Prostate Cancer Detection, Characterization, And Clinical Outcomes In Men Aged 70 Years And Older Referred For Transrectal Ultrasound And Prostate Biopsies, Jeffrey C. Sung, John N. Kabalin, Martha K. Terris
United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications
Objectives. To evaluate the diagnostic findings and treatment options chosen in men aged 70 years and older referred for prostate biopsy.
Methods. Age, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), biopsy pathology, clinical stage, treatment pursued, and treatment outcome were analyzed in 210 men age 70 years and older referred for transrectal ultrasound and prostate biopsies. All patients were followed for a mean of 46.9 months (range 28 to 63).
Results. Cancer was found in 120 (56.8%) of the patients. The cancer detection rate was significantly higher (81.0%) in patients aged 80 years and older than those younger than 80 years. …

Subject Choice By Students In Year 12 In Australian Secondary Schools, Sue Fullarton, John Ainley
Subject Choice By Students In Year 12 In Australian Secondary Schools, Sue Fullarton, John Ainley
LSAY Research Reports
Choices that are in the subjects studied in senior secondary school influence differences in access to higher education, vocational education and training, and to labour market outcomes. Previous studies have shown that students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds, those from private schools, high early school achievers and students from non-English speaking backgrounds are more likely to participate in the courses that are avenues to higher education and the professions. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds tend to participate in courses that lead to vocational education and training or more often to entry into the labour market without any further formal education or training. …

Glutamate Transmission In The Nucleus Accumbens Mediates Relapse In Cocaine Addiction, Jennifer L. Cornish, Peter W. Kalivas
Glutamate Transmission In The Nucleus Accumbens Mediates Relapse In Cocaine Addiction, Jennifer L. Cornish, Peter W. Kalivas
MUSC Faculty Journal Articles
Elevated dopamine transmission in the nucleus accumbens is thought to be a primary mediator of addiction to cocaine. However, repeated exposure to cocaine is associated with the recruitment of glutamate transmission. This poses the possibility that the behaviors characterizing cocaine addiction, such as craving-induced relapse, may not be preferentially mediated by dopamine transmission. An animal model of relapse was used to demonstrate that glutamate, and not dopamine transmission in the nucleus accumbens, is a primary mediator of cocaineinduced reinstatement of drug-seeking behavior. Reinstatement was produced by a systemic injection of cocaine or by the microinjection of the glutamate receptor agonist …

Codebook: The Lsay 1998 Year 9 Sample Codebook: Wave 2 (1999) Technical Report No. 22, Nicole Fleming
LSAY Technical Reports
The 1998 Year 9 Cohort (Y98) In 1998, a nationally representative sample of approximately 14,000 Year 9 students was selected to form the second cohort of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth. The sample was constructed by randomly selecting two Year 9 classes from a sample of schools designed to represent state and sector. Reading and numeracy tests were administered to students in their schools to provide information on early school achievement for use in later analyses of educational and labour market participation. Students also completed a background questionnaire about their educational and vocational plans and attitudes to school. The …

Aeiouy Words, Susan Thorpe
Aeiouy Words, Susan Thorpe
Word Ways
With the 30-year quest for AEIOU words now behind us, I have taken the opportunity to add the letter Y and repeat the exercise for AEIOUY words. Y acts as a vowel in words such as symbol and is referred to variously as the sixth vowel, a semi-vowel or a secondary vowel. The world of AEIOUY words, those in which the six vowels A, E, I, O, U, and Y each occur just once, takes us into largely unexplored territory. There are 720 permutations of the six vowels A, E, I , O , U, and Y, six times as …

Word Ways
A book containing apposite letter-unit anagrams of every verse in three complete books of the King James Bible ("The Anagrammed Bible: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon" by Richard Brodie and Mike Keith) was recently published [1]. In this article I present some logological observations and discoveries resulting form the completion of this project.

Publications and Research
An outbreak of encephalitis occurred in New York City in late August 1999, the first caused by West Nile virus in North America. Histopathologic and immunopathologic examinations performed on human autopsy materials helped guide subsequent laboratory and epidemiologic investigations that led to identification of the etiologic agent.

Claybrook V. Owensboro: Equality, Integration, And Struggle, Lori Coghill
Claybrook V. Owensboro: Equality, Integration, And Struggle, Lori Coghill
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In 1883 the case of Claybrook v. Owensboro was one of the first challenges to equal educational funding under the Fourteenth Amendment. The definition of the Fourteenth Amendment's equal protection clause was vague and left blacks with little guidance about their new found constitutional rights. By analyzing the case along with legal, educational, and local racial attitudes toward blacks at the time, historians and educators can better understand the evolution of the Fourteenth Amendment in state and local issues. The case record from Federal Reports as well as the case file from the law final record book at the National …

A Survey Of Minority Students Who Use Retention Program Services At A Predominantly White Institution, Jamalya Luney
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This researcher seeks to examine the characteristics of those minority students, at a Predominantly White Institution (PWI), who frequently use retention program services versus those who do not frequently use retention program services. Frequent use of retention program was considered to be every other week or more. Infrequent user of retention program was considered once a month or less often. Data analysis revealed many similarities between the groups relating to grade point average (GPA), marital status, and housing status. Despite the similarities between the groups, there were some differences, although not significant. The mean age of the frequent users was …
Improving Oral Reading Performance: A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Two Reading Interventions, Allison Morris
Improving Oral Reading Performance: A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Two Reading Interventions, Allison Morris
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Reading can be considered as the most fundamental skill learned in a person's life. It lays the foundation for later success in academics, vocational pursuits, and life. Because of reading's importance in everyday life, the search for effective reading interventions for those experiencing reading difficulties is continual. A single-subjects design was used to examine the overall effect of two reading interventions, listening previewing and folding-in, on oral reading performance. Nine regular education third-grade students served as subjects in the present study. Results indicated that neither the listening previewing procedure nor the folding-in technique were particularly successful at improving oral reading …
