Women's and Gender Studies Program: Information and Materials

Many exciting things have been happening in the Women's Studies Office since I arrived on the third floor of Avery HalL I feel a little dizzy, but also quite exhilarated, by all the activities and projects we have underway. My transition into this challenging job has been made much easier by Glenda Moore, our program Secretary, by the energy and imagination of Graduate Assistants, Tagi Adams and Yeaji Shin, and by a hard-working Advisory Committee: Mary Beck, Barbara DiBernard, Carole Levin, Christin Mamiya, Adelaida Martinez, and Bobbi Shamburg.

Doctoring Prescriptions: Federal Barriers To Combating Prescription Drug Fraud Against On-Line Pharmacies In Washington, Eric M. Peterson Oct 2000

Doctoring Prescriptions: Federal Barriers To Combating Prescription Drug Fraud Against On-Line Pharmacies In Washington, Eric M. Peterson

Washington Law Review

Prescription drug abuse represents a significant portion of drg abuse in the United States. Drug-seeking individuals alter, steal, or forge prescriptions to sustain their own dependence on prescription medications or to divert the drugs to sell to others at inflated rates. On-line pharmacies are a relatively new source for prescription medications and a potential target for prescription drug fraud. The federal government recently enacted the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (E-SIGN), which governs electronic signatures and preempts inconsistent provisions of state laws, such as the Washington Electronic Authentication Act (WEAA). WEAA is a legal framework that could …

Analysis Of 200 Food Items For Benzo[A]Pyrene And Estimation Of Its Intake Ίη An Epidemiologic Study, Ν. Kazerouni, R. Sinha, Che-Han Hsu, Α. Greenberg, Ν. Rothman

United States Public Health Resources

Animal stιιdies have shown that dietary intake of benzo[α]pyrene (BaP), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (ΡΑΗ), causes increased levels of tumors at several sites, particιιlarly ίη the upper gastrointestinal tract. However, the role of dietary intake of BaP and cancer ίη humans is not clear. We CIeated a BaP database of selected food products that could be lίnl(ed to Food Frequency Qnestionnaires (FFQs) to estimate BaP intake. BaP levels were measnred for each food line-item (composite samples) which consisted of a variety of foods ίη a FFQ. Composite sample parts were derived from the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey …

Prevalence Of Non-O157:H7 Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia Coli In Diarrheal Stool Samples From Nebraska, Paul Fey, R. S. Wickert, M.E. Rupp, T. J. Safranek, S. H. Hinrichs Oct 2000

Prevalence Of Non-O157:H7 Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia Coli In Diarrheal Stool Samples From Nebraska, Paul Fey, R. S. Wickert, M.E. Rupp, T. J. Safranek, S. H. Hinrichs

United States Public Health Resources

We determined the prevalence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in diarrheal stool samples from Nebraska by three methods: cefixime-tellurite sorbitol MacConkey (CT-SMAC) culture, enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) enzyme immunoassay, and stx1,2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Fourteen (4.2%) of 335 specimens were positive by at least one method (CT-SMAC culture [6 of 14], EHEC enzyme immunoassay [13 of 14], stx1,2 PCR [14 of 14]). Six contained serogroup 0157, while non-0157 were as prevalent as 0157 serogroups.

Endocrine Cell Dysplasia (Nesidioblastosis): A Relatively Unrecognized Entity In Pakistan?, Nasim Sabir, Irshad Nabi Soomro, Zafar Nazir, Abdul Jabbar, Sheema Hasan

Section of Paediatric Surgery

Nesidioblastosis is quantitative as well as qualitative abnormality of pancreatic endocrine cells. There is scattering of small endocrine cell clusters arranged haphazardly rather than the peripheral location within the lobule1,2. Islet contours are irregular, tailing off into parenchyma3. These islets are present in intimate association with ducts forming ductuloinsular complexes1 We recently encountered a new born baby with signs and symptoms of endocrine cell dysplasia.

Late-Talking Toddlers: Mlu And Ipsyn Outcomes At 3;0 And 4;0, Leslie Rescorla, Katherine Dahlsgaard, Julie Roberts

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Expressive language outcomes measured by MLU and the Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn) at ages 3;0 and 4;0 were investigated in 34 late talkers with normal receptive language identified between 2;0 to 2;7 and 16 typically developing comparison children matched on age, SES, and nonverbal ability. Late talkers made greater gains than comparison children between 3;0 and 4;0 in both MLU and IPSyn raw score. However, when age-standardized x-scores were analysed, the late talkers were about 2.5 Standard deviations below comparison children on both measures at both ages. At 3;0, 41 % of the late talkers had MLUs above the …

The History And Politics Of Second Amendment Scholarship: A Primer, Carl T. Bogus Oct 2000

The History And Politics Of Second Amendment Scholarship: A Primer, Carl T. Bogus

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The introductory Article to this Symposium reviews the history and politics of Second Amendment scholarship, beginning in 1960, when the first article endorsing the individual right model was published, challenging what had previously been the accepted view that the Second Amendment grants only a collective right to keep and bear arms within the government-organized militia. Bogus describes how gun rights organizations embarked on a bootstrap campaign to develop a large body of writing supporting the individual right model, much of it by lawyers directly employed by or representing gun rights organizations, and then argued that the sheer mass of this …

Rice V. Paladin Enterprises: Why Hit Man Is Beyond The Pale, Beth A. Fagan Oct 2000

Rice V. Paladin Enterprises: Why Hit Man Is Beyond The Pale, Beth A. Fagan

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Comment examines the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals decision in Rice v. Paladin Enterprises, Inc., which held that the publisher of a criminal instruction manual could be held liable for civil aiding and abetting without running afoul of the First Amendment. Fagan analyzes the traditional rationales for protecting free speech to determine the appropriate level of protection for criminal instruction manuals and focuses on Hit Man: A Technical Manual for Independent Contractors, the book that facilitated the murders at issue in Rice. She assesses the First Amendment value of Hit Man and balances that value against …

Health Care Law: Breaking Down The Boundaries Of Malpractice Law, Philip G. Peters Jr. Oct 2000

Health Care Law: Breaking Down The Boundaries Of Malpractice Law, Philip G. Peters Jr.

Faculty Publications

Historically, courts have treated professional malpractice cases as unique. When disputes that would otherwise have been governed by tort rules of general application have arisen in the context of medical treatment, courts have routinely constructed special rules for the resolution of those disputes. Recent evidence suggests that this penchant for special rules may be weakening and that malpractice law may be slowly melting back into the sea of tort doctrine. The three Missouri health care law cases noted in this issue are the latest evidence that courts today are more willing to resolve medical negligence actions using tort rules of general …
