Benchmarking Irrigation, Charles M. Burt Aug 2000

Benchmarking Irrigation, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

A few performance indicators (e.g., “efficiency”) have been included in irrigation jargon for many decades. However, at the Rome meeting we will have a comprehensive discussion on irrigation benchmarking. It will be easy to fall into a discussion of definitions and specifics. Prior to that, it might be helpful to consider the following aspects that will help to set the stage for the details:

Prolonged Cyclooxygenase-2 Induction In Neurons And Glia Following Traumatic Brain Injury In The Rat, Kenneth I. Strauss, Mary F. Barbe, Renee Marshall Demarest, Ramesh Raghupathi, Samir Mehta, Raj K. Narayan Aug 2000

Prolonged Cyclooxygenase-2 Induction In Neurons And Glia Following Traumatic Brain Injury In The Rat, Kenneth I. Strauss, Mary F. Barbe, Renee Marshall Demarest, Ramesh Raghupathi, Samir Mehta, Raj K. Narayan

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) is a primary inflammatory mediator that converts arachidonic acid into precursors of vasoactive prostaglandins, producing reactive oxygen species in the process. Under normal conditions COX2 is not detectable, except at low abundance in the brain. This study demonstrates a distinctive pattern of COX2 increases in the brain over time following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Quantitative lysate ribonuclease protection assays indicate acute and sustained increases in COX2 mRNA in two rat models of TBI. In the lateral fluid percussion model, COX2 mRNA is significantly elevated (>twofold, p < 0.05, Dunnett) at 1 day postinjury in the injured cortex and bilaterally in the hippocampus, compared to sham-injured controls. In the lateral cortical impact model (LCI), COX2 mRNA peaks around 6 h postinjury in the ipsilateral cerebral cortex (fivefold induction, p < 0.05, Dunnett) and in the ipsilateral and contralateral hippocampus (two- and six-fold induction, respectively, p < 0.05, Dunnett). Increases are sustained out to 3 days postinjury in the injured cortex in both models. Further analyses use the LCI model to evaluate COX2 induction. Immunoblot analyses confirm increased levels of COX2 protein in the cortex and hippocampus. Profound increases in COX2 protein are observed in the cortex at 1-3 days, that return to sham levels by 7 days postinjury (p < 0.05, Dunnett). The cellular pattern of COX2 induction following TBI has been characterized using immunohistochemistry. COX2-immunoreactivity (-ir) rises acutely (cell numbers and intensity) and remains elevated for several days following TBI. Increases in COX2-ir colocalize with neurons (MAP2-ir) and glia (GFAP-ir). Increases in COX2-ir are observed in cerebral cortex and hippocampus, ipsilateral and contralateral to injury as early as 2 h postinjury. Neurons in the ipsilateral parietal, perirhinal and piriform cortex become intensely COX2-ir from 2 h to at least 3 days postinjury. In agreement with the mRNA and immunoblot results, COX2-ir appears greatest in the contralateral hippocampus. Hippocampal COX2-ir progresses from the pyramidal cell layer of the CA1 and CA2 region at 2 h, to the CA3 pyramidal cells and dentate polymorphic and granule cell layers by 24 h postinjury. These increases are distinct from those observed following inflammatory challenge, and correspond to brain areas previously identified with the neurological and cognitive deficits associated with TBI. While COX2 induction following TBI may result in selective beneficial responses, chronic COX2 production may contribute to free radical mediated cellular damage, vascular dysfunction, and alterations in cellular metabolism. These may cause secondary injuries to the brain that promote neuropathology and worsen behavioral outcome.

Sequential Group Trial To Determine Gastrointestinal Site Of Absorption And Systemic Exposure Of Azathioprine, Jane M. Gervasio, Rex O. Brown, John Lima, M. G. Tabbaa, Thomas Abell, Robert Werkman, Lynda J. Haberer, Lawrence J. Hak Aug 2000

Sequential Group Trial To Determine Gastrointestinal Site Of Absorption And Systemic Exposure Of Azathioprine, Jane M. Gervasio, Rex O. Brown, John Lima, M. G. Tabbaa, Thomas Abell, Robert Werkman, Lynda J. Haberer, Lawrence J. Hak

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Azathioprine (AZA) is used in the treatment of patients with refractory inflammatory bowel disease; however, its use is limited because of systemic toxicity associated with long-term use. Ileocecal delivery of AZA might be advantageous if local intestinal therapeutic effects could be provided with decreased systemic side effects. Decreased cecal systemic absorption would allow higher dosages of AZA to be administered. A two-phase study was performed to compare the systemic exposure of AZA and 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) following administration of AZA into the stomach, jejunum, and cecum and to compare the systemic exposure to AZA and 6-MP following administration of three different …

