Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward Sep 2000

Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward

Peer Reviewed Articles

Modeling the scheduling of patient appointments is an important issue in simulating a health care delivery facility. A simulation model must include the control logic of appointment scheduling software and the explicit and implicit decision rules used by the human scheduler in selecting an appointment time. Expert systems provide one way of modeling such control logic and decision rules. We describe a structure for an expert system that models patient appointment scheduling and the integration of such an expert system within a simulation model. An example expert system for a small animal veterinary clinic is presented.

Summary of Argument: Throughout this proceeding, EPA has identified no policy or normative criteria to justify its NAAQS standards, thus suggesting that science alone can be used to determine the appropriate air quality standard. Science plays a critical, indeed essential, role in evaluating the risks of possible air quality standards being considered for adoption by EPA. However, science by itself cannot provide the justification for selecting a particular air quality standard. Especially in setting standards for non-threshold pollutants, such as in this case, scientific evidence cannot alone indicate where the standard should be set, since any level above zero will …

The Effect Of Anisotrophy On The Potential Distribution In Biological Tissues And Its Impact On Nerve Excitation Simulations, Robert B. Szlavik, Hubert De Bruin Sep 2000

The Effect Of Anisotrophy On The Potential Distribution In Biological Tissues And Its Impact On Nerve Excitation Simulations, Robert B. Szlavik, Hubert De Bruin

Biomedical Engineering

Presents a finite difference solution of the potential distribution associated with electrical current stimulation in an anisotropic in-homogeneous tissue environment and compare it to the isotropic case. The results demonstrate that there can be significant errors associated with the assumption of isotropic tissue properties in calculating the potential distribution along an axon in nerve excitation simulations. These errors can have a significant impact on predicted nerve fiber recruitment patterns when evaluating the efficacy of specific surface or intramuscular stimulus electrode configurations. The results of this study also suggest when a more comprehensive tissue model should be implemented in an electrode …

A Multilevel Model Of Client Participation In Intensive Family Preservation Services, Julia H. Littell, E. A. Tajima Sep 2000

A Multilevel Model Of Client Participation In Intensive Family Preservation Services, Julia H. Littell, E. A. Tajima

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

We identify two distinct components of parent participation in intensive family preservation services: collaboration in treatment planning and compliance with program expectations. Using hierarchical linear models, we explore influences on collaboration and compliance at the case, worker, and program levels. Effects of cross-level interactions are also examined. Parental substance abuse, mental health problems, minority status, and lack of extended family support predict lower levels of participation. Workers' perceptions of their clients and of their own working conditions appear to influence client participation. Program factors matter as well, although some operate in tandem with case characteristics and worker perceptions.

Collaborating On Web-Based Instruction In Higher Education: Benefifits And Risks, Barbara Y. Lacost, Jody Isernhagen, Larry L. Dlugosh

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

The United States spends $600 billion on education of all types each year, making it the second largest industry after health care. Dunn (2000) estimates that the typical citizen will need the equivalent of 30 semester credits of coursework every 10 years to stay current with coming changes in their fields and lives. Innovative ways of providing such access to education, an absolute imperative in the merging global knowledge society, are required. Distance education provides access through multiple technologies and oftentimes includes some on-site instruction (Dunn, 2000; LaCost, 1998). Networked education (in higher education often referred to as a virtual …

The Heterogeneity Of Rights, Michael C. Dorf Sep 2000

The Heterogeneity Of Rights, Michael C. Dorf

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

What is the implication for the validity of governmental rules of the conclusion that the rule interferes with a constitutional right? This question has implications for two important doctrinal puzzles. The first is the question when, if ever, a litigant has a constitutional right to an exemption from a generally valid rule of law. Many constitutional rights are rule-dependent in the sense that they protect actors against certain kinds of governmental rules rather than shielding acts against governmental interference. This Article denies the claim by scholars and judges that this rule-dependence reflects a deep truth about the nature of constitutional …
