marcia Katz
Master's Projects
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurophyschiatric syndrome which most commonly becomes apparent during the first few years of grade school. While it was previously thought that this disorder remitted before or during adolescence, it has become well established that many patients will have an illness course that persists well into adulthood. The purpose of this study was to determine the 10 most prominent symptoms of ADHD in the adult population. Using the Dunphy and Winland-Brown (1998) "Circle of Caring" conceptual framework and the Wender (1998) Utah Criteria Scale questionnaire, a convenience sample of females (N=l5) from northern California were …

Analysis Of The City Of San Jose’S Recreational Resource Goal Within The Mayfair Neighborhood, Diana E. Castillo
Master's Projects
Bay Area living affords unique opportunities for study. The continuing surge in high technology employment has attracted thousands to Northern California and the Bay Area. Expansion of the Bay Area’s economy, and of its population, has created a fervent pressure to develop on both commercial and residential fronts.
The pace of development has made the creation of recreational spaces difficult. Housing required to accommodate this explosive growth in population has increased the cost of land to such high levels that civic capacity to acquire land for recreational purposes has been hampered. The demand for housing Is also fueling the construction …

Integrating Residential Care Facilities Into Neighborhoods, Leila H. Moncharsh
Integrating Residential Care Facilities Into Neighborhoods, Leila H. Moncharsh
Master's Projects
This report examines the issue of integrating residential care facilities (RCFs) into neighborhoods from three perspectives: legal, social scientific research, and from a zoning regulatatory approach. RCFs serve a wide range of disabled persons, but the report focuses mainly upon RCF clients who suffer from mental illness, AIDS/HIV, and drug addiction - i.e., the type of clients that most neighborhoods would not welcome. Rather than focusing, however, upon blaming neighbors or clients, this report deals with recognizing that there can be very real impacts from RCFs located in a neighborhood and looks at ways to address the impacts. The report …

Net Migration Distribution Analysis 1980 ~ 1990, Western Santa Clara County, California, Setsuya Yoshizawa
Master's Projects
The purpose of this study is to analyze characteristics of the migration distribution and the demographic variation from 1980 to 1990 over the western area of Santa Clara County, California, using age cohort and sex components.
During the decade from 1980 to 1990, Santa Clara County saw a great magnitude of demographic variation, which was caused by larger in- and out-migration. During the period, large numbers of persons of various backgrounds in-migrated into the western area of the county, which is currently known as the Silicon Valley, and distributed themselves widely over the area. At the same time, many of …

Evaluation Of Stomoxys Calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae) Behavioral Response To Human And Related Odors In A Triple Cage Olfactometer With Insect Traps, Raul A. Alzogaray, David A. Carlson
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
A triple cage olfactometer provided with insect traps was used for evaluating behavioral responses of Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) females to human skin and breath, CO2, and L-lactic acid analogs. After demonstrating there were no significant differences caused by cage location or time of day, 3 sets of 3 olfactometer tests were performed in a day, every 2 h beginning at 0900 hours. When a human hand was used as attractant, the attraction (expressed as percentage of trapped flies) increased as a function of the time; an inverted U-shaped relationship between attractancy and air speed was observed; and variation …
Children's Experience Of Parental Divorce Disclosure: A Look At Intrafamiliar Differences, Heather Westberg
Children's Experience Of Parental Divorce Disclosure: A Look At Intrafamiliar Differences, Heather Westberg
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study explores one aspect of the divorce process, divorce disclosure, to learn more about adult children's perceptions of that experience. Research questions examined participants' perceptions of how they were informed of their parents' divorce, their reactions to the news, and also how they would have preferred to have been told. Within this framework, the study additionally looks at similarities and differences between the experiences of siblings. Twenty siblings from eight different families were interviewed.
The most significant findings were that divorce disclosure occurred most often with only one parent present with most participants being informed in a manner different …

An Examination Of Local Newspaper Photographs Of The Wounded Knee Occupation Of 1973, Anne Katherine Schmidt
An Examination Of Local Newspaper Photographs Of The Wounded Knee Occupation Of 1973, Anne Katherine Schmidt
Student Work
In February of 1973, the American Indian Movement occupied the small village of Wounded Knee. AIM’s purpose was twofold, to increase awareness of the plight of Native Americans in the area and to remove the Tribal Chairman, Richard Wilson. AIM used the historic site of Wounded Knee and stereotypical images of Indians in hopes of gaining national attention through the media. AIM thought this media attention was necessary in order to bring about change. Portrayals of Native Americans in the media have for the most part been stereotypical. Evidence of this can be found in the extensive research on Native …
