An Economic Analysis Of The Relationship Of Poverty And Income Inequality In Rural West Virginia., Semoa Costa Batista De Sousa
An Economic Analysis Of The Relationship Of Poverty And Income Inequality In Rural West Virginia., Semoa Costa Batista De Sousa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There have been numerous research studies on poverty, income inequality, economic growth, and the relationship between these variables at national and regional levels. This thesis focuses on poverty and income inequality, in 38 rural counties of West Virginia. The study examines the possibility of simultaneity between poverty and income inequality (Gini index) using a two-stage least square regression with cross-sectional data for 1980 and 1990. Furthermore, ordinary least square regressions are used to investigate the main determinants of poverty and income inequality. The results confirm the possibility of simultaneity between poverty and income inequality. The proportions of the population in …
The Role Of Lois Marie Gibbs In The Love Canal Crisis And Its Effect On Federal "Superfund" Legislation, 1973-1981., Daniel Victor Kahler
The Role Of Lois Marie Gibbs In The Love Canal Crisis And Its Effect On Federal "Superfund" Legislation, 1973-1981., Daniel Victor Kahler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the spring of 1978, a young homemaker named Lois Marie Gibbs discovered that her child was attending an elementary school built on top of a 20,000 ton, toxic chemical dump in Niagara Falls, New York. Out of desperation, she organized her neighbors into the Love Canal Homeowners Association and struggled more than two years for relocation. Opposing the group’s efforts were the chemical manufacturer, Hooker Chemical Corporation, and local, state, and federal government officials who insisted that the leaking toxic chemicals, including dioxin the most toxic chemical known to man, was not the cause of high rates of birth …

Use Of Track-Etched Polycarbonate Filters In Series To Mimic The Total Human Lung Deposition In The Ultrafine And Fine Particle Range From 0.03 To 0.40 Microns., Jennifer Lynn Hornsby-Myers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Three 3.0m polycarbonate track-etched filters were used in series in a 37 mm cassette and tested at 2.2 L/min using an automated filter tester to determine the filter assembly’s deposition curve as a function of particle size from 0.03 to 0.4 m. The filter assembly’s efficiency curve was compared to Stahlhofen’s resting with nose breathing and working with mouth breathing human total lung deposition curves used by the ICRP. Bias maps show that the shape of the filter assembly’s deposition curve matches the two lung deposition curves in the ultrafine range under these specific test conditions. The efficiency curve of …

"The Whole Bible Painted In Our Houses": Visual Narrative And Religious Polemic In Early Lutheran Art, Samuel Torvend
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
In his discussion of the psychodynamics of orality, the Jesuit linguist and philosopher Walter Ong writes that ''the interiorizing force of the oral word relates in a special way to the sacral, to the ultimate concerns of existence. In most religions the spoken word functions integrally in ceremonial and devotional life ... In Christianity, for example, the Bible is read aloud at liturgical services. For God is thought of always as 'speaking' to human beings, not writing to them ... [Indeed] the Hebrew word dabar, which means word, means also event and thus refers directly to the spoken word …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation explores the trends in hiring part-time faculty in West Virginia colleges and universities. The restructuring paradigm places the utilization of part-time faculty within the context of changes in the culture of higher education. Questionnaires were sent to 163 administrators of West Virginia public and private 4-year institutions. Complete responses were received from 134 presidents, vice-presidents for academic affairs, provosts, deans, and in select circumstances, division chairs. There were no significant relationships between the administrator's attitude toward part-time faculty and the administrator's position, years in administration, or years teaching. Attitude toward part-time faculty as measured by the Part-time Faculty …

