The Integration Of Facial And Auditory Affect: An Emotional Mcgurk Effect?, Teri Jean Forrest Jan 2000

The Integration Of Facial And Auditory Affect: An Emotional Mcgurk Effect?, Teri Jean Forrest

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Research investigating human emotion processing has typically studied either auditory (vocal) or visual (facial) information in isolation. However, speech perception literature supports integration of auditory and visual phonetic information by way of the McGurk effect. This study hypothesized an emotional McGurk effect (i.e., integration of auditory and visual emotional information). To evaluate this hypothesis, emotionally incongruent auditory-visual stimuli (e.g., a joyful voice with a sad face) were developed on a sample of 120 participants. These stimuli were then presented to 30 additional participants who categorized them according to one of eight common emotions. Results indicated significant (p < .001) Condition by Emotion interaction effects, suggesting that emotional information from auditory and visual sources is integrated during the perception of auditory emotion. This integration appears to occur in a predictable manner. To understand emotion perception, future studies will need to consider the interaction of auditory and visual emotional information.

The Effects Of Adhd Child And Parenting Groups, Tonya Yvonne Gardner-Hernandez Jan 2000

The Effects Of Adhd Child And Parenting Groups, Tonya Yvonne Gardner-Hernandez

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed childhood disorders in the United States. The symptomatic behaviors of ADHD often start as noncompliant behaviors, which can manifest themselves into increasingly inappropriate behaviors. If left untreated ADHD can become the catalyst for additional disruptive behavior disorders, as the child develops and begins to experience an increase in academic demands, family and peer rejection; This study used a one-group pretest-posttest design that was implemented in four separate ADHD parent and child groups. There were 16 child participants and 9 parent participants. Three of the five hypotheses were accepted. The children's …

This study consists of twenty respondents, ten male and ten female, taken from a larger study of 100 former foster care youth. The main areas addressed in this study include investigation into the youth's foster care experience, their level of preparation to transition to life on their own, and their post foster care adjustment. Outcomes indicative of poor adjustment in the community were …

Elevated Serum \Beta-Hcg Levels In Severepreeclampsia, Remzi̇ Gökdeni̇z, Erdal Arigüloğlu, Nursel Bazoğlu, Özcan Balat

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Most current hypotheses regarding the pathophysiologic mechanisms of pregnancy-induced hypertention point to early placental abnormalities. Therefore, we attempted to determine whether serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels reflect a different trophoblastic secretory response of preeclampsia. Thirteen pregnant women with severe preeclampsia were matched with twenty-one normotensive pregnant women with singleton pregnancies in the third trimester. Serum b-hCG levels were found to be significantly higher in severe preeclampsia, compared with controls (p

The Effect Of Halothane On The Enzymatic Activity Of Mouse Liver And Erythrocyte Glucose-6- Phosphate Dehydrogenase, Ergül Belge Kurutaş, Güneş T. Yüregi̇r, İlhan Tuncer Jan 2000

The Effect Of Halothane On The Enzymatic Activity Of Mouse Liver And Erythrocyte Glucose-6- Phosphate Dehydrogenase, Ergül Belge Kurutaş, Güneş T. Yüregi̇r, İlhan Tuncer

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The effects of repeated halothane anaesthesia on 6-10 week old male, Mus musculus albino mice weighing 29-32 g were studied. Halothane, a widely used anaesthetic, is known to be metabolised in the liver to toxic intermediates through cytochrome P4502E1 (CYP2E1). During the first week of repeated dosage, glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) activity decreased in both erythrocytes and liver cells, and during this time, livers increased significantly in weight and suffered histopathological damage, the damage increasing with the dosage of halothane, in the range 0.25-1.0 ml twice daily. When repeated anaesthesia was continued for a second week, G6PDH activity increased significantly …

Assessment Of Proliferative Activity In Soft Tissue Sarcomas Showing Pcna And Ki-67 Reactivity Immunohistochemically, Özlem Aydin, Canan Ersöz, Serdar Özbarlas, Gülşah Şeydaoğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of this study was to determine PCNA (Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen) and Ki-67 expression of various soft tissue sarcomas (STS) immunohisto-chemically and to correlate with the histologic grade of these tumors. Retrospectively 185 cases of STS were re-examined. Of the 185 cases, 35 primary STS cases which were localized in the extremities and trunk wall were included in this study. Anti-PCNA and Anti-Ki-67 monoclonal antibodies were applied to the paraffin sections of tumor tissues immunohistochemically. A semiquantitative score was employed to assess the percentage of cells that were positively stained. The comparison of the positively stained tumor cell …

A Comparative Analysis Of Surface Erosion And Water Runoff From Existing And Recontoured Forest Roads: O'Brien Creek Watershed, Lolo National Forest, Montana, Jennifer Hickenbottom

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In recent years more efforts have been made to return unneeded roads to natural states through obliteration or total recontouring methods. Yet, few data exist to support the road obliteration process. The purpose of this study was to assess some of the relative physical impacts of road obliteration for the O'Brien Creek (Montana) watershed. Three road treatments were chosen: recontoured road at 0 months, recontoured road at 12 months, and existing roads broken down into four segments ( cutslope, fillslope, road center and road tread). Two types of geologic formations were sampled (Bonner and Mount Shields) along with two slope …
