The Myth Of The Texas Miracle In Education, Walt Haney Aug 2000

The Myth Of The Texas Miracle In Education, Walt Haney

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

I summarize the recent history of education reform and statewide testing in Texas, which led to introduction of the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) in 1990-91. A variety of evidence in the late 1990s led a number of observers to conclude that the state of Texas had made near miraculous progress in reducing dropouts and increasing achievement. The passing scores on TAAS tests were arbitrary and discriminatory. Analyses comparing TAAS reading, writing and math scores with one another and with relevant high school grades raise doubts about the reliability and validity of TAAS scores. ...

Consequences Of Dominance-Mediated Habitat Segregation In American Redstarts During The Nonbreeding Season, Peter P. Marra, Richard T. Holmes Aug 2000

Consequences Of Dominance-Mediated Habitat Segregation In American Redstarts During The Nonbreeding Season, Peter P. Marra, Richard T. Holmes

Dartmouth Scholarship

Several species of migratory songbirds exhibit a distinct form of habitat segregation while on their Neotropical wintering grounds in which males and females occupy different habitat types. In the American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla), that sexual habitat segregation is a result of behavioral dominance of older males. In that study, we examined whether such dominance behavior and the resulting differential habitat segregation has consequences for the condition or survival of excluded individuals. We quantified the physical condition and survival of redstarts (both males and females) occupying two habitat types that differed in the proportion of males and females present …

Benzene As An Indoor Air Pollutant In Fairbanks, Alaska, Janet Elaine Ricker Aug 2000

Benzene As An Indoor Air Pollutant In Fairbanks, Alaska, Janet Elaine Ricker

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Benzene is a known carcinogen found in gasoline, automobile exhaust, cigarette smoke, and organic solvents. Previous studies suggest that sources of chemicals within the home are the major factors influencing personal exposure to benzene. Indoor air was sampled for benzene in order to determine the concentrations present in Fairbanks homes, and to indentify what factors might be associated with higher concentrations. Sampling sites were limited to homes with attached garages and with no smokers in the household. A wide range of benzene concentrations was observed in the eight homes sampled. The highest concentration was about 70 ppbv, and the concentration …

Their movements were such that one walked the middle of the tunnel in front of the other who lightened the way, while one was moving closer to the left side wall into the direction of movement – leaving out. At about 22.5 metre from the entrance [a fisherman] activated a mine (most probably a PROM-1) whose explosive blast threw him badly so that his head was found 2 metres from the crater from where the mine detonated, with his legs in the direction of the exit.

Neuroendocrine Control Of Song In The Dark-Eyed Junco (Junco Hyemalis), Stephanie Marie Dloniak Aug 2000

Neuroendocrine Control Of Song In The Dark-Eyed Junco (Junco Hyemalis), Stephanie Marie Dloniak

Biological Sciences

This dissertation includes three discrete projects addressing various aspects of the neuroendocrine control of song in the Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), a migratory songbird. Specifically, the roles of testosterone, photoperiodic condition, opioids, and age were investigated with respect to song production and neural plasticity in the regions of the brain that control song (vocal control regions, VCRs)." The author "found that, in males photoperiodic condition and testosterone interact to regulate seasonal VCR volume plasticity, whereas testosterone alone controls song production. The opioid system is probably not involved in VCR plasticity or song production, but is indicated to play a role …

Response Of Northern Red-Backed Vole (Clethrionomys Rutilus) Populations To A Major Spruce Beetle Infestation In The Copper River Basin, Alaska, Thomas Mcdonough Aug 2000

Response Of Northern Red-Backed Vole (Clethrionomys Rutilus) Populations To A Major Spruce Beetle Infestation In The Copper River Basin, Alaska, Thomas Mcdonough

Biological Sciences

A spruce bark beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis) epidemic in the Copper Basin of Alaska beginning in the late 1980's has infested over 200,000 ha of white spruce forests in the region. The impact of spruce beetle-induced habitat changes on the northern red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rutilus) was investigated using mark/recapture techniques for 2 field seasons. Vole abundance and recruitment was significantly greater on low versus heavily infested sites but a large vole survival response was lacking. Vole food resources and protective vegetative cover did not vary substantially in areas with different levels of spruce mortality. Male movement distances were influenced by sex …

Is Sydney Ready For The Olymics And Are The Olympians Ready For Sydney?, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It is now less than a month from the opening of the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, where it will be winter when the games begin and spring when they end. It will be fall in the Northern Hemisphere before the games end, and summer nowhere, expect perhaps in Lausanne where the sun always shines at the Court of Juan Antonio the Great.
