Pacific Islander Pastors And Missionaries: Some Historiographical And Analytical Issues, Doug Munro, Andrew Thornley Sep 2000

Pacific Islander Pastors And Missionaries: Some Historiographical And Analytical Issues, Doug Munro, Andrew Thornley

Pacific Studies

In global terms, the deployment of indigenous pastors and their equivalents in the dissemination of Christianity was unusual. A notable exception was in the Pacific Islands, where the widespread use of native teachers and preachers was a feature of the missionization process. Their role was not adequately reflected in the historiography of the region until the publication of Ron and Marjorie Crocombes’ seminal book The Works of Ta‘unga in 1968. The Crocombes inspired an outpouring of research on pastors and teachers, which this article describes, categorizes, and assesses. The article concludes with suggestions for further research.

Oasis Or Mirage: The Farming Of Black Pearl In The Northern Cook Islands, Cluny Macpherson

Pacific Studies

By the late twentieth century, small island states in the Pacific faced severe problems resulting from the ways in which they had become integrated into the world capitalist economy since the early nineteenth century. Generic environmental, economic, and social problems follow from dependence on the production of a relatively small number of crops for sale in the world economy, out-migration and remittances, and foreign aid. Most states have sought to reduce their dependence and to move toward greater degrees of economic self-sufficiency. In the case of atolls, opportunities for development are typically regarded as minimal because of fragile ecosystems and …

Factors Influencing General Practitioners In The Prescription Of Homeopathic Medicines, Russell Abratt, Julie Lanteigne Sep 2000

Factors Influencing General Practitioners In The Prescription Of Homeopathic Medicines, Russell Abratt, Julie Lanteigne

HCBE Faculty Articles

This study examines the factors influencing general practitioners' prescription behaviour. It differs from previous studies in that the subject is homeopathic medicines and not pharmaceutical drugs. The literature indicates very particular behaviour patterns of doctors prescription behaviour. The present study provides evidence which contradicts the previous studies. There is thus evidence that what applies to the prescription of ethical pharmaceutical drugs does not apply to the prescription of alternative homeopathic medicines. It follows that marketing practices for alternative medicines should differ from those used by pharmaceutical companies.

Helicobacter Pylori Serology And The Diagnosis Of H. Pylori Infection In Children, Yoram Elitsur, Rafah Aflak, Cheryl Neace, W. E. Triest

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Serological screening accuracy rate may be dependent on clinical and pathological determinants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of Hp serology test (Roche Biomedical Lab., Labcorp), In the diagnosis of Hp infection in 121 children who were seen in the Pediatric Gastoenterology Clinic at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine In Huntington. Positive serology detected children with Hpassociated gastritis with a sensitivity of 51.6%. Positive serology significantly correlated with the degree of gastric inflammation and density of Hp organisms in the gastric mucosa (ANOVA p < 0.001). The Labcorp. Hp-ELISA test had a poor accuracy rate for the detection of Hp-gastritis in children. Gastric biopsies should always be performed to establish the diagnosis of Hp infection in children.

Should We Take Global Governance Seriously?, John R. Bolton Sep 2000

Should We Take Global Governance Seriously?, John R. Bolton

Chicago Journal of International Law

My thesis, as a convinced Americanist, is that these happy days are over. Like it or not, the Globalists have seized more readily the opportunities provided by the end of the Cold War to advance their agenda, building on an iceberg-like mass produced by years of writing, conference-going, resolution-passing and networking. In substantive field after field-human rights, labor, health, the environment, political-military affairs, and international organizations-the Globalists have been advancing while the Americanists have slept. Recent clashes in and around the United States Senate indicate that the Americanist party has awakened, and that the harm and costs to the United …

Nebraska's Employment Growth Slows, John Austin, Nebraska Business Forest Council Sep 2000

Nebraska's Employment Growth Slows, John Austin, Nebraska Business Forest Council

Business in Nebraska

Despite the robust national economy, Nebraska's economy has started an employment growth slowdown.1 The slowdown is the result of tight labor markets across the state and the impact of a continuing decline in the agricultural sector.

The current situation is not unusual. Past studies indicate that, with the possible exception of durables manufacturing, Nebraska's business cycle has little relation to the national business cycle. In contrast, there is a strong tie between the state's overall economic cycle and its agricultural cycle. It is not a case of agriculture dominating the state's economy, but that losses in agriculture will take …
