This one-day visit to a nearby jurisdiction was designed to allow participation by federal staff who have been unable to commit the three days required by a typical Forum site visit. Site visitors were given an overview of health care in Virginia and an introduction to the Children's Medical Income Security Program (CMSIP) as well as its proposed replacement, the Family Access to Medical Insurance Security program (FAMIS). A panel representing community organizations and providers shared their experience, touching on provider concerns, coordination of outreach efforts across counties, and assistance for clients after they are enrolled. Cancer Surveillance Series: Non-Hodgkin’S Lymphoma Incidence By Histologic Subtype In The United States From 1978 Through 1995, Frank D. Groves, Martha S. Linet, Lois B. Travis, Susan S. Devesa

United States Public Health Resources

Background: Clinical investigations have shown prognostic heterogeneity within the non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas (NHLs) according to histology, but few descriptive studies have considered NHLs by subgroup. Our purpose is to assess the demographic patterns and any notable increases in population- based rates of different histologic subgroups of NHL.
Methods: Using data collected by the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program of the National Cancer Institute, we calculated incidence rates for the major clinicopathologic categories of NHL by age, race, sex, geographic area, and time period.
Results: Among the 60 057 NHL cases diagnosed during the period from 1978 through 1995, total incidence …

Social Anxiety Scale For Adolescents: Normative Data And Further Evidence Of Construct Validity, Heidi M. Inderbitzen-Nolan, Kenneth S. Walters

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Replicates and extends prior work with the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS– A) by providing psychometric data, further evidence of construct validity, and largesample based normative data. Participants were 2,937 students (1,431 boys and 1,506 girls) in Grades 6, 7, 8, 9, and 11. Students completed the SAS–A, the Revised Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS), and the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI). Results replicated a three-factor structure for the SAS–A, with good internal consistencies for its subscales. Normative data were subdivided by sex and grade group. Construct validity included replication of prior relations with general anxiety (RCMAS) and depressive symptomatology …

Effect Of Early Childhood Tobacco Education Program On Knowledge And Attitudes Of Elementary Students, Dianne G. Pittman Aug 2000

Effect Of Early Childhood Tobacco Education Program On Knowledge And Attitudes Of Elementary Students, Dianne G. Pittman

MSN Research Projects

Tobacco use is recognized as the number one preventable cause of disease and death in the United States. As such, development of better tobacco-use prevention strategies, utilized by health care providers, is a worthy endeavor. Where it exists, initiation of formal tobacco education within the schools is focused at sixth- to eighth-grade students, the age research has shown when most tobacco experimentation begins, yet well beyond the age when ideas and attitudes are developed in favor of or in opposition to tobacco use. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effect of an early childhood tobacco education …

Chronic Illness And Health Insurance-Related Job Lock, Eleaonr D. Kinney, Thomas J. Kniesner, Kevin Stroupe Aug 2000

Chronic Illness And Health Insurance-Related Job Lock, Eleaonr D. Kinney, Thomas J. Kniesner, Kevin Stroupe

Economics - All Scholarship

We examine job duration patterns for evidence of health insurance-related job lock among chronically ill workers or workers with a chronically ill family member. Using Cox proportional hazard models, we allow for more general insurance effects than in the existing literature to indicate the impact of health insurance and health status on workers' job durations. We use data for workers in Indiana predating the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to examine the potential impact of HIPAA on job mobility. Chronic illness reduced job mobility by about 40 percent among the workers in our sample who relied on their …