Investigating Emotional Intelligence In Children: Exploring Its Relationship To Cognitive Intelligence, Margaret Allen Aug 2000

Investigating Emotional Intelligence In Children: Exploring Its Relationship To Cognitive Intelligence, Margaret Allen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The phrase emotional intelligence was made popular in the mainstream culture by Daniel Goleman's book Emotional Intelligence. Goleman's book focuses mainly on aspects of emotional intelligence in adults, as does most of the literature that exists concerning emotional intelligence. The little empirical research that exists in the field of emotional intelligence has been conducted primarily with adults. With the advent of the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version, it has become possible to measure this construct in children. In the current study, sixty children ages nine to twelve were administered the BarOn EQ-i:YV and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children …

Morphological, Molecular, And Biogeographical Variation Within The Imperiled Virginia Spiraea, Constance Anders Aug 2000

Morphological, Molecular, And Biogeographical Variation Within The Imperiled Virginia Spiraea, Constance Anders

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Spiraea virginiana Britton is a rare federally listed rhizomatous shrub endemic to the southern Blue Ridge and Appalachian Plateau physiographic provinces. Populations of S. virginiana are found restricted to scoured sections of high gradient streams within the Ohio River drainage. Present evidence indicates the species is reproducing asexually, most probably through the deposition of rhizomes from upstream populations forming new downstream ramets. Phenotypic variation was examined through a morphometric evaluation of 25 leaf measurements and analyzed using Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and discriminant function analysis. Identity and structure at the molecular level as examined with Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPDs) …

Trends In Fertility In Kentucky Counties: Social And Structural Components, Tara Beard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Stratification variables - such as educational attainment, income, poverty, race, women in the labor force, and metropolitan residence - as they relate to demographic change and response theory and economic analysis theory were examined. The theoretical perspectives were supported in the findings because the variables related to economic status highly correlated with fertility levels. This study used the United States Census Bureau and Kentucky Vital Statistics data to examine changes in fertility in Kentucky counties from 1970 to 1990 and to test whether fertility rates (GFR and children ever born) for the years 1970, 1980, and 1990 varied according to …

Study Of Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons Emitted In The Fly Ash From Coal Combustion In A Fluidized Bed Combuster, Rebecca Heltsley Aug 2000

Study Of Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons Emitted In The Fly Ash From Coal Combustion In A Fluidized Bed Combuster, Rebecca Heltsley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Exposure to Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) has long been identified as an environmental concern because of their carcinogenic and mutagenic effects. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a list of 16 PAHs that are found on the Priority Pollutant List due to the extensive amount of data suggesting the hazards of these compounds. These toxic compounds are often emitted into the atmosphere by anthropogenic sources, such as combustors. Therefore, analysis of these compounds must be conducted during coal combustion. Two 1000-hour coal combustion burns were performed using the 0.1 MWth bench-scale fluidized bed combustor (FBC), which is found in the …

Juvenile Gangs In Schools: Characteristics, Causes, And Possible Solutions, Gordon A. Crews Aug 2000

Juvenile Gangs In Schools: Characteristics, Causes, And Possible Solutions, Gordon A. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

The purpose of this seminar is to acquaint participants with the ever-changing characteristics, often conflicting issues of causation, and various proposed solutions to the myriad of problems associated with gangs in schools. Special attention is given to the evolving nature of gangs in K-12 educational institutions (e.g., new types of juvenile groups developing and their associated behavior). Traditional subjects such as gang recruitment, initiation, and criminal activity are examined by discussing the many ways they manifest themselves in the school setting. Finally, a conceptual framework is presented by which a school can identify, understand, and begin to address a potential …

Characterization Of An Isolate That Uses Vinyl Chloride As A Growth Substrate Under Aerobic Conditions, Matthew F. Verce, Ricky L. Ulrich, David L. Freedman

Publications

An aerobic enrichment culture was developed by using vinyl chloride (VC) as the sole organic carbon and electron donor source. VC concentrations as high as 7.3 mM were biodegraded without apparent inhibition. VC use did not occur when nitrate was provided as the electron acceptor. A gram-negative, rod-shaped, motile isolate was obtained from the enrichment culture and identified based on biochemical characteristics and the sequence of its 16S rRNA gene as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, designated strain MF1. The observed yield of MF1 when it was grown on VC was 0.20 mg of total suspended solids (TSS)/mg of VC. Ethene, acetate, glyoxylate, …

