Giant Cell Fibroma Of The Oral Cavity. Ii. An Immunohistochemical Study, Somporn Swasdison, Kittipong Dhanuthai

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenotype of the mononuclear and the multinucleated cells in the oral giant cell fibroma. Materials and methods The study was performed in thirty-one cases of the oral giant cell fibroma. The surgical specimens of the lesions were stained with a panel of antibodies using indirect immunoperoxidase technique. Results The mononuclear and multinucleated giant cells of the giant cell fibroma showed positive staining by antibodies against vimentin and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) while demonstrating negative staining by antibodies against S-100 antigen, leukocyte common antigen (LCA), macrophage marker (LNS), smooth muscle …

Carotid Cavernous Sinus Fistula: A Literature Review, Poramate Pitak-Arnnop

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Carotid cavernous sinus fistula is an uncommon complication of craniocervical trauma which is usually associated with a skull base, frontal or midface fractures; besides it may also be a spontaneous phenomenon of a congenital, degenerative or iatrogenic origin. The blood shunts from either internal or external carotid arteries to the cavernous sinus resulting the blurred vision, ophthalmoparesis, pulsating exophthalmos, glaucoma, ocular ischemic syndrome, orbital headache and periorbital pain. The diagnosis is made by clinical features and radiography for differentiating from superior orbital fissure syndrome, orbital apex syndrome, retrobulbar hematoma and cavernous sinus thrombosis. In unspontaneous closure cases with progressive findings, …

The Frat Volume 97 Number 04 July, August & September 2000, The National Fraternal Society Of The Deaf (Nfsd)

1991-2000

The Frat was the official member publication of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf (NFSD). First established in 1902, the publication ran for just over a century, until its closure in 2006.---NFSD was an insurance business established in 1901. Its purposes were to provide insurance to mainly Deaf members, to serve as an advocate for the Deaf, and to provide community service and recreational opportunities through divisional activities. The existing insurance coverage was transferred to the Catholic Order of Foresters in 2005. The NFSD disbanded in 2007.---The Frat's main purpose was to keep members apprised of the activities of …

Ouabain Interaction With Cardiac Na+/K+-Atpase Initiates Signal Cascades Independent Of Changes In Intracellular Na+ And Ca2+, Jiang Liu, Jiang Tian, Michael Haas, Joseph I. Shapiro, Amir Askari, Zijian Xie Sep 2000

Ouabain Interaction With Cardiac Na+/K+-Atpase Initiates Signal Cascades Independent Of Changes In Intracellular Na+ And Ca2+, Jiang Liu, Jiang Tian, Michael Haas, Joseph I. Shapiro, Amir Askari, Zijian Xie

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

We have shown previously that partial inhibition of the cardiac myocyte Na+/K+-ATPase activates signal pathways that regulate myocyte growth and growth-related genes and that increases in intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are two essential second messengers within these pathways. The aim of this work was to explore the relation between [Ca2+]i and ROS. When myocytes were in a Ca2+-free medium, ouabain caused no change in [Ca2+]i, but it increased ROS as it did when the cells were in …

Should International Human Rights Law Trump Us Domestic Law?, Jack Goldsmith Sep 2000

Should International Human Rights Law Trump Us Domestic Law?, Jack Goldsmith

Chicago Journal of International Law

The human rights community has fiercely criticized the United States' failure to make international human rights treaties a source of law in the domestic realm. In this essay, I defend US practice against these criticisms. To focus the analysis, I simplify in two ways. First, I consider only the ICCPR, the most ambitious of the international human rights treaties. Second, I assume that the US practice of not incorporating the ICCPR into the domestic realm is legally valid under both international law and domestic constitutional law. I thus concentrate only on the policy question whether the US should apply the …

Exception Handling In Workflow Systems, Zongwei Luo, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof J. Kochut, John A. Miller Sep 2000

Exception Handling In Workflow Systems, Zongwei Luo, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof J. Kochut, John A. Miller

Kno.e.sis Publications

In this paper, defeasible workflow is proposed as a framework to support exception handling for workflow management. By using the “justified” ECA rules to capture more contexts in workflow modeling, defeasible workflow uses context dependent reasoning to enhance the exception handling capability of workflow management systems. In particular, this limits possible alternative exception handler candidates in dealing with exceptional situations. Furthermore, a case-based reasoning (CBR) mechanism with integrated human involvement is used to improve the exception handling capabilities. This involves collecting cases to capture experiences in handling exceptions, retrieving similar prior exception handling cases, and reusing the exception handling experiences …

Monitoring Cattle Behavior And Pasture Use With Gps And Gis, L. W. Turner, M. C. Udal, B. T. Larson, S. A. Shearer Sep 2000

Monitoring Cattle Behavior And Pasture Use With Gps And Gis, L. W. Turner, M. C. Udal, B. T. Larson, S. A. Shearer

Management and Monitoring of Farm Animals Collection

Precision agriculture is already being used commercially to improve variability management in row crop agriculture. In the same way, understanding how spatial and temporal variability of animal, forage, soil and landscape features affect grazing behavior and forage utilization provides potential to modify pasture management, improve efficiency of utilization, and maximize profits. Recent advances in global positioning system (GPS) technology have allowed the development of lightweight GPS collar receivers suitable for monitoring animal position at 5-min intervals. The GPS data can be imported into a geographic information system (GIS) to assess animal behavior characteristics and pasture utilization. This paper describes application …

Ground Water In Northwest Arkansas: Minimizing Nutrient Contamination From Non-Point Sources In Karst Terrane, R. K. Davis, J. V. Brahana, J. S. Johnston

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The purpose of the project is to evaluate the effectiveness of Best Management Practices (BPMs) in preventing non-point source contamination of the ground-water resources in the karst terrane of northwestern Arkansas. Limestone and dolomite aquifers in the region are highly vulnerable to contamination. Ground-water studies performed in the region during the last two decades indicate degradation of these carbonate aquifers by nutrients and bacteria. The expeditious growth of the poultry industry during this period, in combination with the inordinate population growth of the region constitute a threat to the ground-water resources from both point sources and non-point sources of contamination. …
