A Review Essay: Limits Of Gaylaw, Dale Carpenter Jan 2000

A Review Essay: Limits Of Gaylaw, Dale Carpenter

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Part of Professor William Eskridge's mission in Gaylaw (Gaylaw: Challenging the Apartheid of the Closet by William N. Eskridge, Jr., Harvard University Press, 1999) is to describe the historical development of the complex legal and, to some extent the cultural, landscape for gays. (pp. 17-137) Though not much of Eskridge's presentation of the history of American law's treatment of gays draws from original research, its synthesis of the available secondary sources is a useful contribution and will likely become a staple of classes treating the subject.

The larger part of Gaylaw is the book's greatest challenge and the place where …

Urine Trouble! Extending Constitutionality To Mandatory Suspicionless Drug Testing Of Students In Extracurricular Activities, James M. Mccray Jan 2000

Urine Trouble! Extending Constitutionality To Mandatory Suspicionless Drug Testing Of Students In Extracurricular Activities, James M. Mccray

Vanderbilt Law Review

The United States makes clear its reverence for education by demanding that its children attend school.' What is less clear, how- ever, is the nation's dedication to each student's constitutional rights. From the earliest days of the common law, public school students have lacked fundamental rights, even the right of liberty in its narrowest sense.' Although public students retain certain constitutional rights,' the public school system maintains an elevated power over its students." This power is like that of a parent,' including the duty to "inculcate the habits and manners of civility" into its students.' The public school's control over …

How The Grateful Dead Turned Alternative Business And Legal Strategies Into A Great American Success Story, Brian C. Drobnik Jan 2000

How The Grateful Dead Turned Alternative Business And Legal Strategies Into A Great American Success Story, Brian C. Drobnik

Vanderbilt Law Review

That the Grateful Dead were "different" undoubtedly is true on a broad social level. But it is not so easy to ascertain how they were different in the business and legal aspects of their enterprise. The ephemeral nature of their approach stems from the fact that they conducted their affairs within and alongside the world of statutes and contracts and yet provided themselves with a great degree of independence from that world. This Note will comment on the Dead's perspective on and their ultimate rejection of many of the business and legal strategies traditionally ascribed to in the industry. After …

Charitable Contributions And The Personal Income Tax: Evaluating The Canadian Credit, David G. Duff Jan 2000

Charitable Contributions And The Personal Income Tax: Evaluating The Canadian Credit, David G. Duff

All Faculty Publications

The last fifteen years have witnessed significant changes in the way that charitable contributions by individuals are treated under the Canadian Income Tax Act. The most significant of these changes involves the conversion in 1988 of what had previously been a deduction for charitable contributions whereby the value of the tax benefit depends on the donor?s level of income, into a tax credit under which the value of this benefit depends on the total amount of charitable contributions claimed in the particular taxation year. As a result of this amendment, Canada has become the only developed country that recognizes charitable …

Non-Enzymatic Glycosylation (Or Glycation) And Inhibition Of The Pig Heart Cytosolic Aspartate Aminotransferase By Glyceraldehyde 3-Phosphate, Catherine Fitzgerald, Timothy Swearengin, George Yeargans, David Mcwhorter, Brad Cucchetti, Norbert W. Seidler

Faculty and Staff Publications

Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (Glyc3P), a glycolytic intermediate, non-enzymatically glycosylated (or glycated) and inhibited the pig heart cytoplasmic aspartate aminotransferase (cAAT). Glyc3P (5.0 mM) decreased cAAT activity by 47% after 1 min at 23 degrees C. cAAT activity remained unchanged after a 24h incubation with either glucose 6-phosphate (5.0 mM) or ribose 5-phosphate (5.0 mM). Increasing the incubation pH from 6.4 to 7.8 or the incubation temperature from 23 degrees C to 50 degrees C enhanced Glyc3P's inhibitory effect on cAAT activity. Glyc3P (250-500 microM) decreased the thermal stability of cAAT as evidenced by lowering the Tm or temperature that caused a …

Production Of Urban Space In Kenya: Central-Local Government Power Relations In Mediating Space In Athi River Town., Francis Tama Koti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Centrally controlled political and economic systems are popular among Third World countries. They however, become problematic particularly in rapidly growing urban areas where different forces compete for scarce resources, hence calling for an understanding of the nature of the relationships between the different forces that produce the urban environment. In Kenya, the basic assumption is that urban space is mediated by the local state. The author uses Athi River town, as a case study, through which survey questionnaires and informal interviews are conducted with key personnel of Mavoko Municipal Council on one hand, and central government ministries operating within the …

Dimensional Changes Of Polysulfide Impression Materials Over Time., Saeid Zeiaei-Nafchi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of time on dimensional changes of polysulfide impression materials over time. A stainless steel die fabricated according to the ADA, Standards Specification No.19 was used. Measurements were carried out at 15 minutes intervals up to 3 hours and at 6, 12, and 24 hours. Results, the mean, and the percentage dimensional changes were reported. All collected data was based on a repeated measure design. Split plot analysis of variance at P< 0.05 was used to calculate any statistically significant dimensional changes over time among the three impression materials. All three impression materials tested could produce replicas with clinically acceptable dimensional changes up to 24 hours after making the impression. However, after 3 hours, there were significantly greater dimensional changes approaching our standard of 40 µm acceptability. It is therefore recommended that polysulfide impression materials be poured within 3 hours of making the impression.