Eye Position Signal Modulates A Human Parietal Pointing Region During Memory-Guided Movements., J F Desouza, S P Dukelow, J S Gati, R S Menon, R A Andersen, T Vilis

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined the signal in parietal regions that were selectively activated during delayed pointing to flashed visual targets and determined whether this signal was dependent on the fixation position of the eyes. Delayed pointing activated a bilateral parietal area in the intraparietal sulcus (rIPS), rostral/anterior to areas activated by saccades. During right-hand pointing to centrally located targets, the left rIPS region showed a significant increase in activation when the eye position was rightward compared with leftward. As expected, activation in motor cortex showed no modulation when only eye position changed. During pointing to retinotopically identical …

Whatever Happened To Truth, Justice, And The American Way?, Don P. Diffine Ph.D. Aug 2000

Whatever Happened To Truth, Justice, And The American Way?, Don P. Diffine Ph.D.

Belden Center Books

The story of the American incentive system is the story of all the people in it. Each American needs to know how he fits into the story, what his part is, and what he can do to make the picture better. This book also celebrates, and puts great emphasis on, our Creator who made life not only possible but also worthwhile. Any yet, as Americans are so cosmopolitan in personality, they certainly are not of one mind on the issue of free, private enterprise. Many Americans seem to assume that free enterprise is a natural condition, but the fact is …

Economic Analysis Of A Large Scale Oral Vaccination Program To Control Raccoon Rabies, Philip Kemere, Michael K. Liddel, Phylo Evangelou, Dennis Slate, Steven Osmek Aug 2000

Economic Analysis Of A Large Scale Oral Vaccination Program To Control Raccoon Rabies, Philip Kemere, Michael K. Liddel, Phylo Evangelou, Dennis Slate, Steven Osmek

Human Conflicts with Wildlife: 2002 Symposium

Since the late 1980s, results of oral vaccination trials in several states have provided growing evidence that this vaccination method may be effective for controlling the spread of rabies in raccoons (Procyon lotor). This study examines the economic feasibility of using oral vaccination on a larger scale than previous trials. We analyze the benefits and costs associated with a hypothetical barrier that would stretch from Lake Erie to the Gulf of Mexico, combining natural geographic features provided by the Appalachian Mountains with oral vaccination zones. The goal of this barrier would be to prevent the raccoon rabies variant …

Cormorant Depredation Losses And Their Prevention At Catfish Farms: Economic Considerations, James F. Glahn, Scott J. Werner, Terry Hanson, Carole R. Engle Aug 2000

Cormorant Depredation Losses And Their Prevention At Catfish Farms: Economic Considerations, James F. Glahn, Scott J. Werner, Terry Hanson, Carole R. Engle

Human Conflicts with Wildlife: 2002 Symposium

Although several piscivorous birds are involved in depredation conflicts with southern aquaculture, the double-crested cormorant causes some of the most widespread and significant problems to catfish, the dominant industry. Unlike other agriculture commodities, catfish losses due to predation cannot be directly measured, so we review several approaches taken to estimate these losses. Although these approaches are valid for predicting the costs of simply replacing these fish at the time of predation, they have been criticized because they failed to consider the functional relationships between predation and output parameters at harvest. Recent controlled experiments are reviewed that confirm previous estimates of …

Damage Abatement And Compensation Programs As Incentives For Wildlife Management On Private Land, Jonathan K. Yoder Aug 2000

Damage Abatement And Compensation Programs As Incentives For Wildlife Management On Private Land, Jonathan K. Yoder

Human Conflicts with Wildlife: 2002 Symposium

Public damage abatement and compensation programs may be used to alter private incentives for damage abatement and habitat provision. A model is developed that explains the economic logic behind prevalent characteristics of public wildlife damage programs. The model is supported with an examination of a broad cross-section of wildlife agency policy and law. The model can be used by wildlife managers and policy makers as a conceptual framework for understanding the incentive effects of compensation and abatement policy.

Economic Considerations Of Damage Assessment, Richard M. Engeman Aug 2000

Economic Considerations Of Damage Assessment, Richard M. Engeman

Human Conflicts with Wildlife: 2002 Symposium

Cost-effectiveness is the fundamental economic test of any damage control or damage mitigation strategy, and damage assessment is the essential component for determination of cost-effectiveness. However, there are many potential costs associated with making damage assessments. The sampling and measurement required to produce a damage assessment have associated effort and costs, but even greater costs can be incurred due to inappropriate management decisions resulting from inaccurate damage assessments. Other costs can result from using an assessment method that is unsuited to management objectives, or by misinterpreting or not understanding the relationship between observed damage and actual losses. The concepts of …
