Taking Public Rights Private: The Rhetoric And Reality Of Social Security Privatization, Patricia E. Dilley
UF Law Faculty Publications
This Article explores the foundations of the Social Security privatization debate. What is frequently portrayed as a numbers problem to which a "correct" answer can be found is in fact an ideological and political argument about wealth building versus direct income support and about the reality and security of public entitlement as opposed to private property rights. Efforts to use the idea of private property as the basis of rights in the context of the Social Security system and other non-retirement social welfare programs have proven problematic. This Article suggests that Social Security, far from being a quaint, retrograde souvenir …

OBJECTIVE: Although asthma in children constitutes a major health problem, there is a dearth of literature on different aspects of asthma in rapidly developing countries. This cross-sectional research aims to study the socioclinical profile of asthmatic children and the impact of asthma symptoms on their life style. METHODS: The sample of this study, drawn from pediatric clinics of a general hospital and primary health care centers during a period of six months, comprised of children under 13 years of age who met the operational diagnostic criteria for asthma. The data collected from multiple sources on a semistructured questionnaire was analyzed …

An Outbreak Of Leptospirosis In A Swine Breeding Herd : It's Diagnosis, Treatment And Economic Effect, Duangjai Suwanchareon, Annop Kunavongkrit
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
An outbreak of leptospirosis in a 2600 sow breeding herd, in which 5% of the sows aborted, was investigated. Serum samples from 11 aborted sows were examined for leptospira antibodies. Using a Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT), containing only 12 serovars, no leptospira serovars were detected. However, after using a Microcapsule Agglutination Test (MCAT) kit, a further MAT using the additional three serovars (sejroe, hardjo and bratislava) revealed that the cause of abortion was Leptospira interrogan serovars bratislava and sejroe. After the final diagnosis, the animals were treated by using 800 ppm chlortetracycline in the feed for two weeks, followed by …

Serum Cholinesterase Levels In Elephants, Piyarat Subhachalat, Wara Panichkriangkrai, Sittidet Mahasawangkul, Taweepok Angkawanich, Sirintorn Yibchok-A-Nun
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Serum cholinesterase (ChE) levels were determined in adult elephants in the summer, the rainy season and in the winter by a colorimetric method using acetylthiocholine as the substrate. The results showed that ChE levels in adult males were lower than those in adult females, in all three seasons (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the ChE level was at it’s highest in the rainy season, falling lower inมthe summer and lower again in the winter season. The difference was found in both sexes. This study is the first report on the measurement of ChE levels in elephants.

Intestinal Lesions Caused By A Strain Of Chlamydia Suis In Weanling Pigs Infected At 21 Days Of Age, Douglas G. Rogers, Arthur A. Andersen
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
The objective of this study was to determine whether a strain of Chlamydia suis shown previously to be an intestinal pathogen in gnotobiotic piglets could cause diarrhea and intestinal lesions in young weanling pigs. Pigs from 2 sows were randomly assigned to 2 groups. Group 1 included 13 pigs that were weaned at 24 hours of age and then housed in isolator units and fed milk replacer and unmedicated starter ration. Group 2 included 8 pigs that nursed their respective sows, consumed unmedicated starter ration, and were weaned at 21 days of age. Ten pigs in group 1 and 6 …

Contingencies Governing The Production Of Fricatives, Affricates, And Liquids In Babbling, Christina E. Gildersleeve-Neumann, Barbara L. Davis, Peter F. Macneilage
Speech and Hearing Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Studies of early-developing consonants (stops, nasals, and glides) in babbling have shown that most of the variance in consonants and their associated vowels, both within and between syllables, is due to a "frame" produced by mandibular oscillation, with very little active contribution from intrasyllabic or intersyllabic tongue movements. In a study of four babbling infants, the prediction that this apparently basic "frame dominance" would also apply to late-developing consonants (fricatives, affricates, and liquids) was tested. With minor exceptions, confirming evidence for both the predicted intrasyllabic and intersyllabic patterns was obtained. Results provide further evidence for the frame dominance conception, but …
