Method Of Treatment Of Conditions Associate With Oxidative Tissue Damage, John M. Carney, Robert A. Floyd

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

Compositions containing as the active ingredient a spin-trapping reagent, preferably α-phenyl butyl nitrone (PBN) or spin-trapping derivatives thereof, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier for administration to a patient are disclosed for treating or preventing symptoms associated with aging or other conditions associated with oxidative tissue damage. Other spin-trapping agents can also be used, such as 5,5-dimethyl pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) or α-(4-pyridyl 1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone (POBN), and other spin-trapping derivatives thereof. These compositions and methods are useful in the treatment of age-related disorders, pre-surgical and/or pre-anesthetic preparation or administration of chemotherapeutic agents, and in the treatment of disorders or trauma of the brain, …

The SCISAT-1 Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) Mission is a part of the Canadian Space Agency’s (CSA’s) space science program, to support ongoing research in the areas of solarterrestrial relations, atmospheric sciences and space astronomy. Bristol Aerospace Limited is the CSA’s Spacecraft Prime Contractor for the ACE Mission. The ACE spacecraft will be launched on a Pegasus XL vehicle in mid-2002, co-manifested with a NASA spacecraft. A Control and Data Handling (C&DH) Unit is being developed by Bristol for the ACE Mission. This C&DH Unit will be responsible for all onboard command, control, monitoring and science data recording. MightySat is a United States Air Force (USAF) multi-mission, small satellite program dedicated to providing rapid, frequent, on-orbit demonstrations of high payoff space system technologies. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is the USAF center for space technology research and development. MightySat platforms provide the on-orbit “lab bench” for responsively testing emerging technologies to ensure their readiness for operational Air Force missions. This paper focuses on the MightySat II space vehicle, follow-on to MightySat I (on-orbit from 14 December 1998 to 16 November 1999), which was developed largely by Spectrum Astro, Inc. in Gilbert, Arizona. Hare, Roger C. Oral History Interview, Greg Beam

Roger Hare was born in Houlton, Maine on December 27, 1927. His parents were Hilda Porter and Donald Hare. He grew up in Houlton and attended Monticello Elementary and Middle School and Houlton High School. When he was seventeen, he contracted tuberculosis and spent two years at a sanitarium in Hebron. After that he went to work for the Maine Turnpike in 1947 as one of the first toll collectors. He worked for the International Association of Machinists as a field staff person for twenty-four years and as a union representative for forty years.

Based on an exhibition for University of South Carolina students reading Michael Shaara's bestselling book The Killer Angels, this catalogue recounts the story of the battle of Gettysburg day by day, with an opening section introducing the major participants and a final section dealing with the commemoration of the battle and its treatment in later American literature. All the items in the exhibition are drawn from the Francis A. Lord Civil War Collection and the Robert S. Chamberlain Military History Collection, both in Rare Books & Special Collections, University of South Carolina Libraries.

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Odor emissions from anaerobic lagoons containing large populations of phototrophic bacteria are usually minimal. This study was conducted to determine whether copper (123 ppm) and zinc (2,310 ppm) in diets fed to weanling pigs for therapeutic purposes affect phototrophic conditions within lagoons. Column reactors containing 47 L of swine lagoon sludge and supernatant were used to represent lagoons. The reactors were placed in an environmental chamber maintained at 24° C. Copper, zinc, and control manure were added to the reactors at a volatile solids loading rate of 128 gvs m–3 da–1 using a hydraulic retention time of …
