Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Systems For Decision Analysis In Public Resource Administration: Case Study In A Southwestern Watershed, William G. Kepner May 2000

Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Systems For Decision Analysis In Public Resource Administration: Case Study In A Southwestern Watershed, William G. Kepner

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Alternative futures analysis is a scenario-based approach to regional land planning that attempts to synthesize existing scientific information in a format useful to community decision makers. Typically, this approach attempts to investigate the impacts of several alternative sets of choices preferred by representative stakeholder groups relative to selected environmental or economical endpoints. Potential impacts from each of the scenarios are compared to current conditions of the region in terms of a set of processes that are modeled within a geographic information system. Future conditions are generally examined from the perspective of a recent baseline condition (versus empirically determined using a …

Reducing The Potential For Falls Among Community Dwelling Older Adults, Sharon-Xiaowen Hu May 2000

Reducing The Potential For Falls Among Community Dwelling Older Adults, Sharon-Xiaowen Hu

Master's Projects

This research study used a pre-test and post-test design to determine if a nursing educational intervention would reduce the potential for falls among the community dwelling elderly. The participants (N=15) were: (a) age 65 or older, (b) mentally competent, (c) predisposed to falls, and (d) living independently. Four instruments were utilized to collect data: (a) the Folstein mini-mental state examination (MMSE), (b) a fall predisposition scale, (c) a home assessment checklist (Tideikaar, 1987), and (d) interview questions. Statistics were used to evaluate findings. The results show that a nursing educational intervention had a positive impact to help reduce the risk …

Factors Influencing Compliance In The Treatment Of Elderly Hypertensive Vietnamese Clients, Cuong Phu Pham May 2000

Factors Influencing Compliance In The Treatment Of Elderly Hypertensive Vietnamese Clients, Cuong Phu Pham

Master's Projects

Little is known about health care beliefs and practices among Vietnamese elderly persons living in the United States. In general, studies of patient compliance with medical advice consistently demonstrate a high level of noncompliance. Not following recommendations can have serious negative consequences in the management of disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate compliance among a group of elderly Vietnamese clients with the plan given to them by their physicians for control of hypertension. Because the literature reports a high correlation between income and level of education with compliance in other groups, these factors were also studied as …

The Process Of Wayfinding, Jinhee Kwon May 2000

The Process Of Wayfinding, Jinhee Kwon

The author defines wayfinding as the act of finding one's way to a destination: spatial problem-solving comprised of three interdependent processes: decision-making, decision-executing, and information processing. The goal of this thesis is to develop a wayfinding system by designing a system of directional signs. The application is the development of an interior signage system for the Rochester Institute of Technology's National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID).

Increasing Self-Concept And Developmental Assets In Adolescents Using Behavioral And Psycho-Educational Interventions, Terriana Milne-Beatty May 2000

Increasing Self-Concept And Developmental Assets In Adolescents Using Behavioral And Psycho-Educational Interventions, Terriana Milne-Beatty

Theses and Dissertations

Adolescent high-risk behaviors such as drug and alcohol use, susceptibility to peer pressure, violence, committing crimes and academic failure are often attributed to low self-concept, resiliency, minimal personal developmental assets, and deficient life skills. Thirty teens (7 males, 23 females) ages 12-15, from diverse cultures, volunteered for 3 groups, and were given a 4-month, 12-session interactive counseling program that incorporated the creative arts, behavioral, and psycho-educational therapy for the purpose of improving teens' self-concept, assets, and life skills. Pre and Posttest measures of The Tennessee Self-Concept Scale-2 showed mean raw scores being statistically significant for improvements within the entire teen …

Attempted Stalking: An Attempt-To-Almost-Attempt-To-Act, Nick Zimmerman May 2000

Attempted Stalking: An Attempt-To-Almost-Attempt-To-Act, Nick Zimmerman

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Crimes of recklessness, crimes of possession, and crimes such as stalking are arguably inchoate. This is so because the government is seeking to prevent conduct which in itself is not physically harmful but has in the past proved to be the precursor to serious criminal acts. The creation of these "inchoate" offenses is not terribly troublesome “ they rest on sound public policy. However, when "inchoate" crimes such as these are enacted, the legislature implicitly creates an attempt of the same crime because almost all fifty states have enacted general attempt statutes “ statutes which create a crime of attempt …

Is Imminence Really Necessity? Reconciling Traditional Self-Defense Doctrine With The Battered Woman Syndrome, Jeffrey B. Murdoch May 2000

Is Imminence Really Necessity? Reconciling Traditional Self-Defense Doctrine With The Battered Woman Syndrome, Jeffrey B. Murdoch

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Since the late 1970s, courts have been forced to deal with the question of whether and how the Battered Woman Syndrome can be used in a defense when a battered victim kills her abuser. The application of traditional self-defense law to these situations has proven problematic and resulted in a lack of uniformity regarding the disposition of these cases. When a theory seems incapable of dealing with situations for which it was purportedly developed, a reexamination of the theory is warranted. This comment focuses on whether imminence is a necessary condition in a claim of self-defense or if there are …

Understanding The Limited Effect Of Moziof V. United States On Wrongful Death Damages Under The Federal Tort Claims Act, Cyrus B. Richardson Iii May 2000

Understanding The Limited Effect Of Moziof V. United States On Wrongful Death Damages Under The Federal Tort Claims Act, Cyrus B. Richardson Iii