Labor Law And Industrial Peace: A Comparative Analysis Of The United States, The United Kingdom, Germany, And Japan Under The Bargaining Model, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt
Articles by Maurer Faculty
In this Article, Professor Dau-Schmidt provides a comparative analysis of the labor laws of the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan for the purposes of identifying which characteristics of a country's labor laws are likely to reduce strike incidence and intensity and promote industrial peace. To identify which characteristics of a country's law are likely to encourage industrial peace, Professor Dau-Schmidt presents game theory arguments based on his analysis of unions and collective bargaining. Dau-Schmidt then provides a simple empirical test as to the relative success of different countries' laws in advancing industrial peace by comparing data on …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Childhood Sexual Abuse, Dissociation, And Eating Disorders., Patricia Marie Bailey
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Childhood Sexual Abuse, Dissociation, And Eating Disorders., Patricia Marie Bailey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Researchers have documented a high percentage of eating disordered individuals with a history of traumatic experiences such as childhood sexual abuse (Abramson & Lucido, 1991; Oppenheimer, Howells, Palmer, & Chaloner, 1985; Tice, Hall, Beresford, Quinones, & Hall, 1989). To what extent these adverse life events may contribute to the onset, maintenance, and severity of maladaptive eating behaviors is widely debated among researchers and clinicians. The present study attempted to identify a spectrum of potentially traumatic life experiences in eating disordered individuals and their relationship with dissociation and eating pathology. Thirty-four female subjects meeting DSM-IV criteria for Bulimia Nervosa (n = …
Reconsidering The Americans With Disabilities Act, Miranda Mcgowan
Reconsidering The Americans With Disabilities Act, Miranda Mcgowan
Georgia Law Review
The Supreme Court's Americans with Disabilities Act decisions in Sutton v. United Air Lines and its companion cases have been extensively criticized as inconsistent with the ADA's purpose and legislative history. In Sutton, the Court held that corrective measures used by an individual to alleviate the effects of a physical or mental impairment should be taken into account when assessing whether a person has a disability under the ADA. The Court's ruling rejected the EEOC's interpretive guidance and the approach taken by a majority of circuit courts. As a practical matter, Sutton significantly curtails the class of persons deemed to …
Role Of Jaffee V. Redmonds "Course Of Diagnosis Or Treatment" Condition In Preventing Abuse Of The Psychotherapist-Patient Privilege, Lynda W. Kenney
Role Of Jaffee V. Redmonds "Course Of Diagnosis Or Treatment" Condition In Preventing Abuse Of The Psychotherapist-Patient Privilege, Lynda W. Kenney
Georgia Law Review
The Supreme Court recognized the federal psychotherapist- patient privilege in Jaffee v. Redmond and conditioned its application on the existence of a "course of diagnosis or treatment" within which a psychotherapist and patient exchanged confidential communications. The Court expressly precluded trial courts from conditioning privilege application on the favorable balance of a given patient's need for privacy over the extent of evidentiary harm likely to be caused by applying the privilege. Doubting the sufficiency of Jaffee's "course of diagnosis or treatment"condition to prevent abusive application of the privilege, the First Circuit Court of Appeals recognized the crime-fraud exception to the privilege …

An Examination Of The Multiple Domain Predictor Profiles Of Successful Exercise Behavior In A Health Resort Population., Cheryl Lynn Goldman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The present study examined the multiple domain predictor profiles of successful exercise behavior in a health resort population. Successful exercise behavior is operationally defined as maintaining, or changing from a sedentary or somewhat sedentary lifestyle to, an engagement in physical activity at least three times a week for at least twenty minutes each bout (ACSM, 1983). Demographic information, physiological variables, health status and risk factors were assessed at baseline from a sample of repeat guests from a southwestern health and fitness resort. A number of independent variables from each of the three domains were assessed for their ability to predict …

Skeletal Muscle Injury, Fibrosis And Transforming Growth Factor-Beta., Cheryl A. Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Several animal models were assessed for their ability to produce pathology with a potential for developing fibrosis. Pathology was determined using standard histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. In a model of ethanol-induced myopathy, cytochrome p450 1A1/2 was induced in endothelial cells (i.e. capillaries) but there was insufficient pathology to produce fibrosis. Two models of overload, tenotomy of the gastrocnemius muscle and a tetanus toxin overload model showed morphological changes including: degenerating fibers, central nuclei, variable myofiber sizes, and an expansion of the extracellular matrix, but changes were non-uniformly distributed making this a poor fibrosis model. A tetanus-toxin model of repetitive strain …

I. Chirality Transfer In The Allenic [2+2+1] Cycloaddition Reaction. Ii. An Approach Towards The Synthesis Of Antitumor Agent, (+/-)-Suberosenone, Using An Allenic [2+2+1] Cycloaddition Reaction., Angela Dawn Kerekes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The replacement of the alkene moiety with an allene functionality in the intramolecular Pauson-Khand (P-K) cycloaddition provides a novel route to either α-alkylidene or 4-alkylidene cyclopentenones, depending on the substrate and reaction conditions. 1,3-Disubstituted allenes in the presence of molybdenum hexacarbonyl, DMSO, and toluene at 110°C give α-alkylidene cyclopentenones as a mixture of E and Z stereoisomers. The ratio of E and Z isomers is also dependent upon the substrate and the reaction conditions. 1,3-Disubstituted allenes are very useful precursors for the synthesis of complex chiral compounds with the allene serving as the stereocontrolling group. We have developed a method …