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Congress excluded punitive damages from the damages available under the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA). As a result of this exclusion, damage calculations in wrongful death cases are often perceived to be confusing aspects of FTCA litigation. This confusion lies in the determination of which aspects of a state's wrongful death damage award are permitted by the FTCA and which are barred by the Act's punitive damage exclusion. However, in the 1992 FTCA personal injury case Molzof v. United States, the Supreme Court held that the FTCA's punitive damages exclusion bars only the recovery of what are legally considered to …

Young Emigrants On The Oregon, California, And Mormon Trails, 1841-1866, Molly Kizer May 2000

Young Emigrants On The Oregon, California, And Mormon Trails, 1841-1866, Molly Kizer

Student Work

Between 1841 and 1866, the years of heaviest traffic on the overland trails, approximately 500,000 people uprooted their families, departed their homes in the East and began the search for a new life in Oregon, California or Utah. During these three decades, eager pioneers pushed their way across half a continent and participated in one of the greatest of modem pilgrimages. The westward movement has been studied from the viewpoints of men, and, especially in recent years, from the viewpoints of women, but few historians have looked at the massive migration from the perspectives of younger emigrants. In the preface …

A Geographic Model For Urban Parks And Recreation Facility Planning: A Case Study Of Omaha, Nebraska, Barbara Daniels May 2000

A Geographic Model For Urban Parks And Recreation Facility Planning: A Case Study Of Omaha, Nebraska, Barbara Daniels

Student Work

Recreation resources are unevenly distributed and contantly changing in the city. In this case, the structure of parks and recreation resources in Omaha, Nebraska, are of concern. To formulate a more precise and meaningful notion of recreation supply and demand; recreation scarcity, allocation and availability were calculated from a block by block survey of Omaha's population. Population density was used to determine the distribution of population relative to park acreage. Acres per capita within recreation service areas was considered as a rough estimate of intensity of use at park facilities. Additionally, acres of recreation land relative to acres of non-recreation …

Biology Faculty Articles

Factors accounting for long-term nonprogression may include infection with an attenuated strain of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), genetic polymorphisms in the host, and virus-specific immune responses. In this study, we examined eight individuals with nonprogressing or slowly progressing HIV-1 infection, none of whom were homozygous for host-specific polymorphisms (CCR5-Δ32, CCR2-64I, and SDF-1-3'A) which have been associated with slower disease progression. HIV-1 was recovered from seven of the eight, and recovered virus was used for sequencing the full-length HIV-1 genome; full-length HIV-1 genome sequences from the eighth were determined following amplification of viral …

A Radiation Hybrid Map Of The Cat Genome: Implications For Comparative Mapping, William J. Murphy, Shan Sun, Zhang-Qun Chen, Naoya Yuhki, Deborah Hirschmann, Marilyn Menotti-Raymond, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

Ordered gene maps of mammalian species are becoming increasingly valued in assigning gene variants to function in human and animal models, as well as recapitulating the natural history of genome organization. To extend this power to the domestic cat, a radiation hybrid (RH) map of the cat was constructed integrating 424 Type I-coding genes with 176 microsatellite markers, providing coverage over all 20 feline chromosomes. Alignment of parallel RH maps of human and cat reveal 100 conserved segments ordered (CSOs) between the species, nearly three times the number observed with reciprocal chromosome painting analyses. The observed number is equivalent to …

Effects Of High Fruit Intake On Systematic Blood Pressure In African Americans, Leonard L. Gibbons May 2000

Effects Of High Fruit Intake On Systematic Blood Pressure In African Americans, Leonard L. Gibbons

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This randomized dietary intervention trial examined the effects of a high fruit diet on systemic BP in African-Americans. Thirty-eight free-living subjects with systolic BPs between 130-159 mm Hg and diastolic BPs between 85-99 mm Hg, were enrolled for a six week period. The cases were given daily supplements of potassium rich foods: bananas, orange juice and raisins, while no dietary advice or food was given to the controls.

After six weeks, the means systolic BP was 5.79 mm Hg ( p=.009) lower in the cases than the controls. The mean diastolic BP at week six was 3.76 mm Hg (p=.047) …

The Botetourt Dragoons In War And Peace, Michael G. Henkle May 2000

The Botetourt Dragoons In War And Peace, Michael G. Henkle

Honors Theses

This thesis studies a Confederate cavalry company from the immediate prewar years through the war, ending with the death of one of its last members. Most soldiers were residents of Botetourt County, Virginia. The study focuses upon both the men themselves and the battles in which they fought. Letters, diaries, and postwar accounts reveal their thoughts. After the war, many took an active role in both veterans' affairs and their community by joining veteran camps and participating in politics. Near the end, many received pensions or stayed in old soldiers' homes.

Gender Differences Of The Older Adult In Relationship To Ego Integrity And The Need For Control., Ginger Helm May 2000

Gender Differences Of The Older Adult In Relationship To Ego Integrity And The Need For Control., Ginger Helm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined gender differences in relationship to ego integrity resolution of Erikson's stage theory and the need for control in the older adult ranging from 55-90 years of age. Erikson's ego integrity versus despair was measured with a subscale found in Measures of Psychological Development by Hawley (1988). The need for control was measured with a scale developed by Burger and Cooper (1979).

Because of social roles, it was first predicted that males would score higher on resolution of ego integrity and lower on the need for control. The mean resolution of integrity score for males (N=31) was …
